Apprehension is growing among many scientists that the cause of all this may be a class of chemicals called endocrine disruptors. They are very widely used in agriculture, industry and consumer products. Some also enter the water supply when estrogens in human urine — compounded when a woman is on the pill — pass through sewage systems and then through water treatment plants.

These endocrine disruptors have complex effects on the human body, particularly during fetal development of males.

Wow. It IS in our nature to destroy ourselves, init?

Time to move on and destroy a different planet.

Bingo.

I've been saying for a while now that birth control and estrogen mimicking compounds finding their way into the water supply and various foods could be a likely cause of the increased rate prostate, breast, and ovarian cancer we've been seeing recently. Is anyone really surprised? We've been messing around with hormones and other chemicals without knowing the full long term effect of exposure to them, or fully understanding the body pathways that respond to these compounds.

I don't eat cows, pigs or birds in part to avoid chemicals & homrmones, and it's in the water anyway.

Definitely a problem that needs adressing. :(

Weirdly, I'm mostly glad this is a sort of balanced article on the subject, though. I've seen ones that try to blame this entirely on birth control pills, which as mentioned in the quote, account for only a small amount of the hormones that affect us.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Just wait until nanotechnolgoy becomes widely disseminated.

We should have strapped him into a glider, filled it nose heavy w/ explosives, and dropped his Allah lovin' ass into a large, empty field. After which, release wild boars into the area so they could make good use of his remains. Now THAT's justice.- rappy

Yeah, that's what Sheikh Issa said. Seems you both have a lot in common.- signy

*Shudder*

Yeah, I'm going to say that if self-replicating nanotech ever gets in the water, I hope to be dead by then.

Also, in defense of haggis, I tried some once before I became vegan. It actually just looks and tastes like a spicy beef hash, and it's often not stuffed into the traditional packaging anymore.
