Not that I have an opinion on this, but this seemed to say they would ban it in supplements, not "food".

And correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there some negative side effects to B6 overdoses, nerve damage of some sort, though reversible?

I don't care either way, but this may have played into the decision to ban it from supplements, since it is very easy to overdose using those.

If true, this looks at best to be a case of overzealous and under-intelligent bureaucracy at work.

Research done on pyridoxamine indicated it could inhibit glycation which is the linking of proteins with sugar, which often causes the severe consequences of diabetes such as retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy; and which (at present) is thought to be the major cause of aging (rather than oxidative stress caused by oxygen free-radicals).

BioStratum, using of course work done by government-funded research, decided to cash in on the freebie research and developed Pyridorin(TM) as a drug to prevent the complications of diabetes: "Pyridorin(TM), a small molecule that inhibits the formation of harmful advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), was recently granted Fast Track status by the FDA and is currently advancing through Phase IIb clinical trials for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy. AGEs are widely held to be a cause of diabetic late complications such as kidney disease (nephropathy), blindness (retinopathy), and nerve damage (neuropathy)."

It petitioned the FDA in 2005 to remove pyridoxamine - a naturally occurring form of vitamin B6 - from a list supplements. In order to do that it had to show that it had NOT been marketed before 1994 and was therefore grandfathered in.

I went to the FDA website to see if any ruling had been made since the 2005 petition and didn't find any notice on their website. However, there are many websites carrying this story. It's possible that the organizations are on an FDA email list and get advanced notification, and that the ruling is simply not on the FDA website yet.

If indeed the story is true and the FDA has made that ruling:

Ever had an allergic reaction to a high dose of B6? I have. Not fun. Skin goes bright red (flushed), you feel very hot, nerve endings all tingly, jangly, and burning, head spinning, vertigo and nausea, and racing heartbeat.

How high was the dose? A Centrum multivitamin, that's how high.

Everyone needs SOME B6, but some people have really extreme reactions to anything more than a tiny amount of it.
