Watch it if you haven't, it's mind-boggling:

So what do you think? Land or wreck? Only a few hours left to make a prediction... Landing time is 1:30 AM EST.

My take: On one hand, NASA crashed a Mars lander not too long ago (in the minds of middle aged people like me) because some moron forgot to covert units. (I've never made such a stupid mistake in my life! *cough*cough*) On the other hand, they must be feeling somewhat confident, to have put this movie out and upped the PR. All in all, I have to put my virtual money on success. I think they're going to pull it off.

Anyone else care to guess?

Let's call it cautious optimism.

There's an awful lot to go wrong with this kind of landing, but I'm hoping they pull it off. Or will have pulled it off, because they won't know until about 14 minutes after the fact, at best.

I admit, in the end that's all I have. I hope it makes it, so I'm rooting for that. The pictures from the other Rovers are just so damned good. I want more.

I cry BS about one thing on the 7 minute video: they say 0% margin of error. No way. They wouldn't have gone ahead if they didn't very well know the margins of errors. Mars has an atmosphere, and I've seen before that there is weather of a sort. What if there is high pressure and the air density is 5% above or below what they expect? Will the landing still work? What if there are winds? What if the orientation of the attitude adjustment engines are 0.5° off? What if the fuel burns 0.1% hotter than they planned in their "ideal case"? What if all those uncertainties make them come in 4° too high? Too low? Can they correct this?

Trust me, these calculations have been made, long ago, and provision and margins of error have been laid in. And yet, the real thing always has surprises.... I really hope the surprises are within acceptable bounds. And that everyone was clear about whether they are using feet or meters.

No, the error analysis for this mission is stunningly interesting to me. I can't imagine what the people who planned this are thinking and feeling right now. Imagine you're a mom who supported your girl's dream to do the balance beam, and now there she is, in the Olympics, about to do the mount in front of a worldwide audience, but she's down there on her own and you're in your seat in the crowd and can't say a thing she'll hear. She will succeed or fail, all on her own.

Yes, I've been watching too much Olympics.

Yes, I've been watching too much Olympics.

And to top it off, it all has to be done on the fly by the craft itself. It needs some sort of autonomous control system to account for those errors on the fly, because in this case, the "mom" or "coach" isn't just in the stands - the stands are 15 minutes away, so any coaching is going to come well after the performance is already over.

By all indications, it worked beautifully, though. I'm stunned and overjoyed by this news.

Where have you been getting all of this, Mike? They rock!

However, I'm waiting for the first color pictures from Curiosity, and results from all that lab equipment. Years of good stuff is looking to come of this. I haven't looked into the plans in detail, but I wonder if there is a path planned to get out of the crater. Wouldn't it suck if, after all this, they stuck it in a valley where it will just circle and circle? (OK, given the landing they just pulled off, I doubt NASA did something so silly.)

"... results from all that lab equipment ..."

FWIW I know one of the people who worked on the impedance probe at JPL to determine how much subsurface water there is on Mars, and what state it's in. I also know another person who does JPL financial support work. I feel lucky to be even indirectly associated with the effort through them, and am still SO pleased. MOST AWESOME.

ETA: Many years in the past I'd been in contact with JPL people who were designing a self-directing independent rover and running it along the streets of Pasadena. But my interest was very limited to their 'odor' (volatile chemical sensing) detectors as well as their deconvolution routine to determine the geographic source(s). That whole thing about designing a program to map the environment, to develop an independent search routine and to seek a source location - whole 'nother ball game.

Water, I believe. They aimed it for that crater because they've detected water there, if I'm not mistaken.

And the rover is eventually supposed to climb a peak known as Mt. Sharp, seen here:

Is that ice at the top? Curiosity aims to find out!

If Mars already didn't have the reputation of being a junkyard for probes and this were "just" another typical landing, on another world, it'd be a stunning achievement.

But because Mars has earned that rep, and because this landing was so more complicated than any other, I was thinking our guys ( and gals ) @ NASA had tried to go a bridge too far w/ this one.

I had to watch the replay, via my xBox app, as well as following via twitter, and still, it was ... there are no words.

And yeah. I got a little teary eyed at the scene from the control room... well done, NASA. Bravo.

Hey Kwick,

I hate to say it, but that Dawkins guy is kind of a dick. Is this really a quote of his? It can't be real... It has to be somebody completely misquoting him and making a joke. If it isn't a quote of his, please disregard the rest of this post in reply of the pic.

First, talking about "halves" he's delusional. If you add up every person in the world who is an athiest vs. every person in the world who believes in one form of religion or another, there is no "half" about it. I don't even need to do the research on that. Even you can concede that you don't believe that 50 percent of the world population is atheistic.

Second, the comment "the half that believes the world is 6,000 years old" is completely asenine. I grew up Catholic and, though I was never confirmed Catholic, I never once heard anyone in my family or at church even mention this. My first time ever hearing this was on the internet well after I was 20 years old.

Third, I believe the "6,000 years old" theory is something that is exclusive to certain types of Christians and not any other religion. According to Dawkins' quote here, that means that half of the people in the world are that crazy form of Christian and the other half are athiest. I guess Dawkins just wiped out Jews, Catholics (and many other Christian Religions), Muslims, Voodoo practitioners, Wicans, Satanists and hundreds of other religions in one paragraph.

What a powerful man. Adolph Hitler is smiling in his grave now for the first one, and I can think of several rabid Christian looneys that are loving the rest of the aftermath of that powerful quote.

Are you saying there's no way half (or more) of the voters in America will vote for Romney?

If you don't believe the fundamentalist claptrap, good for you. Maybe you should be talking to the people running the GOP and the tea parties, though, because they seem to be kowtowing to the hard-right talibangelists.

Can you show me any non-Christian Tea Party or GOP leaders? Because every so-called Christian claims to "feel and talk to the spirits of the dead". I'm willing to bet that every political leader you've supported does that.

And while you're at it, can you show me how a Mars mission is in any way a proper function of government? I mean, I know *I* dig space exploration, but all you "small gubmint!" types really have no place being happy about this mission, do you?

Who?

Every political leader DOES do that, and yet you felt the need to omit criticizing those on the Left for doing exactly what those on the Right do.

I don't care if elected officials talks to Mr Hat, as long as they can cut back on the lunacy of massive debt that's accumulated.

And why the hell did YOU feel it necessary to interject politics and religion into a thread concerning the Mars Curiosity landing?

Troll much ?

And while you're at it, can you show me how a Mars mission is in any way a proper function of government? I mean, I know *I* dig space exploration, but all you "small gubmint!" types really have no place being happy about this mission, do you?

Yes, we do have a place in being happy about this. Roads and bridges are to the benefit of all, as well as a standing military, for the common defense. I approve of this type of spending, as it doesn't infringe onto the rights of any others, and benefits ALL humanity, not just US citizens.

Technically speaking, no, it doesn't fall in w/ what the Founding Fathers might have viewed as " the proper function of govt ", but hey... sometimes you gotta say " What the fuck ".

Most of which was accumulated under GOP leadership, by the way. You routinely fail to mention that, and you routinely follow GOP leaders who claim that "deficits don't matter." So you don't care who they're talking to, as long as they're speaking your language, eh?

Does NASA not spend taxpayer money on these missions? That makes it political. If you have a problem with religion being brought up in a discussion about science, take it up with your political party and tell them to knock that shit off.

Did you just imply that "you didn't build that"?

How does a Mars mission aid the common defense? You're not so stupid as to believe we're being invaded by Martians, are you? (I'm honestly not sure anymore when it comes to what level of lunacy you'll believe)

So you're fine with blowing taxpayer money on stuff just because you get off on it, regardless of whether or not it's a legitimate government function. Just not when it comes to the health of the American people. Got it.

A complete and total lie, by the way. But that's what you do. Say and post anything, no matter how wrong, twisted or distorted from reality.

Meh.

Glad we're on Mars again, props to NASA, for doing what it was DESIGNED to do, ( and not teach Muslim nations to feel good about themselves ) and here's to continued success for Curiosity and her team !
