But considering that more children 14 and under die of accidental poisoning than from firearms accidents (94 vs. 62 in 2010, per the CDC's WISQARS database), it might not be fiction.

Seems most of the kids dying around these guns are dying from acute lead poisoning.

Same as it has been. More training for kids as to what to do when they find a gun. "Stop. Don't touch it. Leave the area. Call an adult.", comes to mind. You could have such training in schools on safety day. Maybe have a costumed character to re-enforce the lesson, like McGruff the Crime Dog or Woodsey Owl. Perhaps an eagle?

Also, more sure and severe punishment for folks who leave firearms where unsupervised kids get to them. Maybe if folks aren't concerned about the safety of the kids, they'll be concerned about a few years in jail.

Seems these simple steps would be more effective than, say, expanded background checks, or bans of the sale of "assault weapons" or large magazines, in reducing accidental shootings of children.
