I don't think Turkey is necessarily comparable to Libya/Egypt/Syria.

It is a democracy and has strong ties to Europe, to the point where there was serious talk about it joining the EU. It's far from perfect and has a slightly spotty human rights record but nothing that requires an entire peaceful revolution to fix.

The comparison sort of distorts the conditions in Turkey.

I'm going to amend my previously stated opinion.

I still don't think that it's entirely comparable to the Arab Spring.

I do, however, think that these people have good reason to protest. And the way the government is handling the response, the asinine utterances of Erdogan with regard to the fact that these people are (peacefully) expressing some serious dissatisfaction... disgraceful.

Go, Turkish protesters!

This is a country that shares borders with Iran, Iraq and Syria - and is generally considered a solid ally of the West. Inner turmoil seems like it would be a significant development.

A friend is working a summer job in Ankara and says the police response is just insanely disproportionate and there have been other oppressive moves before that, such as using the terrorist attacks near the Syrian border as an excuse to ban public gatherings/concerts - conveniently prohibiting planned protests against Erdogan's foreign policy, which is considered war mongering by some. Seems like a serious test of Turkey's democratic system and values.

Thus it seems reasonably relevant in terms of world news. Not that local injustice elsewhere isn't also horrid, but perhaps less far-reaching.
