Farm bill and Trump’s glyphosate order magnify pesticides’ ‘watershed moment’

Key Insights

President Donald J. Trump has invoked the Defense Production Act to promote domestic production of glyphosate-based pesticides, potentially giving manufacturers immunity from lawsuits over alleged health impacts and inadequate warning labels.

More than 60,000 lawsuits threaten the viability of Roundup and other glyphosate-based products in the US, according to manufacturer Bayer, which recently proposed a $7.25 billion class settlement.

These actions are part of a larger political brawl over pesticide warnings and manufacturers’ liability, as members of the US Congress seek to shield manufacturers through legislation and the US Supreme Court prepares to hear a related case.

If you don't respond because your intent was to hit and run, I'll take my responce to you.

Trump is a convicted felon.

You can’t defend what Elon and Trump has done to many good Americans. They didn’t go in and find waste and fraud at the government agencies they savaged. They just started firing people. Many of whom they had to recall because they performed much needed services, i.e. nuclear oversight. Or because the courts deemed their firing to be illegal.

You can’t defend against all the science, much of it done at universities and in mid-stream, that Trump has/is destroying. Cancer research stopped cold. The brain drain for the first time in our history; is scientists are leaving because Trump is shutting down grants. You can't defend children in Africa we used to feed are now starving to death.

Agriculture is going to take a severe hit over the next few years. The damage Trump is doing is so extensive the small minds here can't comprehend how bad it is going to get. I'll post a video by Peter Zeihan.

With Trump the term, “destroys everything” applies. So, show me something he hasn’t destroyed. But be prepared to defend it. And don’t post a book you copied. I also don't believe for one second you have America's best interest at heart, comrade.

Finaly, to keep this short, JFK, Trumps boy, fired everybody who worked at a program that helped children make it through the night. To not die while sleeping. A program he couldn’t name. A program that was named after his aunt. Thats the video below.

You don’t understand adult language. I’ve been following the experts and posting it here. You’ve responded with stupid childish rhetoric while refusing to acknowledge facts. Even dismissing the idea, one should listen to the experts.

Well, all I’ve been posting about is front and center and only going to get worse. Trump is acting like a dictator; something I predicted. Prices are going up because of his stupid tariffs; something I predicted. He has undermined the rule of law at every turn; something I predicted. He has done more to send America back into the stone age, while creating a huge brain drain no one could have predicted.

These are just a few of the things I said, based on the experts, that were going to happen. You Gilligan, argued none of these things would happen. And answering this post with more denials is an attitude that plays right into the democrats' hands come 2026. And as I’ve said, based on what the experts say, things are shifting towards a routing of republicans. Take another look at the cartoon I posted. This post is a reflection of that. It says all the same things I've said here. You Jack, are a fake.

Too accurate, not funny.

I think reindustrializing is a laudable goal, don't you?
Why don't we hash that out before tariffs, bc if you don't think the goal is achievable or worthwhile then tariffs are, in your view, entirely counterproductive.

THGR:
I am not against having more manufacturing. We need it. Look what happened during COVID. I think the South lost the civil war because for the most part, they couldn’t make a canon.

SIGNY:
Agreed

So, we agree that manufacturing is important, if for nothing else than making weapons. I would say that basic production is important for sovereignty and independence, bc if you depend on other nations for critical supplies and goods that can be leveraged against you. Look at Japan. It has to do what we tell it, otherwise we could blockade their oil like we did right before WWII.

Quote:

THGR:
Tariffs are for dealing with countries that need tariffs to be placed on them. Trump tariffed the world, and I think it’s sad you can’t differentiate between those two perspectives.

SIGNY:
Wow.
You're either not reading or not comprehending what I posted. I posted over ... and over ... and over ... that I'm good with the CONCEPT of tariffs, but not the way Trump is doing it. IMHO it needs to be sector by sector, infrastructure and supply chains need to be established, and investment assured.

can we agree that reindustrialization is a good thing, and tariffs should be part of the plan, but Trump is making a hash of it?

Also, which countries "need" tariffs, which don't, and on what grounds? Bc AFAIK Trump in putting tariffs on nations that have the largest trade surplus with us.

Quote:

THGR:
And again, Congress, according to the constitution is responsible for tariffs except in individual circumstances. You keep ignoring that Trump is breaking the law by what he is doing. Your posts are nonsensical. Tariffs don’t belong in a conversation about bringing manufacturing home.

SIGNY:
Tariffs are an essential part of bringing manufacturing home. Even when we officially ended tariffs, post WWII it took a couple if decades for other nations to rebuild, so effectively we had protected industry from our founding to roughly 1970. [About 200 years]

THGR:
It’s not about tariffs. It’s about finding ways to bring more manufacturing home that we can sustain. Remember, we live in a society that barters with each other.

SIGNY:
Not true, and apparently you don't understand "barter". Barter is exchanging goods for goods. When we get oil from Saudi Arabia, for example, what "goods" do we send to Saudi Arabia? Cars? Wheat?
The answer is, we don't. We give them money. USD. And Nixon forced them into that deal. That's not barter.

THGR:
The best product sold at the cheapest price wins. We could do everything here but if wages make it too expensive to sell then what's the point?

SIGNYV
I already addressed that point.

But I'll address it in detail.
The purpose of tariffs is to make foreign products more expensive, to put American-made products on a more equal footing. That protects American manufacturing and and American labor.

So, who does this affect?

Let's look at iPhones. Apple pays China an estimated $500 for a phone that retails for $1000- $1200. Cellphones are currently exempt from tariffs, but let's say Trump decides to impose a 50% tariff on Chinese made iPhones.

Suddenly, the retail price could jump to $1500 -$1800, with US gov collecting $500- $600 at the border.

What is Apple to do?

Apple could try to bargain with China to reduce costs. And China could reduce its wages or invest in more automation, but that's unlikely bc they have a deal with their population- staying in power in return for improving standard of living.

China or Apple could move their production to Vietnam or India (altho Indian products usually have poor quality control), shipping Chinese components to Vietnam or India for final assembly. That would probably work until tariffs caught up with them again.

Apple could lower its target retail price to $700- $800, with a final retail price back at $1000- $1200. So Apple's profits fall from $500- $700 per phone to $200- $300 per phone. Not as high, but still profitable. That's a possibility bc Trump knows something you don't: many companies [except Walmart] are making unconscionable profits using cheap labor abroad to sell into our market.

Or Apple could tariff- proof its production and invest in some facilities here.

That's how tariffs work.

Now, that's all well and good as long as we're the consumers.

BUT WHAT ABOUT IF WE'RE TRYING TO EXPORT?

Yep, export prices are VERY sensitive to labor costs.

At that point we ARE competing against low-wage nations, and we face the same issue as all high wage European nations. At that point we need to specialize in certain products that we can produce cheaply (food comes to mind) or products of highest quality or scarcity (Swiss lenses and drugs, Swiss refined gold, Japanese cars ) or great challenge (German ultra- large manufacturing).

However, unlike Germany, Switzerland, and Japan, we're in a fortunate position: With our resources, carefully husbanded, we don't HAVE to trade for much. Therefore, we don't HAVE to compete for markets like so many nations.

I think I've spent enough time on this topic for now.

I'll get to the rest of your posts later.

If apple were to make their phones here. It would take several years to set up a manufacturing plant first. And then those phones would cost about 3.5 thousand dollars each. Look it up. If the entire manufacturing process was moved to the U.S., some say they would cost 30,000 per phone. Stay in reality please and do what I do, deal in facts. This way you won't come off as ignorant.

First topic, was to be about Trump using tariffs the way he is.

Well, for one thing, it is illegal.

His tariffs are killing our relationships with our allies, and weakening our standing and security globally.

They are killing American businesses. Both large and small. It is a huge tax on them and our citizenry. According to our constitution, a president is not allowed to raise our taxes like this. It takes an act of Congress to do that. Again, look it up.

I told you I would show, using your list, how Trump destroys whatever he touches. Not to debate the difference between the effects of tariffs on different countries. And to continually watch you post about the subject with no regard for its legality, when the constitution clearly states what Trump is doing is not.

Who gives a shit about the effect of tariffs on Switzerland vs. another country. Really, get a grip and stop posting bullshit hypotheticals. Stay on topic. Which is, what I don't like about Trumps' policies. That's what you asked me.

In response you keep lecturing me about tariffs, which makes me laugh. The subject is not the pros and cons of tariffs. Or, how they work. The subject is, Trumps tariff policies and what I don't like about them. Which encompasses, are they legal, and what are they doing to the country; pay attention.

You put all that work into your past and current posts and you aren't even on topic. Which is why I've taken to underlining some words. Yano, make it simpler for you to understand lass.

too funny...

You're blowing all kinds of shit about business failures and price increases, and you didn't even bother to see if that was really happening?

IT'S NOT.

See my post, above, with actual... yanno ... FACTS.
So you'll forgive me for not taking you seriously.

There's nothing wrong with tariffs theoretically, and SO FAR they haven't had any negative effects. Only time will tell.

So let's move on from here bc aside from your point that tariffs are illegal (most probably true), you don't have any other arguments.

Let's try a new approach of presenting you with evidence and fact of how Trumps' tariffs are killing America. Argue with this post. Tell me the charts are incorrect.

The ACA is always getting slammed by you guys. It added 20 million people to the ranks of the insured. Here’s the point that shows how full of shit you are. The republicans voted more than 50 times to repeal it. Each time they promised to introduce a much better plan. That bullshit started how many years ago? I’ll tell you. It was March of 2010 when the Affordable Care Act was first introduced.

So comrade, where is their beautiful new and better bill? The one they've been promising since 2010? You're so full of shit. And so’s your post. Trump said it again. During his campaign he would first, create a bigger and better plan before he fucked with health care.

Never ever do you call the republicans and Trump out on that. And they've done it more than 50 times.

Oh yeah China. This all happened before when Trump was president. He had to bail out the farmers. And the moron did it again. And you didn't see it coming? Worse yet, this time the soy market is not coming back; it's gone. Trump made a huge mistake, a huge mistake.

Your bullshit agenda is transparent comrade.

Made in America’ Crushed—7 Shutdowns Signal Total Industrial Retreat

The U.S. manufacturing sector shrank for the fifth month in a row in July 2025. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reported a Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) of 48.0, down from 49.0 in June. A reading below 50 signals contraction, meaning production, orders, and employment are declining.

Factory employment dropped to its lowest level in five years. Companies face rising costs linked to tariffs and shifting demand. This contraction is shaking the foundation of America’s industrial economy.

Plant closures ripple far beyond factory walls. Local tax revenue falls when major employers shut down, reducing funds for schools, roads, and municipal services.

Nearby businesses such as restaurants, shops, and suppliers lose customers and contracts. Entire towns can struggle to stay afloat when anchor manufacturers disappear. This isn’t just an economic story; it’s a human story affecting communities across the country.

You've said that before. I'm still waiting for you to prove me wrong. I post and post and always bring the facts. And the thing is, you act as though I'm making the shit up. You're a complete moron. Here is more evidence Trumps tariffs are destroying companies across America. Common comrade moron, show me I'm wrong.

I spent way too much time going to MSM and other sources to answer your pretty pointless objection. IN DETAIL. WITH FACTS about the ACA in THIS budget impasse.

Since you didn't bother to respond, I'm not wasting any more time on your endless shell games.

You've posted this on the 2nd. After, after, I responded to your posts with 5 or 6 of my own. And if I don't respond with a direct quote, it's because I have no intention of reposting tons of your bullshit with each and every comment. Which is just another form of a rabbit hole. too funny...

Ok, six points about the posts you speak of. Trust me, there are more but I'll keep it simple for you.

Point 1; I respond when I get to it. And because I source most of what I post, I do not understand your MSNBC shit. What I posted about the ACA being under attack, you should know to be factual without being sourced. It’s its history, and what we’ve witnessed since its inception. I reminded you, the republicans voted to repeal it more than 50 times. I reminded you, the republicans vowed to replace it with something better each time, they didn't. I reminded you, Trump vowed to again in his latest campaign; he hasn't. I've asked you why you never mention that? Why you never have held them accountable?

Now, why would you try and source that with MSNBC? Everything else I’ve sourced. If you were honest, you'd admit you can't source anything that disputes what I've posted. And by your own admission in your quoted post here, you sure tried.

Point 2; Much of what you post are subjective rants that are unreadable; boring. And they go on forever. You sabotage the conversation when you do this. Your posts have zero fluidity. Like mine do, and in this case, does.

Point 3; You take a sentence, an incomplete perspective of what someone posts, and address that. You strip away the reasoning for the thought before you respond. This makes your responses deceptive. As a recipient of said posts, I know what you are doing right off. There is no reason for me to do anything but see what can be salvaged from your intended point; if anything, usually not. Hense, your frustration with me.

Point 4, Way too much of your perspective comes directly from Putin's playbook, or in this case the republicans. I already know it. Like the democrats wanting to give health insurance to illegals. Thats all you hear from them, nothing else. Google it and you’ll see it is illegal; simple, case closed. Therefore, it’s stupid, dishonest and a waste of my time reading any of that. So I did not.

Point 5; I’ve posted about the consequences of Trumps tariffs with evidence. You post about the thirties, or some other stupid happenings from long ago. You wasted tons of time trying to teach me about tariffs as if I didn’t know anything about them. Why, because you can’t make a case for them working as intended. So instead, you rant about what could be, not what is. We've been through this. Your deflections didn't work. You've had no success getting me to go down any of your bullshit rabbit holes. Another of your deflections. Again, a waste of my time.

Point 6; No response to my other posts at all; zero. There are five, maybe six back to back that are short, to the point, and unarguable that pertain to your responses. Which explains this post of yours. You saw them and are running away. I don’t blame you. I've told you countless times. I do not post from an ideology. I deal in facts, and no one can argue against facts.

Go home, run, back to your garden thread lass. And take Gilligan with you. He got out again.

Well, there's a lot that needs destroying. One of Trump's best features is that he's a loose cannon.

PS: I've warned SIX against using words like "nobody", and I'm warning you against using words like "everything". There are, in this real world of ours, exceptions to many "universal" statements.

AMERICANS SUPPORT AMERICA

Oil Hits $100/Barrel. That's crude oil. We have to buy refined oil. Add 25$ to 45$ a barrel to the cost the consumer pays. Thank god Biden re-stocked our oil supplies. Although, Trump is burning through that fast.

Not hearing from comrade signym must mean he still can't find anything Trump touched he didn't destroy.
