Police suspect giraffe in circus breakout
Mon Jun 30, 1:02 PM ET

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Fifteen camels, two zebras and several llamas and pot-bellied pigs escaped from a circus visiting Amsterdam early Monday, police said.

"We suspect that a giraffe kicked open a pen," Dutch police said in a statement, adding that the animals did not get far before they were rounded up and returned to the circus.

**************************************
First of all there's the issue of profiling. Lets face it...giraffe's tend to stand out in a crowd. Folk might not notice all the animals...but I bet the all saw the giraffe.

Then the lineup:
"Number three, step foreward..."
"That's him, I'd recognize that neck anywhere."

Then there is the legacy of abuse. Dragged from Africa, caged like and animal, forced to perform...and for what? Peanuts. And this sort of thing has been going on for hundreds of years.

And what's with the "pot-bellied pigs" crack? Just because they carry a little extra weight does not mean they deserve such verbal abuse.

Now I know there are those here that believe that these animals deserve to be in their cages. Now, gentlemen, I must say I differ with the keen minds of the Zoo, the Circus, and with our Democratic Party, who apparently shares their views, offering that the natural state of animals is instead -- and I know this is a controversial idea -- is freedom. Is freedom. And the proof is the length to which a elephant, camel, or even a giraffe will go to regain it, once taken. He will break loose his chains, He will decimate his enemies. He will try and try and try against all odds, against all prejudices, to get home.

Now, if he were human, he wouldn't be standing before this court fighting for his life. If he were human and his enslavers were Islama-facists, he wouldn't be able to stand, so heavy the weight of the medals and honors we would bestow upon him. Songs would be written about him. The great authors of our times would fill books about him. His story would be told and retold in our classrooms. Our children, because we would make sure of it, would know his name as well as they know Patrick Henry's.

The other night I was talking with my friend, Mr. Giraffe. He was over at my place, and we were out in the greenhouse together. And he was explaining to me how when a member of the Giraffe Global Union and Tree Trimming Service-- that's his people -- how when a member of the GGUTTS encounters a situation where the food is really far away, he invokes sticks his neck out to survive. It's a tradition. See, the GGUTTS believe that if one can summon the stick one's neck out then they can reach that food and the wisdom and strength will survive and prosper. And that is an American tradition as well.

James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Adams: We've long resisted asking you for guidance. Perhaps we have feared in doing so we might acknowledge that our necks don't reach the great heights of your own. Perhaps we've feared an appeal to you might be taken for weakness. But, we've come to understand, finally, that this is not so. We understand now, we've been made to understand, and to embrace the understanding that who we are is who we were.

We desperately need your strength and long necks to triumph over our fears, our prejudices, our-selves. Give us the courage to do what is right. And if it means civil war, then let it come. And when it does, may it be, finally, the last battle of the American Revolution.
