All hail The Onion for this one - most of their stuff is boring, but this one was over the fence!

During oral arguments, Charleston's chief counsel Dan Roy said his clients could restrict any public speech they deemed offensive, an argument quickly dismissed by Justice John Paul Stevens, 90, who turned to his colleagues and made a repeated up-and-down hand motion intended to simulate masturbation.

*laughs*

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I wondered if that was going to show up here. I almost got kicked out of a local taco shop while waiting for my breakfast tacos, I was laughing so hard. They kinda tend to look at you funny when you're by yourself and doubled over laughing.

An excerpt from Justice Steven Breyer's opinion:

MINCINGBEAST

A shame that one of our most vital rights is squandered this way. I recognize that health of the First Amendment requires that we protect those with nothing to say but "fuck", but saying fuck for the sake of the sound does not do justice to the awesome power of profanity.

I love and hate cussing. I love its shock value, which is diluted by common use. I wish I were the only person capable of cussing. Then I would be mighty.

I stand by my observation that people only believe in free speech that they agree with, platitudes about "defending your right to say it" aside.

Hell, I believe in EVERYONE'S right to free speech. *ESPECIALLY* those with whom I so vigorously and vehemently disagree. After all, without the right of free speech, how would they say all those inane things that make them look like the complete assholes they truly are? :)
