Freedom is Important because People are Important

Backyards leased for $5,000 an acre
Eastern Ohio residents are cleaning up from the state's fracking boom, with 1,000 new jobs at a local plant and great rates for leasing the land in their backyards.

Ohio's mysterious man-made earthquakes
Youngstown, Ohio has seen 11 earthquakes since March and scientists say injection of fracking waste deep underground triggered them

Hello,

These are two stories currently circulating at CNN.

I saw them via http://money.cnn.com/video/news/2012/01/16/n_ohio_boomtown.cnnmoney/?i
id=GM

which is a link to their video stories. I can only read the briefs at my current location.

I'm surprised people are still leasing to frackers given the preponderance of information about the dangers. Perhaps in the current economy, $5,000 is life-saving for some folks. Short-term survival trumps safety?

Short term survival trumps long term survival. They're giving up their private property rights by giving the fracking companies their mineral claims. No good can come of this.

An attitude that cannot be summed up any better than the post immediately after yours.

That's your pick up line, isn't it?

Just talked to someone from Eastern OH - they told me of a friend who bought a piddly little plot for $99,000 some years ago and built a little 2 bedroom house on it they never liked. Gasman just sent them a check for $500,000 + residules. They say the residules can be even more money than the initial fee.
I really can't blame them, I can blame the gas people though.

Hero,

I thought you were from California.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I'd never heard of fracking until I came here. Now I'm hearing it being discussed--in negative terms where I'm reading/hearing about it, which I think is a good thing. If it gets into the lexicon and people hear about it, hopefully that will evolve into something being done. Or not...

Hero's just an asshole, we all know that, so he means nothing. His need to boast about having two women says everything that needs saying. Sad.

On the other hand, at this rate, Hero's going to out-breed any of us, and the next generation of the US will be composed of little Heros.
