NAPA, Calif. — A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 hit the San Francisco Bay Area early Sunday morning, causing injuries and damage in Napa and knocking out power to thousands of people across the region.

The temblor struck about 10 miles northwest of American Canyon — six miles south of Napa — around 3:20 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey. It was the most powerful earthquake to hit the Bay Area since the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, which collapsed the Bay Bridge. At least four aftershocks were reported Sunday.

Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa treated more than 87 patients in its emergency room on Sunday morning, said a spokeswoman for the hospital, Vanessa DeGier. The injuries were largely limited to cuts and abrasions, Ms. DeGier said. Most patients were released after treatment, but some people were also admitted for more severe injuries — including a hip fracture and a heart attack. One patient, a child said to be in critical condition, was airlifted to a hospital in Santa Rosa.

Well, off the East coast, at least. Thankfully.

As for the east storms pick up enough force and they do turn into Hurricanes. Enough power and they just travel right on up the east coast to Canada and make mulch out of the little provinces there.

Umm... right.

A 6.1 quake isn't that forceful. Every quake I ever felt only lasted a
second or two. What was so strange about yesterday's Napa quake
is it lasted for 50 seconds!! I'm sure that's what accounts for the
bulk of the damage.

Reports I heard were that it was the strongest quake since the Northridge quake ?

I dunno, but the news folks were making it sound 'MASSIVE' in strength, and not so much pointing out the longevity .

And of course, they can't hardly ever talk about quakes in CA w/ out making some inane reference to " the BIG one " , which is due.

* ETA - Heard reports of, but not seen, of all the wine bottles which were busted as shelves and racks full of wine toppled over.

No joke. I bet there were many very expensive bottles that were lost. Terrible.

How do folks in that area not have racks chained or mounted to the walls, so they don't fall over ?

Can anybody blame Bush? or Global warming? Or the internet, so it's algores fault? Mebbe we can blame it on AIDS?

How about that Volcano in Iceland erupting underneath the ice? If it melts the ice it would produce more pollution and kill the planet faster than thousands of years of Icelandic vehicle emissions, right?

^ Asking who to blame is Trolling ... right?

OK. I don't recall how long the Loma Prieta quake lasted, but it was
considerably stronger than this one. Mainly, it was centered in a
densely urbanized area, very close to San Francisco. In comparison,
the Napa area is essentially rural. Mostly Ag.
