BBC reporters and other helpful types often labour mightily to find what they consider hidden, coyly inexpressed, conciliatory meanings in the speeches of the leaders of Hamas, the fundamentalist Islamic organization which controls the Gaza Strip. But they’ll have a hard time prettying up the speech Ismail Haniyeh delivered on Monday in Gaza City.

Facing a crowd estimated to be in the “tens of thousands”, the Hamas senior official (he is sometimes referred to as “Hamas’s prime minister”) trumpeted that his organization’s seizure of the Strip in 2007 after routing the Fatah party was “just a step toward liberating all of Palestine”. He said: “This movement liberated the Gaza Strip … Brothers and sisters, we will not be satisfied with Gaza. Hamas looks toward the whole of Palestine.”

Combined with the news that Hamas is accelerating weapon procurement via a system of tunnels on its Egyptian border and “has smuggled in dozens of long-range Iranian-made rockets“, Monday must have been an uneasy day for Hamas’s neighbors on the West Bank and in Israel.
