I don't know about roving, but I did prosecute a fellow for assaulting a Marine in a bar.

The marine and his buddies were in town burying a buddy from the town next door who had died in Iraq. They went to a bar to toast him and were playing Patriotic country music when another fellow, who had been drinking, took a dislike to their musical choices. Following a confrontation the Marines left and were followed out the door by the guy and his friends and a general melee ensued. Normally we'd just charge everybody and call it square, but the Marines did try to avoid the fight which is above and beyond what you'd normally expect from the Marines, so I decided not to charge them.

Ironically the defendant wanted a jury trial arguing that his very extensive bruising and lack thereof on the marine was proof he was not guilty. I pointed out that "losing a fight" is not a defense. Case closed.

Didn't make the news though...

Edited to add: I note for the record this was not an anti-war thing...it was a drunken idiot thing.

Now I have to take exception with what you say.

(A) MRE's are meant for short term survival. They are not meant to sustain human life for the long term.
(B) I have known many Marines and Soldiers that have found themselves getting sick eating MRE's
(C) I have also known service members , includingmy husband, who have found themselves in the position of having missed chow in the mess hall.

I am not sure where you where lucky enough to have spent your military career. But lucky you were.

Marine - what you have said touched me. It really reminded me of that life.

To those of you who have never been in the military. Junior enlisted are put in a catch-22 situation. They don't make enough to afford a place to live. But if they live in town and get housing allowance then they make too much for food stamps. But they can't live on base, because they are too junior for a house.

It is ridiculous what this country pays these people.

Agreed, and might I add, those Marines showed extraordinary restraint. I say this as a former squid who spent a year aboard Gator Freighters, and got to know a lot of jarheads up close and personal--

Funny think. There's probably more interservice rivalry between USN and USMC than between any other two branches, but in a pinch--or a barroom brawl--they inevitably end up covering each other's backs. Sort of a "nobody picks on my little brother except me" thing.

But don't ask me which one is the little brother. That's how fights start...
