Sad to hear of the passing of the great Jazzman, "Fathead" Newman, who died at the age of 75 last Tuesday. Fathead had deep roots in the Dallas community including a dozen years as a band member, featured performer and sidekick of Ray Charles.

I Remember Brother Ray was his last recording, released January '05.

We'll miss you David.

"I never got jazz"

that's too bad AU - Jazz is a true American art form - granted some, like say, jazz-fusion is not for everyone -but the classic stuff, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, John Coltrane just to name a few is worth taking the time to listen to.

If nothing else, try Miles Davis's Kind of Blue.... and see if you "get it".

I'll respect Mile Davis, even though I'd never listen to him. But I still don't get Jazz. Never will. It's like poetry. I hate the stuff, as a rule. Sure, there may be some random poems which don't suck. Usually if they're short, which is next to never.

One of my favorite lines about poetry goes something like this....

" a poem is never finished, only abandoned "

So very true.

DREAMTROVE

Jazz is the random inter-relationship of common intervals. It's an experiment in improvization without leaving the theater of what would be considered music. It's the key component of the randomization that occurs in modern pop music. I'd put it up there with harmony and counterpoint as an evolutionary achievement. There's some jazz I like, but I don't listen to straight jazz that much. I listen to a fair amount of stuff that draws from jazz. The day of jazz is probably done, but the contribution will live on.

ah, variety... the spice of life.

I don't agree that the days of jazz are over - I will admit that it is not as popular a form as say, rock or country (the music of pain), but contemporary artists like Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Bad Plus, & Ahmad Jamal Trio are pushing the envelope and creating new music from old jazz roots. I for one, will always appreciate the form - and vinyl....

to each his own

Oh, jazz will live on, it just won't take center stage, not by itself. Like classical, it exists, but in films, or within symphonic heavy metal, and yes, by itself, but on the side streets. Which is okay. And if you're reading this, you'll realize what I've done.
