This must have been some pretty big news, because I was out with friends and their families yesterday and two of them knew about this and actually brought it up. I've actively followed speedrunning for years, so this was the first time I'd ever heard anybody I personally knew bringing anything like this up.

I'd love to pull up the "joke" video I posted here years ago where an AI program obliterated Tetris, but I really have no idea where that post would have went. As amazing as just watching a program play Tetris was at the time, this kid just outplayed the AI just a few short years later.

Congrats, kid. You just got yourself 1.7 Million YT views in 6 days too. Well deserved.

Huh!

So, having played Tetris a little ... who hasn't? ...

Wow.

I noticed he had a strategy in the beginning of the game, to reserve a space to the right for the column pieces, and he let the stack build up a lot higher than I would be comfortable with.

But at the end of the game he was a lot more careful to keep that stack whacked down.

The piece colors would have strained my eyes. Dark on dark??? NOT FAIR.

Do his mom and dad know what he's doing when he's supposed to be doing homework?

This was a peak moment in his short life, not likely to be repeated. I hope he doesn't get fixated on it!

What's he going to follow that with?

I'm confused, it looked like there was a finale programmed in, but when I skipped to the end there didn't seem to be one. If there was a finale, im surprised someone would program one into a presumably unbeatable game.

Congrats, kid!

LOL yeah...

That's way beyond what the developers intended. The game was pretty old so there wasn't a huge amount of fanfare when you "beat" the game they way that you were supposed to. You'd get certain animations for hitting thresholds like a little rocket ship taking off, or even cameos from big Nintendo characters of the era.

These runners have been far beyond that for a long time, especially a few years back when that other kid developed that "rolling" technique that requires you to hold the controller upside down.

Using a system called TAS, people knew about this kill screen for a pretty long time, but until recently nobody ever thought a human could make it actually happen. ("Kill screens", if you didn't see the explanation in the video are software limitations of the time, usually due to how the very small amount of memory was utilized. Quite a few old games are well known for having them, such as level 256 in the Pac-Man arcade game where half of the screen is garbled and even though there are still dots to collect on the garbled side of the screen there are not enough dots to progress to level 257 so once you've gotten there and collected all the dots there's nothing left to do in the game but die until you game over).

Now that a human actually managed to do this, the next level is going to be to try to get to the actual end-game kill screen, and until then the new records that happen along the way are going to be how close they can actually get to it before losing.

This kid was just the first human being to ever make the glitch happen, but he did it at one of the earliest points possible. The video explains that once you get to right around where he was when it happened, there are certain events that will trigger it, like clearing 3 lines on Level "X". So it's possible if you memorize the tables that have been figured out that you could get quite a bit further into the game and get an even higher score by not triggering the glitch. But eventually there is a point in the game that no matter what you do it will glitch.

Nobody is going to say that a human can't do this because every time people said that about a barrier eventually somebody does manage to do it. But it could be years and years before this last barrier gets beaten.
