Gonna be a fun weekend round here coming up, the Yankee Air Museum down the way is having a pretty epic show, including some old friends of mine, thus making my appearance somewhat mandatory.

Yes, this includes the P51 trainer pilot I annoyed into near-insanity that one time, 15 minutes in that thing is fun, full flight time is NOT, especially right after downing 44oz of coffee...
No chance of me scoring a ride on the Yankee Lady (B17G) this time around though, they're prettymuch booked up.

Get a tour of Fifi if you get a chance. Impressive bird.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Don't forget your sunscreen.

No matter how much tan I got, I always get a sunburned face at airshows from looking up at the planes for so long.

Love to hear those RR Merlins at full song.

No dice, the owner of Fifi thinks I am "Bad Luck", in a superstitious kinda way and wouldn't let me near the damn thing even if I did have the gall to ask.

As for the Merlin Roar, I match that and see you the Vulcan Howl.

THAT is eerie-scary.

There's also the Jericho Siren, bonus points if you know what one is.

Right in one...

Of course, the Germans were more than a little afraid themselves of a different noise from the sky, that eerie slow whistle which preceded the Night Witches.
http://mysite.pratt.edu/~rsilva/witches.htm
Quote:

The Witches would fly to a certain distance of the enemy encapments that were to be the target, and cut their engine. They would then glide silently, silently... When the Fascists started to hear the whistle of the wind against the Po-2's wing bracing wires, they realized in panic that it was too late. The Night Witches would sneak up on them and release their bombs, then restart their engines and fly away home.

That had to be a serious brick-passer moment, yeah.

It was made all the more a pissable moment because of a couple things:

The bombing would come at any hour of the night, meaning there was never a good time to try to get some sleep, which amped up the psychological damage by leaving German troops on the ground with shattered nerves, twitchy and jumpy at the least noise in the dark.

Also, the Russians used the fact that these were women to good psychological advantage. In Nazi Germany, women were breedmares, keepers of the home and hearth, but NOT soldiers, NOT workers; they were mothers and housefraus, much like June Cleaver. A woman at war was a repugnant thought to Germans, and it really freaked a lot of the soldiers out to realize that they were up against Russian women; it not only offended them because of the preconceptions about the role of women in society, but it also freaked them out because it hammered home the realization that by putting women into combat, the already huge Russian military effectively doubled its own size.

And the Russians were not shy about propagandizing their employment of women in the war. They also had groups of female snipers, some of whom I've seen pictures of. Imagine a petite, gorgeous young Russian woman wielding with deadly accuracy that damnable Moisin-Nagant rifle that kicks like a mule on crack. Now imagine she's shooting AT YOU.

Here's one of the best, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, who recorded 309 confirmed kills, making her the top female sniper in history.

Here's Roza Shanina:

Now go try to get a decent night's sleep, and good luck with that!
