An asteroid about half the size of a football field will zoom past Earth on Feb. 15, closer than the man-made satellites that power GPS, says NASA.

“This is a record-setting close approach,” Don Yeomans of NASA’s Near Earth Object Program at JPL said in a video released by NASA this week. Yeomans, however, emphasized that the asteroid, designated 2012DA14, won’t hit Earth.

“It will come interestingly close, closer than many man-made satellites,” he said.

2012DA14 will thread the gap between low earth orbit, where the International Space Station and many earth observation satellites are located and the higher belt of geosynchronous satellites, which provide weather data and telecommunications.

Probably only if it enters the atmosphere, or if anything might volatilize off the surface from solar radiation.

That could be real cool.

One of my most vivid memories was of my old man driving my brothers out to the corn fields and being out there just watching fire falling from the sky for about a half hour. Don't know how big a story that was at the time or even what year it would have been. If I had to guess, it was maybe 1986.

If it was 1986, had to be the Perseid Shower...

https://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1986JRASC..80L..91B

There was also the Orionid meteor shower, but that would have been too late in the year. August sounds about right.

I guess the Perseid happens every year. I think I was right about 1986 though, because even though it sounds like 1980 was the biggest there had been in a long while, the only other year I see get a specific mention in the 80's is 86.

I think I'm probably also suffering from a case of misremembering things and making them more magical in my head than they were in real life. Looks like on your average year it peaks at about 50-55 meteors per hour. In my head, I've built that up to an actual shower with at least 50 of them simultaneously at every moment.

To be fair though, if it were just a normal event, my old man wouldn't have driven us out there to see it. He was always interested in space and to this day he drives to the best place to see an eclipse and will even bunk at a hotel overnight when he does it. I'm sure he had heard on the news that something big was happening around the south side of Lake Michigan that night, so it must have been a bigger spectacle than usual for some reason or another. We never did it again, and I had no clue until just now that this was a yearly thing.
