1kiki : So you're a red pill addict? Figures.

How many years has that line been my signature here ? Let's just say several. It's an obvious reference to the movie The Matrix. Red pill wakes you up, blue pill keeps you sleeping in la-la land, and remaining part of The Matrix.

YOu take the red pill ONCE. That hardly makes anyone and " addict " .

I said I'm a red pill guy, as I choose to see the world as it really is, while others prefer to keep taking that blue pill, and remain part of the battery club.

Some how, some way, 1kik takes my very simple, one line statement and COMPLETELY fabricates something which I did not say. How ? Who the hell knows. Maybe 1kiki is 'slow' or something. Doesn't matter.

Yes, kiki ,it DOES figure that I metaphorically take the 1 red pill. I said that my own damn self. Why you have to add a word and then repeat back to me what is my OWN signature, is somehting only you can know.

Let's keep it that way.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

And did you just do a rappy AGAIN? ... You offered no proof. No explanation. ... and then you proceeded to insult any further discussion on the matter.

So, once again - these are well established facts determined from many measurements made by many people over many years using many types of technologies that show that total ice amount is decreasing everywhere on the globe.

Rappy, how do you ignore these facts?

This is a philosophical point of view that only man can give meaning to something. It boasts an arrogance that places all importance on us and devalues everything else on this planet and beyond. It is a attitude that shows up in many of your posts. I have had many wonderful pets and encounters with wildlife that proves you wrong. I only hope that when we find other life out there, or especially if it finds us, they don't see themselves as the center of it all or we may be in trouble.

Well THUGR - you seem content to let rappy lead you in his waltz. Personally, I'm trying to enter into a genuine logical discussion about relevant facts. And I'll keep trying until either rappy responds directly to those facts with other facts and logic, or he gives up trying to distract from his deficiencies by posting irrelevancies.

But if you're happy to let him lead, well, I guess that's your thing. Isn't it?

Fortunately, I know how to use a computer. If rappy claims he wants to discuss global warming in the future - he'll be facing these exact same facts. Because, apparently, only nut jobs want to discuss facts.

Right, THUGR?

BTW - I take it your withdrawal is because you made the tactical mistake of letting rappy bait you into playing his game - your ego just couldn't take his flame-baiting. And, besides, you've never been one to focus on facts in any discussion. Between your need to play the expert and your inability to focus on facts, you were an eager target. Rappy was incidental. You did it to yourself.

You think you know that burning fossil fuel causes what economists call externalities — costs that private actions impose on others, but which people have no financial incentive to avoid. People of a certain turn of mind might want to declare that government intervention never helps; but who else can deal with such problems?

Well, one answer is denial — insistence that problems with fossil fuel, those hard to quantify externalities, aren’t real, that they’re invented by elitists who want to take away our freedom. The trouble is that such beliefs are fundamentally indefensible in the modern world. But here in Texas, we are in denial about reality. The rest of the world is not quite as bad because the rest of the world doesn't have as much oil and gas as Texas has.

And along with this anti-intellectualism goes a general dumbing-down, an exaltation of supposedly ordinary folks who don’t hold with this kind of stuff. Think of it as the right’s Duck Dynastic moment. The only thing that will change their minds is heavy weather falling down on their heads and killing 'em. So, pray for tornadoes, hurricanes and heatstroke to strike down your anti-intellectual enemies.

Well, unhappily for me I don't see prayer as a viable alternative.

Pretty much the rest of the globe thinks it's a problem and wants a solution - even 90%+ of the Chinese think their government isn't doing enough.

You have to wonder what specific processes and what confluence of vested interests caused such a large fraction of the US to be so pathological about reality - and survival.

Houstonians (Texans in other words) think they are some combination of Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, Howard Hughes, and the Apollo astronauts. Maybe there is too much natural gas leaking into the air from all the wells and it is affecting their brains. I can't speak for the rest of Americans and their self-delusions. Certainly not for AURapture.

Did you ever see The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus? I found it almost unwatchable because of the logical inconsistencies - and btw if Heath Ledger believed its message then I wonder how accidental his death was - but I thought it was to some extent a criticism of the movie industry, and how it preys on people's desire for a favored fantasy over reality. Or more generally, the corrosive effect of freely indulging in fantasy.

And there was a sagging aging Heath in the middle of it,

as a lesson in what he was in reality,
and not as a deliberately crafted A Knight's Tale fantasy reprise we would want him to be.

But anyway - kids just don't make up these fantasies out of nothing. They're taught them, and the fantasies are reinforced over time, until those notions become part of people's identity and their view of reality.

Who teaches them? Who reinforces it?

Sigh. If I had more time I would try to trace their historical evolution and the groups actively fostering, disseminating, and exploiting the memes. I think it would show us who's running the society to their benefit. It sure isn't us.

Never saw that movie.

Who do I think is running the world? It isn't a secret cabal making decisions behind our backs and manipulating us to follow. Our simplest technologies are running the world. What could be simpler than a fire burning fossil fuel? Even cavemen understood fire and stone arrowheads.

Then there is money, another simple technology that people easily grasp. In Texas, the idea of making money from oil has fired up imaginations for generations (see the movie Giant about a Texas oil tycoon).

The alternatives to fire are unfamiliar to the 21st century cavemen. Talk of climate change is too complicated for primitive men. It makes cavemen anxious. Cavemen think it is better, and certainly easier, not to think of it. The cavemen mock and slander scientists who do think about climate change so that the cavemen can feel superior and practical. And it is more practical to ignore climate change. Eventually that practicality may prove to be a huge mistake.

All is not well and I blame it on climate change: 15 cm of rain fell (that's 6 inches in Texan talk) in 15 minutes according to the neighbor's electronic weather station. Grandpa calls it a frog-strangler when the water pours down that fast. The noisy weather woke me at 2:00 AM and I never got back to sleep because I stepped on a wet carpet. There was rainwater dripping from around the A/C vent. Curse you, Exxon-Mobil and your CO2!

Be carful TWO, unplug everything that do not need to be plugged in. If you were flooded once then the ground can take no more and it will be quick to happen again. I am sure you know this but in times of stress we don't always think straight. I hope water is getting in just around the air unit. Stay safe..

I'm safe. High winds and a heavy downpour revealed the flaws in the ridge shingles of an old roof. It is not even my roof. The roof belongs to Shirley's estate. As executor I get to make the decisions about what to fix. Some of the decisions are life and death -- too grim for delicate me: today it was euthanizing Shirley's calico cat Rosie because of kidney and liver failure. Tomorrow will be deciding if I should find a different home for Suzy Q, Shirley's dog. The new owner, friend of Shirley who cared for the dog before Shirley died, didn't do right by Suzy Q during the storm. I shall blame global warming for these problems because I don't wanna take the blame.

Sorry for all the trouble you are experiencing. Do right by the dog, I'm sure that would be Shirley's wish. Wish I could help but I am nowhere near Texas. Vent about it when you need to. Sometimes bitching about something helps.

Halleluyah!!! Auraptor has seen the light. Wait, before we start looking for the sky to fall, why the sudden change?

Did you know that you are spouting the very words of the devil: to clarify, President Obama, who once said, "Let us rebuild our infrastructure. Feed the hungry and heal the sick through Obamacare. Help the poor!

Are you sure you're alright? Have you drank the Kool-Aid? Careful, Jongsy and JSF will kick you out of the Obama-haters Club.

Now THAT! made me smile.

Also, we have finite resources. And by that I mean the GOVERNMENT has finite resources. Wasting time and $ trying to promote a naturally occurring variation in planetary climate makes exactly zero sense.

Use that energy and $ to better the lives of humans living NOW. Help the poor. Repair and upgrade infrastructure. Stop flying idiots all across the globe in fuel guzzling planes, to stay in 5 star hotels and waste all manner of food, for meaningless conferences which amount to zilch in impacting either the climate or the lives of ANYONE.
