May 21, 2005 -- Al-Jazeera, the Arab cable network that regularly broadcasts gruesome pictures of beheaded kidnap victims, refused to show the Saddam photos — because they considered them offensive.
Al-Jazeera has aired video and photos of American soldiers killed — as well as the horrifying beheading last year of businessman Nick Berg of Pennsylvania, and a South Korean civilian.

Jihad Ballout, a spokesman for the Qatar-based network, said al-Jazeera did not show the Saddam pictures "for professional and moral reasons."

"The photo is demeaning to Iraqis," he said.

"From the professional side, it is not news."

In contrast, al-Jazeera's competitor, Al-Arabiya, showed the front-page photo of Saddam that appeared in The Sun newspaper in Britain.

It also aired footage of the bodies of Saddam's two slain sons when their pictures were released by the U.S. military.

Good job, Al-Jazeera.

I think the photos are hilarious and a wonderful way to kick the bastard around but they're not news. Then again, The Sun doesn't normally do news anyway so...

As a former cage kicker employed by the U.S. Army, I agree with Al-Jazeera's decision. The time this tyrant serves behind bars, and whatever sentencing he receives ARE the resulting punishments for his crimes. Publishing his pictures is firmly against the Geneva Convention, particularly: GCIII Art 13

"Prisoners of war must at all times be protected, particularly against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity."

Keep the Shiny side up

At least they resolve the "Boxers or Briefs" question in re Saddam.

The devil in me says I'd rather see photos of his head being cut off, But that's just wrong.

It must be a cultural thing.

Saddam filling his underwear, offensive.
Saddam filling mass graves, not offensive.

For the record, I found the pictures offensive, not because of what they represent, but purely from how he looked.

At first I didn't know whether to laugh or gag.

I laughed.

Maybe the photos are fake, like the Martha Stewart prison photo (I think it was Newsweek or Time Magazine).
