I don't want to contradict myself here, but there probably is certain things that are interchangable and can get tricky with locality. I don't regularly call them a USB stick. *I did just ask Google AI and they said in the US the most common are "Thumb Drive" and "Flash Drive". But in the UK and Ireland "Memory Stick" and "USB Stick" are the most common. It would appear that at least in your part of Canada they prefer the UK vernacular and you're using entirely different terms for it than I regularly do.



Don't get frustrated about that. Call it what you want. Most people you'd ever talk to about it are going to know what you're talking about no matter what name you use. If somebody was correcting you, that's pretty lame.

I don't know how you did it last night, but you have the option to press the Start Button and then the Power Icon Button and select "Restart" from the list, and you also have the CTRL+ALT+DEL Menu where you would go to the lower right hand corner and press the Power Icon Button and select Restart from the menu.

You are saying that you've never done either of these methods before, correct?

Okay. I don't mean to keep asking you, but I just want to make sure that you've never actually done what we did on the 4th before via any way that you can actually press "Restart".


Don't worry that nobody told you about it. I didn't tell anybody when I put together computers for them either. For decades on the earlier versions I didn't have to. It was just kind of known that things get crappy over time and if the computer is acting up you just power it down and reboot it and usually the problems go away.

I'm kind of annoyed that Microsoft made these changes because with all the dumbing down they've done over the years, I think it's incredibly unintuitive the way they handle it now. I didn't even know everything I'm telling you now until several years after I had installed Windows 10, and I've been using Windows operating systems since 1993.



So this is important to know.

I don't put myself on a timeline for doing restarts. Compared to how you use your computer, I literally drive mine into the ground. I have to do restarts probably every 3 months maximum, but sometimes when I'm doing really heavy work like I was on my project, it wouldn't be uncommon for me to restart it up to twice per week because it was messing up on me pretty bad.

But with how you use it, the only time it ever gets a proper Restart is when you let it do its updates. Every time Windows does an update, it does at least one full Restart process without you pressing the button, so it's not like you've gone for years now without one.

I'd say it would be good practice for you to try to remember to Restart your computer every Solstice and Equinox.

Windows is like that. It brings up something from the hard drive into memory and when it's done with that bit it doesn't completely free up all the memory that was occupied. So after a while the memory gets all clogged with leftover bits and pieces and the computer gets confused. The only way to clear the memory is to restart.

That's how I understand it anyway.

Also, thumb drive, memory stick, USB stick... I'd know what you were talking about no matter which term you used. It's all good.

I rarely seem to have to restart the computer these days for updates, so I figure they've probably hijacked even more of our privacy and our own machinery so they can inject a lot more of their code whenever they want to without alerting us with all those pesky restarts.

I don't think Windows 10 is getting many restarts if at all these days. I think I did have one forced on me after the days-long power outage which made that take even longer to boot up than it usually does, but that's the only one in recent memory on that computer.

Maybe since M$ isn't restting it all the time, Brenda is starting to notice things that never would have creeped up otherwise.

I don't think she was pissed off about you leaving it there. It sounds like she's living in a pen desert and doesn't realize she could walk right down the street and probably find a place selling them within walking distance.

It sounds like she really thought that was an emergency for you and you were completely lost without your pen.

No, I don't think she was either. It was just strange that she was so worried that I didn't have another pen. In my place here. I keep a pen by my computer, I have another one for my writing and another pen that I am using for doing a book filled with puzzles. Also have a package of pens for when the ones in my back pack die.
But yeah, I find one pen that she had been using then I go back to use it and it disappears. So, I start hunting for another one if I do find another one it usually doesn't work.

I know. I know. It just always seems to shock them that I can understand these concepts and discuss my thoughts rationally and logically.

The other was music. I explained a couple of stories from two Chris deBurgh songs. I love Chris deBurgh. One was a "Spaceman came Travelling". In that the suggestion is the star of David wasn't a star but a spaceship in orbit over Bethleham. The other was "Patricia the Stripper." And a stripper was arrested, she was taken to court but after hearing the case. The judge threw it out and everyone went back to the club along with the cops. The song is set in 1924. I posted "Discovery" on here and explained that to him. Even quoted and sang a bit of it. Sang the chorus of "16 Tons" that was originally by Tennessee Ernie Ford. "you load 16 tons, and what do you get. Another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter don't you call me cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store."

Had to remind him that "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" was sung by Gordon Lightfoot and not Stompin' Tom Connors. Also explained how he got the nickname stomping. A little Johnny Cash history. She knows the Beatles as she talked about "Help from My Friends". Don't think she likes the song because "gasp" it talked in one line about getting high.

That's a good way to look at it. Though I think I probably would have had the logic down already to have gotten similar results with how good this thing is able to read what I want done based off of my descriptors. I don't know if our conversation in total has been cut off in the beginning of our 2nd session, but I know the first session is lost if it's not still in the 1st tab that was failing on us but still allowed me eventually to ask it to give me a concise reply of what to post in a new session and not lose our progress.

Other than how it was replying on a "human" level, which didn't take long to get it to do again in the 2nd session, we didn't miss a beat of where we were at on the code with that done. And now on the second session our code needs to be broken up into 2 parts, and our "blueprint" which I need to feed into a new session if ours drops or flakes out to derive that code is now 5 parts long.

These aren't things it was offering to do originally. When the code got too long to post in a single response, it didn't know to split it up on its own because of the size limits. But I noticed the first time it happened and knew why it did, and it said from now on the code would be split into 2 parts, that it should now know to split it into 3 parts when it needs to and that I should let it know if it fails at that and when we should start splitting it into 3 parts.

So now every time it posts updates to the 2 parts of the code, it will also post all 5 parts of our blueprint updated with whatever changes it needed to update in there as well.

I think I've probably understood enough about the logic of coding to have gotten AI at the point it's at in its free state on Google today to do this sort of stuff 20 years ago. But 20 years ago all I had was the ability to try to search coding forums for similar issues people had solved and try to cobble code I only barely understood together and might work after hours of trial and error tweaking it. And that's just one thing. I'll get this thing to write 20 or 30 more lines of code for me that just works by writing out 2 or 3 paragraphs of what I want as if I was writing a post here about what I did today on my house.

Really... I view this as having a personal translator on hand, 24/7.

At some point it started replying a specific phrase about what I'm doing. I know it's got "STEM" in the name, and it's brought that up whenever I bring up a concept to add to the code that brings another temporary file into the mix while we're working. So at some point when we had our part of the code that requires me to manually intervene and approve or disapprove certain items (which we'd narrowed down from a total of over 1,000 items in this test case to only 24 that would need my attention), we now created a temporary cache file which will allow me to only need to approve those items one time during testing, and when I'm ready to run the entire thing from scratch all I need to do is delete that temporary file and then I'll approve/disapprove one last time before the code is actually run.

Oh... and it's good I was running this all on a single test folder because when I finally got through the approval process on the last 24 items (whittled down to that with all of the code changes and rules we've made to this point), it just ran the code on me after the last approval and made a lot of changes to the files and moved a lot to sub-folders of my design. OOPS! It didn't know not to do that because I never asked it to. So now I've got a break in the program installed so when I'm done with that manual part of the process it will ask me if I'm satisfied with my choices and waits for my approval to run the code.


It's just so cool. I've had a few people who would help me make some scripts for certain things based off of my requirements, and I had this one guy on a forum who wrote some excellent Linux code for me, maybe around 2017 or so. He was so helpful but one day he just sort of got bored of it or just didn't feel like doing it anymore and wished me luck and that was it. Basically been on my own with coding ever since.

But now I've got something that will behave like a human posting in a chat box with me that is more than happy to tweak the hell out of this code whenever I feel like it, 24/7. Heh... I even find myself thanking it, and telling it that I need to take a break or go to bed. I have to be careful with that stuff because once I told it that it was about time for bed but I kept pressing on for a while longer it would keep telling me that I should really let it go for tonight and we'll pick it up tomorrow after I got a good night's sleep.

Sorry to hear that, Sigs. That's a good run though. Some good genes in there. My grandma is the only person in her family to make it to 90 so far. And she smoked until she was in her mid-40's and was overweight. Nobody on my mom's side has ever done it as far as I know, and we've already lost quite a few of my preceding generation on boh sides. I can't even imagine that by the time I'm at the age anybody would be 90 years old that any of them will still be with us.

Oh... I'm under no illusion that's not exactly what happened.

It's why I really didn't want to take the money but I thankfully said no at least 3 times and he insisted.

I've still got some really nice clothes and I can clean up really well when it's necessary, but back during covid I didn't give no shits. And even when I'm dressed nice, you'd still see me getting in and out of whatever POS car I'm driving at the time on top of it.

I finally fixed my pen situation, Brenda. I took HUNDREDS of pens and pencils and markers from my folks when they moved out of state. And they all sat in a big dumb box buried deep inside my curio cabinet bottom under other things and never got used. And any time I needed a pen or pencil I couldn't find one anywhere.



I spent some time there sitting on the ground with all of them and throwing away the half of them that no longer worked, then I threw a bunch more away when I realized they had quite a few really nice pens and mechanical pencils in there. I probably still have 100 pens and pencils, but they're all good, and I know where the backups are (in a MUCH smaller box) when I need them. I got a pen, pencil and sharpie in my junk drawer, on the bedside table of the master bedroom I never use, and I've got about 5 of each in one of my decorative boxes on my curio cabinet, as well as about 50 sharpened pencils in the garage on my workbench.

And I know one day, one way or another, every single one of them is going to end up in my garage or in my basement work room and I'll wonder just how the hell that happened.

Over here I called in crew to trim all the trees and shrubs on the property. It was a huge job bc we have a lot of big tree and a lot of shrubs that needed being cut down to size. I was impressed with the boss. When we did a walk thru and I pointed out all of the things that needed doing he correctly IDd almost of the trees and shrubs, including the feijoa and the coffee trees (!) that I have in pots. The only one he missed on was the oak, which he IDd as a black oak but is really (or was sold to me as) an Island oak. Close enough!

Happy with the job they did. They trimmed A LOT off the trees but they left good structures. Now dear daughter and I need to do the finishing cleanup touches when the weather cools down. And the pines won't be shedding literally binsful of pine needles every week!

Yeah... They do, but in the end I think we all kind of do that. Sometimes we just allow other people into our own orbit for maybe just a little while or maybe for the long haul.

Sometimes you've talked about them (her, specifically, to be honest) and I'd think "what a bitch"... But the more you talk about her, I think she's really got a soft spot for you. But she's not a soft lady, you see... so she doesn't really want to let you know that.





Wow... Chris deBurgh. I know one song by Chris deBurgh. It is the one song that everybody knows by Chris deBurgh. I liked it. It still reminds me of a beautiful young lass who I know wishes she still looked like that, but I always hope looks better than I do in 2026.



You're pulling out the Deep Cuts with that knowledge.

I'm sure they love having conversations like that.



I don't even know who Stompin' Tom Connors is, but I know who sung Edmund Fitzgerald. It's not on my playlist, but If You Could Read My Mind and especially Carefree Highway have been on it since high school when my English Teacher introduced us to a bunch of cool stuff before our time.


I've done that before... Haha!

I rememeber arguing with this girl that the Red Hot Chili Peppers did a song called "Epic". We argued about that all night. But there was no internet back then. No "Google It!". I had to apologize to her and eat crow the next time I saw her after I realized it was a band called "Faith No More".

Whoops!

I also told a girl I worked with at my first job that I didn't listen to Death Metal when she was wearing her Greatful Dead T-Shirt.



The first construction crew I worked with, the head guy there told me all the time "boy... you've really lived a sheltered life".

Annoyed me at the time, but he wasn't wrong.

Well, to tell the truth. I never really got around to any cleaning up except for the dishes. So, I will get to more of it tomorrow.
