Last year. Not particularly current, just wondering the practical application of this.

But is it really that much faster?

2 masted schooner Mari-Cha IV, also in the 40+ column on short runs, I think it doesn't qualify for the competition, due to its canting keel.

bested the distance record set a century earlier by the atlantic, both in the 20+ column

Couldn't find the Atlantic II under sail.

ETA: I mean as a video. Here's the boat:

I like sailing boats a lot, my family had one briefly when I was in college, my little brother called it Slicer because it sliced through the water. When my mother and her husband sold it lil' bro and I were most displeased. I guess for them it was a phase, but for us it was wonderful.

Those sailors better be careful when they get down Samalia way, they're liable to get ambushed by pirates like those other people recently.

Yes, parents don't seem to notice that they're often destroying the world of children when they make financial decisions.

That was a rather gruesome tale in Somalia, and, I'm afraid, a set up. No one should be cruising off the coast of Somalia, whether they're distributing bibles or not. The couple was being escorted by three american war ships, which seems like a lot for one yacht.

The current maritime rule on dealing with pirates is "non-lethal deterrence" which conflicts with the US position "pirates are terrorists." Obviously no one on the open see wants military vessels to have an excuse to fire carte blanche on ships, so this created quite a stir. The conspiracy here is that the Christians were told that it would be okay by the military who knew that it wouldn't be, and the confrontation with a missile cruiser and two destroyers may have escalating the violence of the situation, though the military claims not. At any rate, in addition to the couple, two crew members and two pirates were killed.

ETA: There are radar systems out there being fine tunes to detect pirate skiffs, which is what you have to worry about. Once you can see them, you also need some way to do something about them, but you really don't want to be in any sort of combat in a skiff.

The skiffs don't travel too far from base, if that base is a mothership, count the mothership as an almost immovable object compared to any of the ships above. Pirates are trying this sort of mothership arrangement, but I suspect it will have serious consequences. If someone catched the skiff, I'd think the mothership is pretty much done for.
