Yes, another idiotic and mostly unnecessary taser incident, BUT, it's the departments response which for once makes sense.

"The Sheriff's Office has suspended their use until a more detailed policy and training program are created."

SMART move - not quite as smart as actually having done that *before* someone got stupid, but with less than a year of deployment it's likely abuse/misuse of the devices hasn't really calcified yet.

To the officer's credit, he used the device in drive-stun mode (basically a moderately painful cattleprod effect) rather than actually firing it (which is the semi-lethal and disabling effect) - and from the story, official reports and testimony, did so because he was afraid of actually harming her with a joint lock.

Once they had her secured in the back, shoulda just left that alone, even if she did pull the cuffs in front of her and kick the seat.. we're talkin all of a mere 65lbs worth of 4' 8" fury here, she's not gonna disable your patrol car from inside unless she turns green and triples in size with a gamma radiation enhanced roar.

SOP for a berserked kid in a secured environment is to keep a loose on em so they don't self-injure and pretend to ignore em, they'll run of gas on their own in a bit, and further attempts to do *anything*, even reason with em, will just provoke, cause you're feeding attention to their cycle.

I doubt dealing with a zerked-out little girl was prolly any part of this officers training curriculum, and file his actions under not knowing any better - AND he acted with restraint and a bare minimum of force as he perceived it.

No discipline required, but further training suggested, specifically dealing with juvenilles and how to handle.

He did try to do right, it was a failure of training, not of discipline.

The departments response also seems hopeful, rather than defensive, so this one's a learning experience rather than a tragedy.

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

Rutherford, who took a full jolt from a Taser in January to demonstrate his faith in their safety, also planned to equip school resource officers with the weapons.
Y'know, I really respect this here. But just 'cause it wasn't too bad on him, doesn't mean an unruly kid with a heart condition would take it as well..

Just sayin' Chrisisall
