Keep the Shiny side up

Why wasn't the Ecuadorian government doing anything about them?

Why is Venezuela so jacked up, since their sovereignty wasn't violated?

Did the Columbian government really find a laptop in FARC 2nd in command Reyes' camp documenting $300 million in support from Venezuela?

Chavez's reaction makes little sense. Its like the US going to war with Mexico because they had a border dispute with Belize.

Was Columbia wrong for violating Ecaudor's borders? Yes. Was Ecaudor wrong for allowing FARC to have their bases there? Yes. How does this involve Venezuela? There is no real connection.

It is highly likely that Chavez is in the business of supporting Leftist organizations throughout the region. With his money and ambitions he has apparently become deeply embedded with these proxies who were in search of a benefactor since the early '90s.

Also war with Columbia has other benefits. It destabilizes a US ally in the region. If the US supports Columbia, then Chavez has justification to cut off the supply of oil to the US and nationalize remaining US company assets. He can do this without fear of reprisal because the US would never, in his opinion, muster the political will to force a military solution, especially in an election year.

Even if we do find our collective balls, we lack the military strength to invade Venezuala to restore oil shipments. We could embargo or blockade Venezuela. Regardless of the solution the price of oil skyrockets.

Since many feel the best way to beat the US is to cripple our economy with high oil prices, recent events may be a part of this strategic goal.

Buckle your seatbelts folks, I just realized we're living in the '70s again (should have known watching shows like Galactica and the Bionic Woman).

Anyway, there is a way out. Chavez has considerable domestic opposition. Like many of relatively peaceful popular uprisings, this one finds its base in the suppression of the Catholic Church. While his opposition is by no means strong enough to unseat him at this time, they have been demonstrating (literally) more and more efectivness in recent years (including defeating his attempt to become President for life last year).

Even if they did find this " lap top ", $300 million is peanuts vs the $5 billion the US has supplied to suppress FARC since 2000, of course this is only the public money.

I think considering recent efforts and the negotiated release of hostages ( done thru the effort of Chavez ) the actions of the Columbian government show that they are not interested in any peace talks or compromise that may lead to the peace table. Regional Stability will not be served this way, as Latin American powers including Chile, Mexico and Brazil have offered to mediate in the dispute hopefully we will soon find out if Alvaro Uribe is at all interested in talking, or if Columbia is really the Israel of Latin American.

Hmmm I think your right

US President under fire for bad policy making and lying to the public

US loses a war, and is driven out of a foreign country

US faces a massive recession

very nearly a rerun

Chavez might be crazy enough to cut off oil to the US, but if he does he won't be in power more than a few months. If he cuts off US oil it will cause a temporary disruption in the oil supply, but will have zero net effect on the balance of supply/demand in the world. The oil market is a world market and if he sells his oil to China, we'll by the oil the Saudis don't sell to China because of it. The other reason Chavez would be shooting himself in the foot by trying to harm the US using his oil is that the infrastructure isn't set up to transport Venezuelan oil elsewhere. It would cost Venezuela much more to ship their oil elsewhere. We can survive a lot longer without Venezuelan oil than Chavez can survive without US dollars. He'll have riots in the streets in no time if he cuts off the oil flow.
