I wonder how many 'major blows' we must deal to al Qaeda before we can bring the war to an end?

This will remain a problem for some time. Eventually they will either become irrelevant and face away, moderate and get assimilated, or commit an act so horrible we wipe out their state sponsors and safe havens.
