Oh, come on, Jack - that was a given, no matter WHAT happens or WHO wins an election!

I think it's time to get on Frem's bandwagon and start supporting sin taxes on EVERYTHING. Sodas, Big Macs, online porn, SUVs, gasoline, etc.

Why? Because maybe - JUST MAYBE - it would force people to see what they've been doing to others for all these years.

I finally gave up smoking, for good, 6 months ago. At least I *hope* it's for good. I'm tired of buying new yachts for the board of directors at Philip Morris.

Well, at least you could say the Repubs were consistant in their evil/stupidity. Another thing shelfed until another administration comes along - actually funding the "Wars". No, increasing the war budget doesn't count when they're just borrowing money from China. All their talk about "Support the Troops or else!" and they REFUSE to do the #1 method of support: calling for a sacrifice from the people in the form taxes.

If the Dems increase taxes NOW after the Somnambulant Public have had it relatively easy the last 8 years --because people are stupid and have short memories, mind you-- they will get upset :crybaby: and vote the Repubs back into the majority in 2010. And then another cycle starts.

CRAP!

I'm rarely close on these things...

If she wants to add a tax to pay for the war let's tell her we don't have the money for it this month, she should come back and try later. Maybe she could raise it by giving blood?

I say the same thing too, but since the taxes never go down I don't wish that power taken away from anyone.

For instance... I don't like sweets. Give me a smoke or a bag of Doritos and I'm down, but I'll pass on the donuts.

But a doughnut shouldn't cost a doughnut lover 3 times its actual value because it's overseeing government is taking 2/3rds the profit of every sale in the name of public health or keeping insurance costs down.

I'll be in the small faction of smokers burned that are still going to keep fighting and aruguing for everyone else's right to do what it is they want to do within the law without being taxed to death for it.

Divided we fall............

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Even if you're not American give thanks for your family and friends.

Even if you're an atheist and you have good family and friends you did something right, huh?

Pat yourselves on the back and do something nice for the people you care about today.

One step ahead of ya, Jack.

I am doing a "late" set of rounds at site three in about half an hour, and an "early" set right after that to give better coverage, so folks can have their thanksgiving in peace without having to worry about any security related issues - and not having any taste for the sham and fluff, will have my turkey dinner with the cats somewhere in between, and will temporarily lift the restriction on table scraps.

As for taxes, politicians are ALWAYS open to new taxes, on anything, for any reason, and no tax is ever "temporary" - look up the telephone line tax of 1898 if you disbelieve me.

Oh, FYI, for you Jack - came to the point where trying to work driving a cab was actually COSTING me money, thanks to the effing taxes, and my currency clouting got shut down by rabid asshats looking for even MORE tax revenue, so I rolled the proceeds and my previous history and rep in the industry into a small security biz specializing in cheap residential/industrial security, since all the "goons" have signed on with those juicy Gov contracts which allow them to act like the brownshirt bitches that they are, and there was a paucity of folk willing to do honest work.

We've all but replaced the police on this ass end of the county, and as a result, crime has plummeted, isn't that odd ?

-Frem

PS. I derive far more personal satisfaction in knowing my actions bring ease to the minds of the residents than I would playing sham social games with people I do not like and can not respect.

Spanish American war tax, that was an issue recently. I think I'm still being charge for it in my DSL bill.

Meanwhile, I oppose sin taxes. They give govt. a vested interest in the success of the sin industry. Note how the govt. and oil industry are joined at the hip. Just a possibility, but state govts. generally now can't function without that gas tax.

We are constitutionally allowed two taxes, and these are apportioned. No flat taxes like FICA are ever constitutionally okay:

1. A tax on imports, Tariffs equivalent to the whatever is merited by the balance of trade, generally as a basis I'd say, "whatever they are charging us." Right now, China charges us 50%, we charge them zip.

2. Corporate income tax on any earnings not reinvested in the business.

These two taxes alone are more than sufficient to run the country, especially if we allow the minting of our own currency, and disregard the notion that the US is responsible for "debt" to corporations that allocated fiat proxy notes representing that currency, much less any mortgaged backed or other derivatives.

Oh, and if we cut out a few things from the budget, we'd be swimming in cash:

1. Foreign wars, and anything associated with them, such as military aid to foreign countries involved in foreign wars, in short, anything that does not have to do with the defense of the united states.

2. Welfare to the rich, handouts to corporations, and welfare payments to households with net assets in excess of a million dollars (these comprise one third of welfare recipients, but two thirds of welfare dollars.)

Nope, not since 2006 when folks like me shot it down when no one else was looking, all nice and quiet like.

You could have even gotten some of the money back, had you known about it - the gov went to some pretty great pains (up to and including mailing notices six months too late) to keep folks from doing that.

Of course, if your unscrupulous provider is still charging you for it (and by many accounts, a lot of em still are!) you should call them out on it and threaten them legally.

They might be. One thing I've noticed is that when companies want to keep charging you random fees that no longer apply, they change the name.

You have any details on this tax, it's % etc, so I might be able to spot it?

The funding for the expansion of the war can be totally covered by using some of the $787 Billion stimulus money. Most of that amount has not yet been spent.
