Serenity has only been out a short time but already it seems Universal is planning the DVD release for 20/12..

That cant be a good omen for the cinema run..

The extras sound shiny though.

Actually, it might not be a particularly bad thing. Remember, Joss has kept talking about how Serenity doesn't play by the normal Hollywood rules. Partly that is due to his belief that Serenity will stay around a bit longer due to good reviews and word of mouth.

But part of that is the reality that DVD/home entertainment is the real moneymaker for movie studios right now. There is a complicated ongoing battle between studios, theaters, DVD sellers (aka Wal-Mart), and DVD renters (aka Blockbuster). It simply makes financial sense for the studios to get movies to DVD as quickly as possible. Witness Universal offering movies online starting at the end of the year. Only theaters hate this idea - why would people go to the movies if the DVD was coming out in a couple of months?

But I think Universal is using Serenity as a test case. It was an oddly marketed film from the start anyways, and they may just be trying to see - especially for a movie that will probably make a huge percentage of profit from ancillary (DVD) sales - just how things go releasing the DVD so early.

So, uh, in conclusion, I think this is a good thing.

It's just a pity it's not out a good two weeks before Christmas as a lot of Browncoats shopping list could consist of:

Serenity DVD - 35 copies.
Tinsel - one roll
