For one, once again I am not getting notifications from FFF, so if anyone has PM'd me and I've not responded, that may be why. Just FYI 'cuz a few have, before I stopped getting notifications. Sigh...

E-mail me instead, if you want to message me. Again: Nikovich@pacbell.net

Second, someone asked about cleaning up beaches in another thread, I forget who. I know one of the things volunteers ARE being allowed to do is beach pre-cleanup (see below). I got notifications from an organization doing some of that. They were holding a one-day event, which is over, but contacting them might be worthwhile. I've seen photos and articles indicating volunteers are now cleaning beaches here and there, not just BP employees, by the way, and will keep a lookout for info.

The e-mail I got was from:

The Louisiana Gulf Response Involvement Team (GRIT) has been hard at work to identify safe and meaningful volunteer opportunities as well as secure resources to engage volunteers. To date, we have hosted three beach clean-ups and two marsh restoration projects. Please see the Times-Picayune article on our latest event.

The first step in the fight against oil is to reduce the amount of debris in the potential impact zones to the west of the current oiled shorelines. Debris and trash that collects on our shorelines can potentially get covered in oil and make the clean-up of these natural areas even more complicated. GRIT has partnered with Shell Oil Company to conduct a beach clean-up along the Cameron Shoreline at Mae’s Beach.

Project Cameron Shoreline Beach Cleanup
Where: Mae’s Beach
When: Wednesday, July 21, 2010
9:30 am to 2:00 pm

This project is being completed through funding provided from Shell Oil Company.

All planting equipment (gloves, shovels, dibbles, etc.) will be provided. Lunch and drinks will be provided to all volunteers. Detailed information will be emailed to all registered volunteers prior to the event. Space is limited.

GRIT can be found at http://www.lagulfresponse.org/ -- it says they're just registering people now, but that's old, if you register, you will be contacted like I was about events.

The other was from Audubon, regarding a webcast on how one could help with coastal bird survey training and how you can enter your own observations in eBird, the online bird observation database developed in partnership with Cornell Laboratories. I know one of the things they're letting volunteers do is watch for oiled birds and report them, tho' that's not very exciting and would be very time consuming, so I'm not sure anyone not living right there would be interested.

If whoever it is who asked about this stuff would contact me, I could get you any information I receive.
