He was both of those, and will be missed.

HERO

McGovern is Mayor McCheese's job in HamburgerLand.

George McGovern flew B-24s in WW2 and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross. I suspect that his war experiance is what made him so determined to end the Vietnam War a goal, like so many that we share, that I would have supported while disagreeing about the means to that end. While I'm sure he and I disagreed on many things, he was a patriot and by all accounts a good honost liberal. Despite the turmoil and divsion of his times he was the kind of liberal you could spend a lifetime arguing against and opposing yet still consider them a good and reliable friend. We miss liberals (and conservatives) with that quality to their character that allowed their differences and their discourse to be civil and respectful of the people and the process.

I truly regret that he was not elected in 1972 as this would have meant that Ronald Reagan would have been elected four years sooner. Then two terms of Bush before two terms of Clinton, followed by two more Bush, Obama's single term, then Romney and the disbanding of the Democratic Party and the institution of single party conservative rule from now until the end of time...

JONGSSTRAW

Before McGovern in 1972 there was an even more outspoken anti-war candidate in 1968 named Eugene McCarthy. He didn't get the nomination, losing to Hubert Humphrey. There was a campaign rally that Summer at the Green Acres Mall and I went with some friends. We were 15 then and couldn't even vote, but everyone in the huge crowd really went there to see Paul Newman. He was touring with McCarthy and he was something special to behold. Paul Newman, in his prime, speaking at the podium, his blue eyes sparkling at you, his voice quivering with emotion......girls screamed and women swooned. Even us guys couldn't help but be mesmorized by his incredible presence. A few of my friends turned gay right then and there. The rest of us ran to the movie theater to see a double-feature....Blow Up and I Am Curious Yellow. Those films straightened all of us out right away.
