The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

Bah! We're America! People won't call in their debts, and they won't stop lending us money either! We don't need an fucking money in the bank, we can just print or borrow when we need more!

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Yeah, but that's not even a trillion dollars, so it's not like you're talking about REAL money here, right?

Bush had an opportunity to make America the light of the world, but he instead opted to make us the laughing stock of the world. Mission Accomplished!

Mike

Who do you have to blow around here to get an impeachment?

While I agree with you we need to be fair, Bush stepped into an office with a long and glorious history of losing money, IIRC the only president for several decades who had ended his tenure with a net positive financial adjustment was Clinton, so it's not like Bush was doing something new. He's just a lot better at it.

Of course, this isn't a net worth evaluation either. Hopefully our assets are worth more than our debts.

Still...

It makes me want to vote for anyone who is running on just this platform: debt reduction.

1. Get out of the war in Iraq and all other wars. Sorry, guys, we're broke. We gotta go home and feed our own kids.

2. Stop all foreign aid. Sorry guys, we're broke. I hear China has money.

3. Stop all corporate welfare and government subcontracting. Cmon--you're either privately competing in the market or government. Private subcontractors mooching off govt taxpayer money is the sorriest shit in the world. If it is important enough for govt to fund, then it is important enough for govt to run. Otherwise, get off your ass and work for a living.

I heartily accept the motto, "That government is best which governs least"; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe: "That government is best which governs not at all"; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.
--Henry David Thoreau
