Cities can come up with all kinds of excuses to push a landowner off their property to further their city development agenda. And they'll go to some length to secure legal support for their actions, exploiting loopholes or abusing science.

Detecting contamination on a nearby property can be enough, even if there's no real evidence the property owner in question is responsible.

So, you suspect what's going to happen, you think ethically it's wrong. What do you do? Who do you contact?

You got prettymuch two options, bend over and take it - or play dirty, that's about it.

The media and aclu are kind of a given, but generally useless.

I would recommend local activists who aren't too exactly concerned about bending a few rules themselves.

Frem is right, you are totally screwed if the City wants your property. A recent Supreme Court decision reaffirmed the right of Cities to take property even for commercial development. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/23/AR2005

The best you can hope for is that they will give you above market value to get you to leave without a fight.

Hmm. Thanks, Frem, Kirkules. Think maybe I'll do some research then.

1. Find a media reporter who has in the past reported negatively on the particular politician or group that is targeting you. Invite them for an interview.
A recent Pulitzer winner (this year) got it for a story on abuse of power or malfeasance in Maricopa County.
