James Buchanan (1857-1861) is next on the list for letting US Congressmen, while they are still in Congress, publicly organize the Confederacy. Buchanan did nothing about that. Why Google?

For the same reason that I don't have a VPN. I'm smart enough not to let idiots like Ted or Second figure out who I am and to prevent hackers from stealing my personal info, but nothing you ever going to do is going to hide your traffic from the Government who has the keys to all the backdoors and knows exactly what you do online. There is no such thing as online anonymity.

And for 95% of my searches, Google IS THE BEST. I only use alternative search sites to find things when I'm trying to find something politically related and Google is hiding what I'm looking for.

I'd also argue that if you don't use Google for your searches (just like I'd argue that if you use a VPN to "hide" your activity) that all you're doing is painting a big bullseye on your back. The bullseye only gets bigger the lesser known the alternative search engines are. For all we know, Startpage and Qwant are government run programs, or funded by George Soros.
