In light of that other thread, with the religious school Bible vs science dinosaurs quiz, I saw this over on slate.com.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/05/02/science_and_religi
on_viral_pew_surveys_yield_surprising_results.html

Links to 2 surveys or tests, 1 about science and 1 about religion, one id 13 questions, the other is 15.

The columnist's point is that many of us know more about science than we do about religion.
Personally, I got 13 out of 13 on the science, 11 out of 15 on the religion. I had a lot more confidence in my science answers: I knew I had the correct answers to all 13.

A couple of criticisms, from my P O V: the science questions are a LOT more general than the religion ones. Some of the science questions are True/False. Some of the religion questions are pretty much detail questions, about people from religious history.

And a point the columnist makes: Science is on the formal curriculum at all levels of public schooling, so we've all been taught a bunch of that stuff.
Religion, on the other hand, is formally taught only in religious schools and churches. Many of us don't get formally instructed in it.

10 and 11 respectively.... Not bad, considering I know as little about either as I care to.

I got 13/13 on science (which only 7% of participants hit, kinda sad), but only 12/15 on religion (of the three I missed, one I kinda knew I was wrong when I gave my answer, one I really should have known better, and one I had no idea whatsoever).

Excuse me while I soak in all these sweet, sweet conservative tears.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

12 and 11--I knew I was guessing on two of the religion questions, and I guessed wrong. Fun; thanx. And I agree with your criticisms. I also might have scored even worse on the religion one if I hadn't been a "dunked Mormon" and wasn't now a Buddhist.

ETA: Good for YOU, Mark! We need well-educated teachers; now, if we could just do something about your education in ENGLISH... ;o) It's frustrating to know you're a teacher and see some of the spelling mistakes you make... (no offense; you're still cute as a button).

12 on Science, 14 on Religion.

I most struggled with the American-centered religious questions. First Great Awakening, what? It's very Bible-biased, though, which made it easy. Ask me any specifics on Buddhism, Islam or Hinduism the way they asked about Job and Moses and I'd be in more trouble.

Actually, my first license was in Language Arts - but yeah, I'll be the first to cop to my lousy spelling (though that's partially due to my less-than-accurate typing skills).

Science one I scored 10/13 right.

Religion one I scored 10/15 right. which isn't too bad for a none believer.

Normal is an ugly word 6Six

I'm not trying to argue, but by who's definition is normal an ugly word, Brenda?

The way I see it, you've got your Geniuses, Over-Achievers and less-competent Suck-Asses on one end......

And you've got your Geniuses, Under-Achievers and more-competent-than-they-ever-let-on non-contributors on the other end.

There's a reason why nobody ever has anything to say about the Normal people.

It's because they're, well.... Normal.... Average... Status Quo....

Nothing wrong with that, especially when you're on the right end of that equation. Outside of the RWED, and probably especially inside of it, nobody expects a thing from me. Nobody knows me. Nobody cares.

When you wake up that one fateful day and realize truly that you don't matter, just like anyone you know and/or love doesn't matter, it's a life changing experience.

Trying to deviate from that normalcy in any way leaves you prey to the idiots. That's no less true in the RWED than it is anywhere in life.
