"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Just heard it on the news; Alex Chilton died yesterday in New Orleans, of an apparent heart attack. Probably best known for his 1967 song "The Letter", he went on to be a seminal influence on the entire indie-alt-rock scene for a generation, with bands like Big Star and songs like "September Gurls".

He was 59 years old. He'll be missed, but never replaced.

I would have no idea who Mr. Chilton was, were it not for the Replacements. He'll be missed.

Ditto - it was their "Pleased to Meet Me" album that made me look into who the heck they were writing a song called "Alex Chilton" about. Chilton guested on the song, too. :)

I *think* it was Paul Westerberg who said that only a thousand people ever bought Big Star's records, but all of them started bands. Might have been Billy Corgan; either way, they ripped the line from REM's Peter Buck, who said it of Lou Reed's Velvet Underground...

And dammit, they were supposed to play SXSW this weekend. I've been down to a few shows, since I've got friends working some of the venues, but haven't seen much of anything to write home about.

I liked Natalia Zuckerman's short set last night. One girl with a guitar, a bottleneck slide, and a hatful of songs she wrote. She's a good songwriter and a better slide player than Bonnie Raitt.

are you sure? I swear the same thing has been said of the sex pistols and big black...and the stooges...;)

"Alex Chilton" is one of my favorite Mats songs--I remember listening to it as a little kid and wondering "Who is this dude that Paul Westerberg would like to meet on the moon?" I was never a devoted fan of Big Star, but Chilton was one of the good 'uns. Sucks that he's gone.

Nope, not sure of it at all. I know I heard SOMEONE say it of Big Star, but can't remember who. Still holds true for all of them, though.
