Once I got my pods, about 6 months or so after I was using the Dexcom G6 sensors, I was forced to go to the 2nd hand market to buy a phone on the (at the time) very small list of compatible phones for the Ominpod insulin system.

Both of these products took the time and money to develop their own transceivers, with the Ominpod's being as large as a standard smartphone, and the Dexcom device coming in at only around roughly half that size.

But neither of these devices, made by different companies, had any cross talk capabilities put into their own EXPENSIVE products. They appear to have said fuck it and just agreed that they don't have to do any of that and they'll rely on their already heavily taxed customers to keep up and upgrade their phones whenever they want to force that issue.

I didn't even realize that Dexcom does this as well until the other day. I got a message saying that sometime this month they're ending service on the phone I otherwise do not need, whicht I paid $90 on ebay for not even 2 years ago. So now my phone is still all good with the extremely picky list that Omnipod had out there 2 years ago, but no longer will be compatible with the Sensors.

So, just in case, I did find the two old devices and got them charged up. I was happy to see that even though they haven't been used in several years they both appear to be working and are able to maintain a charge. I haven't tested any communication with them though because that can lead to disaster and throwing out your current sensor and pod if you screw things up. I'm only going to do this all when and if I know I need to.

I wasn't really sweating it. I figured with a little research and tinkering I could roll back my current app to an older version. I also thought that since I never keep these things online anymore, it still is possible that without a constant network connection monitoring it, the app isn't programmed to stop on its own without the company forcing it to stop on the EOS date. (I was both right and wrong about that, as I discovered by reading the Update notes of the product below. I would have had to roll back to an earlier version no matter what, because the new versions put a legal disclaimer that you can't get around without an online connection, which would also kill the functionality of the app no matter what version I was using).

I found something a lot better than any of those solutions though...

[OC] Build Your Own Dexcom App update- now with G7 support

Quote:

Update Nov 15, 2024

Updated G7 to v1.6.1.4537c. This is the same base version as before but it has a bypass to the legal agreements screen. This bypasses the server side block Dexcom put in place that kept users on older versions of the app from getting past the legal agreements screen in the startup wizard. The is no reason to update if you already have the app installed and past the startup screens.

Update May 4, 2024

Updated G6US base to v1.13.0.2. With this update, Dexcom has fixed the quick glance notification so it is visible in dark mode.

Update Apr. 20, 2024

Couple updates :

Updated G6INT base to v1.12.1.0.

Removed the build option for the G5. If you still use and need the G5 app, let me know and I can reenable it.

Update Dec. 9, 2023

Couple updates for the G6 apps:

Updated G6INT base to v1.12.0.2. This version should be compatible with Android 14 and the workaround is no longer necessary

Updated G6US base to v1.12.0.1. If you use the quick glance notification and dark mode on Android I would skip this version as they have made the notification hard to read in dark mode.

Update Oct. 5, 2023

Couple updates including:

Updated G6 US base to v1.11.2.1.

Fixes around Dropbox issues that caused the outage over the last couple days. The G7 build was moved to AndroidFileHost instead of Dropbox to reduce bandwidth. I've implemented a storage solution with Google Drive. It is not currently enabled but I will be able to switch to it if Dropbox ever stops working again.

Update July 31, 2023

Have a couple of important updates to the G7 app. This update does not include updating the base version to v1.7. Dexcom has added more blocks to prevent modification to the app that I am still working through. Updates to G7 v1.6.1.4537b include:

A bug with the one of the layers of the device compatibility modification has been fixed. There are two layers to it and one of them was not working in this and the last version of the BYOD G7 app. This should prevent Dexcom from remotely disabling your app when they decide v1.6 is obsolete.

Disable the country of residence check. Dexcom has added geo-fencing to prevent you from setting up the app in a country that is different from the country on your Dexcom account. This has left some people stranded without being able to login to the app and use their Dexcom when traveling. This restriction has been removed.

Update June 3, 2023

Update G7 to v1.6.1.4537

Update Dexcom ONE to v1.5.0.1619

Update May 17, 2023

Update G6 US version to 1.11.0.1. This version requires Android 10 or newer.

Added legacy version G6 US for Android 9

Update Apr. 13, 2023

Released a few updates I have been working on. Changes include:

Update G6 INT version to 1.11.07. This update has nice improvements including a better quick glance notification. This version requires Android 10. I have added legacy mg/dl and mmol/L Android 9 versions to the form.

Update G7 version to 1.5.1.4147

Modified G7 app to remove the rooted device warnings

Added options for legacy G7 versions v1.4.0.3906 and v1.3.3.3527

Update Feb. 21, 2023

Update on the G7 side. Its a big update and there were some additional hurdles in place to try to prevent modifications. With a bunch of hours and a bit of luck I was able to get around them. Changes include:

Update G7 version to 1.4.0.3906

This update allows US accounts to login

This update has battery life improvements

Modified it to allow screenshots of the app

Update Jan. 29, 2023

Small Update. Changes Include:

Update base ONE version to v1.4.0.1238.

Made an additional change to ONE to help keep your real device hidden from Dexcom. It will report as a Pixel 4a 5G.

Moved the rest of the AndroidFileHost links for G6 builds for old Android versions to Dropbox.

Update Nov. 5, 2022

Made a couple updates to BYOD today. Changes include:

Update base G7 version to v1.3.3.3527

Made an additional change to G7 to help keep your real device hidden from Dexcom. It will report as a Pixel 5.

Moved G7, ONE, Glucose Program download links to Dropbox instead of AndroidFileHost. AndroidFileHost is currently down, but I am hoping it will come back up. There are still a few more apks for older G6 Android versions on there that I don't have easy backups for.

This is great.

Big thanks to Shabado8 for putting this together and sharing it with everyone.

And Fuck You, Dexcom.

Now I have to see if there is a similar app for the pods. Until this expiration date issue, I've never had a single problem with the Dexcom app and how it operates. The Omnipod app is pure crap though. They've got training wheels welded on that app so hard you have zero control over anything. The worst is the insistence of it to override your phone silent settings for things like "loss of transmitter signal".

That's bad enough when you already have sleeping issues and this thing starts screaming at you full blast in the middle of the night to let you know that the connection temporarily dropped, which isn't a rare occurrence. If you're out in public when it happens though, IT'S LOUD.

I'm also a fan of "gambits" and would love to have an app that allowed me to program in a bunch of IF/OR statements and really have control over how the automation aspect operates, instead of leaving it up to the idiot automation one-size-fits-all they have hard-coded into it, or putting it completely in Manual Mode and being forced to babysit it all day on my own.

If I find a similar solution to the Omnipod system application, I will post it here as well.
