Right now the US is in 5th place with 2 gold medals.

Canada is around 17th place with 2 bronze medals.

Hopefully this winter games won't be a wash out for Canada.

I dont know if I will watch much of these games For now it seems Norway is winning, I remember reading on Norway per population they have the highest medal counts by any nation while countries like India huge population have very little. India has been trying to win medals since the 1900s and with their Hindu caste system rank the lowest even below nations with much smaller populations such as Georgia a fractured nation which Russia bombed recently, India is below Kazakhstan and North Korea...the Hindu Nationalist country is behind Egypt and Thailand win more medals than India, Uzbekistan and North Korea have won Winter Olympic medals than India, I believe India has never won a medal in the Winter Olympics.

I am wondering though, how much politics may have hurt both the US and Canada in these medal standings, or if they're just showing so low because it's early and it were just events that they weren't very strong in. I would expect Canada to be significantly higher than 17th place, and 5th sounds pretty low for the US as well.

We might not actually be sending our best. They might not have gotten their chance because they didn't check off the right boxes. Plus, with Covid lockdowns, I'm sure that messed up the ability for whatever athletes we are sending there to train for probably a couple of years. I doubt even in the European countries that shut things down that they were actually preventing any of their Olympic hopefuls from training everyday, although I would believe it if I heard that wasn't the case in the US or Canada.

You got a second team to root for if things don't improve for North America, Brenda?

Just looked for the first time.

Canada's in 12 now, and you're beating China who's in 13th. I was surprised to see that Russia isn't even in the top 20, which is as much as Google's going to give me.

Norway is killing it. They are by far the leader of the pack right now. Total medal count for them is 11, which is tied with Italy and 4 more than both Japan and the US. But Norway has 6 golds, which is double 2nd, 3rd and 4th place with only 3. US, Japan and Italy only have 2 golds each. Canada, China and Russia have zero golds. It's possible from what I'm seeing that Russia hasn't even gotten a medal at all.

Were they banned from the Olympics again? I pay so little attention to them that it wouldn't surprise me that they were and I didn't know about it until now. It's a better explanation than Russia not even winning a single bronze by now.

Canada's gotta get a gold, Brenda!

I dont think the Russian flag exists in Sport, it is mostly banned world wide.

The USSR probably was cheating somewhat and probably was good at Drugs, Steroids, Doping etc
Sometimes normally super helathy athletes would just suddenly drop dead from some weird turbo cancer but the whole doping thing was controlled and mostly covered up by smarter doctors, biologists, scientists
I'm sure there were lots of athletes back in the days of the USSR who were honest but there were probably lots who were dishonest, the USA cheated too and so did many many other nations
the women from East German teams often looked like giant dudes on roids

Then the USSR falls in the 90s, in Russia they probably lost a lot of their cheating tech science

btw today there is an illegal invader jihadi rapist mohammedan 'Refugee Olympic Team' not kidding

Russians Bad?
it really started at the end of Bush junior and Obama, the Russians were accused of manipulating their urine samples
I remember a lot of the Russia tennis girls banned, cute but skinny looking blondie Maria Sharapova...I dont think they won anything the so-called doping blondie model girls but the witch hunt had begun

Sir-HE-Hulk Williams the younger sister of Venus who looks like a 'Hulk' was almost without doubt cheating but she was never caught red handed, its not just one player, the doping thing is all over Tennis but it has yet to be exposed
in 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea...they became a villain on the world stage, so now you have another ban war and politics, not just steroids

Why isnt Israel banned like Russia....they call themselves chosen people and are doing all that bombing like other regimes and dictatorships do...maybe its because people dont like jihadis, they turst Arabs the islamists the jihadis even less than Israel...seems as if Belarus is likewise banned because of its support for Russia

None of the USSR records now count as Russia, compared to modern Russia that was a separate Country / State / Union and modern Russia is banned anyways

The Games since the time of the Greeks are supposed to be 'beyond politics' but the are not every once in a while groups of countries start bickering and boycotting, the USA and Soviets had a No. boycotts
Montreal Canada had huge boycotts in the 70s, I think it was African countries that hated Canadians because some indirect link, some team Australia or New Zealand had toured South Africa...because of some vague connection to apartheid policies, it seems so stupid blaming Canada for what other people in South Africa were doing.

a few I think from Communist USSR states boycotted South Korea because Fidel Castro or someone told them they should jointly host the games with 'North Korea'

I believe a few Russians still competed but under a separate flag the Group Russia Sport Russian Olympic Committee Athletes flag...who are basically Russians but not allowed to fly the flag of Russia...because reasons
After the full scale invasion of Ukraine at the Transexual pervert Paris polluted river Summer Olympics I believe Russia and Belarus had zero flags, no group no collection of anything but some people were allowed compete but only as 'Individual Neutral Athletes' so their medal count just fades away into nothing even if they won gold

I dont see Russia's name on the Japan Tokyo Olympics either I think they were banned, the 2020 Summer Olympics were delayed a year until July 2021...a demand for vaccine passports and booster shots

they whole thing cost the Japanese huge money the most costly ever, with a total expenditure of over $20 billion. The Winter Olympic came after and United States went full fucking retard, destroyed its own athlete careers they were already taking a Knee for Floyd and other shit in 2022 and started a boycott of China's Winter Olympics because muslim jihadi islamics are 'special' or some retarded DEI SJW Covid Joe Biden Kamala Harris pro-islamic culture shit...with the USA's head not in the game at the China Winter Olympics I believe the USA got its ass kicked by both Germany and Norway in almost every event

USA beaten by Norway and Germans...but they got to Take-A-Knee for the Floyd rioters and make some dumb speech about lack of muzzie diversity in China

Russia itself is banned from the Olympics because of Ukraine. Their athletes can compete but must call themselves "Individual Neutral Athletes" which means no mentioning of their home country at all. No flags, anthem. Nada. And so far they aren't on the board at all.

I know. Norway is just amazing this time around.

We have got to get a gold. Gotta bring home something outside of last.

Yeah....

America's in (a far behind the leader of the pack) 3rd place, Canada's in 17th place, and China is in 18th place.

So you're still ahead of China at least.

Our politics did this, Brenda. With Covid rules and all the other BS in the last 5 years, we've probably ruined both of our chances of coming out on top for another decade or more at least.

I'm just glad to see that China has fallen off so much too and is going to suffer a brutal beatdown as well, since they are just as responsible for Covid as our own bad leadership was.

It is good see that we are slowly crawling up in the standings.

I think most of the countries there have women hockey teams. I know the Nordic countries do and of course Canada and the US. Not sure about some others.

And today the Canadian women played the US and lost. Only by one goal and it was in overtime. So Canada takes the silver and the US gets gold. But there will be a next time. *evil laugh*

NGL, Brenda... but because my old man was really into the hockey and was actually watching the 3rd period of the game before it went into overtime I kind of was rooting for the US team to win, just to make him happy. For whatever reason he decided to watch Women's Hockey, although he's boycotted the entire Olympics otherwise because of some of the athletes coming out and speaking against America. By the time I got off the phone with him, I had already known that the US tied it up with about 2 minutes left because he got excited all of the sudden. Up to that point, he was kind of ragging on Team USA because they had beaten all of the other teams up to this point something like 31 goals to 7 or something like that. And that included winning against Canada's team in the Round Robin earlier. He said they were choking and were going to lose it in the end.

I hadn't looked into it after that. I didn't know if they won or lost until I saw your post here.

Sorry about that. Maybe next time.

If it's any consolation, my old man is positive the US Mens hockey team is going to get crushed by the Canadian team, so it should be a wash.

I looked up if the men's teams have played yet. And like your dad said they haven't. So we have one more chance to as Hulk says, "Smash" *evil laugh*

Heh...

It's cool talking with my Dad about sports, even though I don't really pay attention much. It's something he really enjoys and enjoys talking about. He hangs out a lot with my youngest half-brother not only because they live a lot closer, but they are both really into things like statistics and really get into the sports. Years ago I kind of blew my dad off when he'd talk sports like I'd blow my grandma or brother off when they started talking religion. Not really a blowoff, but that's when I'd start doing other things while talking to them and only half paying attention. But I find myself remembering a lot of names and stats and things about something I don't even care about just to let him go on about it, and I think he gets a kick out of it when he talks about something the next week and I remember what he was talking about the week before leading up to it.

And then he watches things I wouldn't think he would. I guess he's watched every Women's hockey match, and he hasn't watched a single Mens match. He hasn't watched any Mens hockey since they did what the Basketball team did and allowed professionals to play instead of the previous rules that only amateurs could compete in the Olympics.

So he was really rooting for them to win and the whole phone conversation he kept talking about how they were going to choke on the last match.

So as excited as you were to see that 1 goal they were up the whole time, it had my dad all bummed.

I believe my old man said that the last time the US Mens Hockey team won was back in 1980 when they made that movie with Kurt Russel as the coach. I was a baby.

Yeah... he says that especially after they allowed the Pros to play, Canada just wipes the floor with us in Mens hockey. I didn't even know it, but according to my Dad today most of the players in the NHL are from Canada even though most of the teams are in America. And he said that Canada's team is made up of a lot of players that play for the US teams.

So if you're not working, I wouldn't miss that matchup.

It should look like the scene when Hulk threw Loki all over the room.

I'm glad you were talking to your dad about the hockey. Yeah, talking about things like that can make you remember all kinds of things.

I remember the whole thing with the basketball.

Oh, yeah. The news lady told the sports guy last night that everyone at the station was watching the game and getting all excited. Then when we lost she said, "All the air went out of the room." And I can understand that. You burst our balloon. We held onto that one goal lead for quite a while then you just had to sneak in and ruin our good time. That was so not cool. Then add insult to injury by beating us. Ugh! The ultimate insult.

Well, it is one of the few times we wrap ourselves in the maple leaf and wearing Team Canada shirts. And proudly singing the national anthem.

Had to use my calculator to find out how old I was in 1980. I was 16 and still in high school. Think I might remember that movie. Would have to look it up.

Your dad is right. Most American teams in the NHL have a lot of Canadian players on their rosters. You have to remember Canada only has about 5 professional hockey teams across the whole country now a days.

I'll have to find out when they are playing.

Oh, goody. Revenge for beating our women's team.

Every time you move a step up it seems like they're right behind you. Almost every day I've looked, they were one place behind Canada.

Ya gotta keep China out of the Top 10 and take it from Japan.

Nice!

Looking at the way they do the standings, it's priority by medal type.

Meaning, that if a country had 10 gold medals, but zero silver and bronze, they'd still be right behind the Netherlands and Italy right now, even though Netherlands has 20 medals total and Italy has 30 total. And Netherlands is above Italy even though Italy has 10 more medals, because Netherlands has 7 Silver to Italy's 6 Silver.

Right now, Canada is behind Japan and Austria at 11th place and they all have 5 Gold.

Canada would need 2 more Silver to get ahead of Japan and 3 more Silver to get ahead of Austria, but they only need 1 Gold to get ahead of both of them. You should have that gold for winning against the US team in Hockey this morning.

Unfortunately, that's as high as it gets. I just looked at how many events there are left and with the closing ceremonies scheduled tomorrow, there aren't any individual events left and it looks like there's only Mens hockey, Bobsleigh and Curling finals left, and Canada didn't make the finals for those other two events.

You can't get ahead of Sweden now either, although you'd temporarily be ahead of them if Men's hockey team wins first because you'd be tied for Gold/Silver, but you have 3 more bronze medals than Sweden. But it's Sweden vs. Switzerland for the gold medal in Curling tomorrow too. So whichever team wins the gold doesn't matter. 1 more gold would solidify their rank against Canada, but even if they only got Silver, you'd be tied for Gold medals after the Hockey win, but now Sweden would have one more Silver than Canada with a 2nd place finish in Curling.

Not a bad result for Canada. Been watching them claw their way up from the bottom of the top 20 to finish with 9th place, and helping to keep China out of the Top 10.

And you will end up ahead of Japan too.

Just now realized with a 2nd glance, on the final day of the Olympics, North America and Europe will have shut everyone else in the world out of the top 10.

I noticed that too about the standings.

I know. Our athletes will come home to a rousing welcome to be sure. We often have to claw our way up the standings. That's why I said it is good to be in the double digits a couple of days ago.

What!!!!!

I haven't talked to my Dad yet today. Going to have to see what he thought of the game.

Lots and lots and lots of money in (sadly) legalized phone app gambling today.

Our own NCAA (college basketball) saw 26 athletes arrested for point shaving last month.

I almost wonder...

Sorry about that Brenda... That kept you out of the Top 10 and Japan in the Top 10. :(

My old man missed the win because he went to church, but he watched the game up until the 3rd period tie.

He doesn't believe it was faked, and said it was because of Canada's dominance in the sport, how many Canadians play on US teams and their own pride in their Hockey teams. Not just in the Olympics, but in the NHL in general. My reply to that was "I'm sure at least 80% or 90% of them do have all of that. But nobody is going to convince me that ALL Canadian athletes are just "better people" than US athletes are because they're north of our border. Especially not when most of them play professionally and even live here."

He also went on to say that the US/Canada Hockey teams aren't made up primarily of black people either. And my only reply to that was "Shoeless Joe Jackson wasn't black, was he?" No response.

This is one that will probably never be investigated because neither side would ever have any desire to do so. Trump video called the US team in the locker room immediately after the game was over to congratulate them. Canadian pride in their own official pastime would be shattered if it were ever found out that any Canadian athletes were involved in a point-shaving scheme on behalf of the evil crypto-bookies that are fleecing low-impulse control idiots of their wealth through phone apps.

Also, to add, both the men's and women's Canadian Curling Teams of 2026 have been accused of cheating.

So something else to keep in mind here.

I remember about the gambling scandal in your basketball. It was terrible.

S'okay. My understanding is it was a very tight game like the ladies.

Oh Canadian pride will hurt for a bit. But our hockey athletes will still be welcomed home as good sports who played their hearts out.

Yeah... I'm just a cynic by nature. And I'll bet I'm one of only a few Americans who think shenanigans happened here. We've only gotten gold 3 times in Hockey in history, and the last time we did I was a baby.

Nobody expected the US to win today, and then they did. And this ain't the 1980's and I stopped believing in miracles a long time ago.

And with all the rampant cheating and point shaving going on all over the place because Polymarket is sucking the soul right out of competitive sports, a win like this has me asking real questions that I don't think anybody on either side is ever going to even want to ask.

The US because of Pride, and Canada because of Pride.

I can't be sure that there was any point-shaving going on here.

But all I can say is that it was the Perfect Crime if they did do it.

Because going into it they knew that nobody would ever investigate it.

I've spoken my piece about it and I'm done talking about it. This is so low on my priority list of potential crimes and scams in 2026 that I'm not going to lose any sleep thinking about it when nobody else has any incentive to.
