It seemed wasteful to send the unsellable cheese stockpile to a landfill, so why not make poor people eat the waste? It's like killing two birds with one stone! The Government Cheese was made from food surpluses stockpiled by the government as part of milk price supports for diary farmers. Once the dairy programs ended, Government Cheese was taken off the market. The Dairy Price Support Program ended December 31, 2007. That was followed by the Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) payments that ended on September 30, 2012. A block of government cheese was made from leftover bits of Colby, cheddar, cheese curd, or granular cheese mixed with emulsifiers. The taste and smell was a cross between very low-grade American cheese, a generic Velveeta knockoff, and a somewhat rancid cheddar. It was like biting into a cheese made from smelly socks. But the diary farmers needed someplace to dump their excess cheese. Why not dump it on the poor? Or dump on those who think American cheese is made of cheese? http://munchies.vice.com/articles/wtf-happened-to-government-cheese/

Same goes for the "cheese" and "meat" they throw on any frozen pizza that costs less than 6 bucks. This will never go away because just as much as they don't want to tell us where the ingredients come from, we really don't want to know either..... Ahhhhh... Ignorance is bliss. :)

It was just "recycling" until the discovery of the connection to Mad Cow Disease, then it became a business disaster. To hell with the "cycle of life" if no one will buy meat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creutzfeldt%E2%80%93Jakob_disease The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at www.mediafire.com/folder/1uwh75oa407q8/Firefly
