Found this article interesting

http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2006/07/02/hersh-iran.html

" Senior United States military commanders have told the Bush administration that military strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities would probably fail to destroy them, the New Yorker magazine reported on Sunday.

The senior commanders also warned that any attack could have "serious economic, political, and military consequences for the United States," the article says, citing unidentified U.S. military officials. "

And the scary part

" The official also says U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his aides "really think they can do this on the cheap, and they underestimate the capability of the adversary."

A recipe for mayhem ?

Here's a link to Mr. Hersh's article.

http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060710fa_fact

Absent Mr. Hersh's bias and the opinions of some un-named sources with unknown political agendas, this looks like the Administation asked for a feasability study on bombing Iran's nuclear facilities, and was told it isn't feasible due to intelligence shortcomings and possible political fallout. Wow.

OK. Here's the lead-in from Mr. Hersh's New Yorker article:
Quote:

On May 31st, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced what appeared to be a major change in U.S. foreign policy. The Bush Administration, she said, would be willing to join Russia, China, and its European allies in direct talks with Iran about its nuclear program. There was a condition, however: the negotiations would not begin until, as the President put it in a June 19th speech at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, “the Iranian regime fully and verifiably suspends its uranium enrichment and reprocessing activities.” Iran, which has insisted on its right to enrich uranium, was being asked to concede the main point of the negotiations before they started. The question was whether the Administration expected the Iranians to agree, or was laying the diplomatic groundwork for future military action.

Sounds pretty ominous, doesn't it? The US administration causing trouble by imposing unrealistic pre-conditions for negotiation, as a leadup to "future military action."

No mention, however, of this.

Quote:

But the Americans, along with Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany _ the six nations that endorsed the package _ insist that Iran suspend its nascent enrichment activities before talks begin.

So it's not just us, it's also Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany who insist that Iran stop enrichment before talks can begin. Wonder if they're all planning "future military action" as well? Or maybe Mr. Hersh's piece reads more to his liking if he leaves this little bit about multi-national agreement on suspending enrichment out. Ya think?
