Zeituni Onyango, the half sister of Obama’s late father, has lived in the United States illegally in public housing for years and suffers from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a neurological disorder connected to vaccinations.

Onyango told the Associated Press that her immigration status is a political liability for Obama and because of that she has not reached out to him. Obama and his family have not reached out to her either, she said. The Obamas are her only family in the United States.

Obama’s estranged aunt moved to the United States in 2000 and applied for asylum in 2002. Her request was rejected and she was ordered deported in 2004. She did not leave the country and continued to live in public housing in Boston.

In a study conducted in 2004 of 54 people afflicted with Guillain-Barre, 57% of the patients had received an influenza vaccine, followed by 22 % of the patients who had received a hepatitis vaccine either as a single vaccine or in combination with other vaccines. The results of the study suggest that vaccines other than influenza can be associated with Guillain-Barre.
