I grew up with youngsters who were Confederacy sympathizers angry about the Civil War (some of them graduated from Robert E Lee High School in Baytown, Texas. Most left Lee without a diploma.) and even angrier against the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Movement. They never forgave the Yankees for having values sympathetic toward Blacks. When they were full-grown, they became Trump voters, as is 6ixStringJack.

We need to forgive one another for what we did and said when we were in the dark about COVID.

In April 2020, with nothing else to do, my family took an enormous number of hikes. We all wore cloth masks that I had made myself. We had a family hand signal, which the person in the front would use if someone was approaching on the trail and we needed to put on our masks. Once, when another child got too close to my then-4-year-old son on a bridge, he yelled at her “SOCIAL DISTANCING!”

These precautions were totally misguided. In April 2020, no one got the coronavirus from passing someone else hiking. Outdoor transmission was vanishingly rare. Our cloth masks made out of old bandanas wouldn’t have done anything, anyway. But the thing is: We didn’t know.

I have been reflecting on this lack of knowledge thanks to a class I’m co-teaching at Brown University on COVID. We’ve spent several lectures reliving the first year of the pandemic, discussing the many important choices we had to make under conditions of tremendous uncertainty.

Some of these choices turned out better than others. To take an example close to my own work, there is an emerging (if not universal) consensus that schools in the U.S. were closed for too long: The health risks of in-school spread were relatively low, whereas the costs to students’ well-being and educational progress were high. The latest figures on learning loss are alarming. But in spring and summer 2020, we had only glimmers of information. Reasonable people—people who cared about children and teachers—advocated on both sides of the reopening debate.

Another example: When the vaccines came out, we lacked definitive data on the relative efficacies of the Johnson & Johnson shot versus the mRNA options from Pfizer and Moderna. The mRNA vaccines have won out. But at the time, many people in public health were either neutral or expressed a J&J preference. This misstep wasn’t nefarious. It was the result of uncertainty.

Obviously some people intended to mislead and made wildly irresponsible claims. Remember when the public-health community had to spend a lot of time and resources urging Americans not to inject themselves with bleach? That was bad. Misinformation was, and remains, a huge problem. But most errors were made by people who were working in earnest for the good of society.

Given the amount of uncertainty, almost every position was taken on every topic. And on every topic, someone was eventually proved right, and someone else was proved wrong. In some instances, the right people were right for the wrong reasons. In other instances, they had a prescient understanding of the available information.

The people who got it right, for whatever reason, may want to gloat. Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts. All of this gloating and defensiveness continues to gobble up a lot of social energy and to drive the culture wars, especially on the internet. These discussions are heated, unpleasant and, ultimately, unproductive. In the face of so much uncertainty, getting something right had a hefty element of luck. And, similarly, getting something wrong wasn’t a moral failing. Treating pandemic choices as a scorecard on which some people racked up more points than others is preventing us from moving forward.

We have to put these fights aside and declare a pandemic amnesty. We can leave out the willful purveyors of actual misinformation while forgiving the hard calls that people had no choice but to make with imperfect knowledge. Los Angeles County closed its beaches in summer 2020. Ex post facto, this makes no more sense than my family’s masked hiking trips. But we need to learn from our mistakes and then let them go. We need to forgive the attacks, too. Because I thought schools should reopen and argued that kids as a group were not at high risk, I was called a “teacher killer” and a “génocidaire.” It wasn’t pleasant, but feelings were high. And I certainly don’t need to dissect and rehash that time for the rest of my days.

Moving on is crucial now, because the pandemic created many problems that we still need to solve.

Student test scores have shown historic declines, more so in math than in reading, and more so for students who were disadvantaged at the start. We need to collect data, experiment, and invest. Is high-dosage tutoring more or less cost-effective than extended school years? Why have some states recovered faster than others? We should focus on questions like these, because answering them is how we will help our children recover.

Many people have neglected their health care over the past several years. Notably, routine vaccination rates for children (for measles, pertussis, etc.) are way down. Rather than debating the role that messaging about COVID vaccines had in this decline, we need to put all our energy into bringing these rates back up. Pediatricians and public-health officials will need to work together on community outreach, and politicians will need to consider school mandates.

The standard saying is that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. But dwelling on the mistakes of history can lead to a repetitive doom loop as well. Let’s acknowledge that we made complicated choices in the face of deep uncertainty, and then try to work together to build back and move forward.

With just A LITTLE knowledge, it was possible to "get this right".

I "got it right", and as a result our family made it through the worst first two waves without getting sick and before there was ever a vaccine.

It was VERY clear, early on, that this was a disease that felled the old, those out of shape, and the immunocompromised and not most people under 45. That it ran like wildfire through eldercare facilities.

A few months into the pandemic it was clear that it did NOT spread by fomites but could be carried by even smaller particles. At about the same time it became clear that heat and dry air deactivated the virus pretty quickly.

The only answer to an airborne disease like this was a properly-fitting N95 mask, and the at-risk population was pretty well identified.

If I knew that, why didn't our officials? The early information was readily available, even from China, on the internet. It's not like it was some big mystery.

I can understand short-term lockdowns - a month, maybe two- while officials attempt to get a grip on the nature of the virus: how it spread, who was vulnerable, how to test for it, how to stop it, what kind of treatment was required. (As it turns out, there was no readily-identifiable treatment so doctors and nurses just did the best they could.)

But clearly one reliable measure was N95s, and ensuring sufficient N95s for all medical and eldercare and emergency professionals would have gone a long, long way to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The average person - what they thought, what they did, what they said - is not to blame. It's officials who are to blame. If they had started out with a clear message and then used the power of their office(s) to ensure sufficient N5s for everyone who needed them ... and then everyone who wanted them... clearly identifying those most at-risk, and moved policy to protect them ... maybe set up food deliveries for older people living at home so they wouldn't need to go shopping (for example) and virtual church attendance, and putting out warnings at facilities/events where people are indoors together and breathing hard, singing or shouting (gyms, choirs, indoor concerts) we might have come through this with fewer dead and greater trust in our officials, and not be thinking of them as either gummint controlfreaks or rightwing stumblebums. If not downright malicious conspirators.

Somebody I went to grade school with just died this week.

I haven't seen him since I was 12 years old and moved out of town, but one of my buddies who I recently started hanging out with again after about a decade remained friends with him over the years.

He was 44. Married with 3 kids. He was in great shape and regularly worked out.

My buddy dug into his social media and saw a post in Summer of 2021 where he said that he got the jab because he was going to be fired if he didnt.

He died of a heart attack.

FUCK YOUR AMNESTY.

I've had this discussion many times with someone here, I forget her username,she was pathologically afraid of having her children vaccinated. She even ran off to Argentina with them, IIRC.

Most diseases have much higher complication rates than their respective vaccines. It's a risk/risk evaluation.

Sometimes it's a deactivated whole pathogen sometimes it's a chopped-up portion (like the acellular whooping cough vaccine), sometimes it's an actual live but diluted pathogen. Some technologies are less risky than others, look at the various polio vaccine complication rates.

It's the risk of doing as something v the risk of doing nothing. So, your risk from a disease v risk from vaccine goes like this:.

Disease risk = risk of exposure * risk of serious complication rate

Vaccine risk = 1 * risk of serious complication rate

I was never a big fan of the HPV vaccine. There seemed to be serious complications, against the risk of exposure (currently about 40%, but which can be controlled by the person involved) times the risk of serious disease (which, for some women is the risk of developing cervical cancer, itself which can be detected early and cured. The current death rate from cervical cancer is 0.2%. There is NO risk, AFAIK, to men.) So the risk from the disease (HPV) is easily controlled for women and zero for men. But the risk from the vaccine is.....!

It sounded to me like a money-making scheme.

I'm not in favor of all vaccines. Our daughter never had the pertussis vaccine bc at the time the neurological complication rate was too high.

It's not a vaccine.

Vaccines prevent you from getting a disease or spreading it. Covid "vaccines" do neither, and it seems that the more boosted you get the more Covid you get.

Yanno SIX, once upon a time when I was at work late and my boss's boss' b oss raced down to my cubicle, eyes wild and spittle flying, needing a sampling bulb prepared right away becuse it was AN EMERGENCY, all I could think was... "Is this a 911 call? Because if it's not, it's not an emergency"

By then I had legitimately faced medical crises and called 911 close to a half-dozen times for family and friends. Daughter arresting after birth, multiple ties. Daughter in nonstop seizure. Mother in law with a stroke. Mother in law with pulmonary edema. Coworker in a diabetic crisis. Coworker with possible heart attack.

We experimented on our child with a dozen anticonvulsants and a few experimental treatments. I was at my mother-in-law's bedside when she died of cancer, and my mother's when she died of COPD and at my dad's hospital bed with terminal Parkinson's.

Hubby had cancer. I had cancer (and for all I know, still do).

At my age, and with all of the potentially fatal and fatal events and diseases that my family has lived thru, I don"t think I'm terrified of anything medical except something that is diagnosibly terrifying. And even then, I'm not sure I'd be terrified bc I'm too busy analyzing and thinking what to do next. (BTW I'm a pretty good diagnostician.)

I try not to waste my energies being terrified of maybes. You can scare yourself silly bunny-trailing your way thru increasingly improbable causal chains until you wind up with a truly terrifying (but near-impossible ) result. Even nuclear war... we joke rather sourly, hubby and I, that at least we wouldn't have to worry about daughter's future.

Yeah. My family did, but they're not a wife and daughter or son. Aside from my niece, they were all grown ass adults that decided they'd put their lives in the hands of somebody else who has been known to chronically lie to them all of their lives.

And now, we're forever different. I'm pureblood while every single member of my family save for one cousin is not.

I should start getting minority status benefits.

We'll see how this all pans out 10 years from now. We don't even have a clue what this thing is going to do to people.

Now, I did read that article about those abnormal clots found in some people by morticians. The analysis says they aren't BLOOD clots. There is a conxition where anibodies and antigens form long polymer-like chains. that inflame and clog up blood vessels, leading to various "itis" of blood vessels. When its dxd it's treatable with plasmapheresis.

And you dont have a clue what COVID is going to do to people, either, but I don't see you stressing about that. You're kind of in denial about one and hyperworried about the other. I mean, you're more worried about a vaccine that was manufactured than the virus that was manufactured?

Anyway, I NEVER believe that ANY medicine is safe and effective. Give me some cedit! You think I haven't evaluated medical risk before? Especially when trying some experimental therapy on our child?

Dood, I've been down this road more times than i i can remember. It's a risk/risk calculation, innit? That implies that there's risk no matter what you choose.

We have a lot more to worry about with dear daughter than some improbable problem in the distant future. Earthquakes, inflation, and general societal breakdown are in the card s than a vaccine. In any case, it looks like scientists are bird-dogging the problem and are more likely to come up with an answer for that than for any of the other problems that I mentioned.

Well not a new tablet. An old tablet that used to have a detachable keyboard, but the contacts to the keyboard wore down n didn't make contact anymore, so rather than getting a whole new tablet decided to try and use it in this mode. I hate it, but ill have to get used to it.

Anyway, i was going to add that the scariest thing is the unknown. Here's one medical thing that had me wigged out: we were trying experimental/off-label treatments for dear daughter including steroids, ketogenic diet, and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). During her IVIG treatment, mad cow disease was dxd in Britiain. And mad cow disease could, as it turned out, be transmitted through blood tranfusions. And IVIG is a pooled blood product, sometimes as many as 25,000 people pooled in one batch. And there is a fair bit of travel from USA to the UK. At the time, it wasn't known how many particles of prion protein were required to transmit the disease (I think it's still not known.) And there are no known ways to inactivate the prion protein or purify out of bloox products, and there's a really long incubation period - 15 years sometimes- so tell me, out of 25,000 people, what were the chances that ONE of them had mad cow disese circulating in their system? Don't know? Me neither.

One of my coworkers had ear piercings about the time that AIDS came to be diagnosed. By then they knew it was a virus, but nobody knew how easily it might spread. By kissing? Toilet seats? Ear piercings?

Someone on this board was wigged out by Saddam WMD. He could think of all kinds of (improbable) ways by which Saddam could have evaded detection, and since no investigation can ever prove a negative (absence of evidence is not evidence of absence) he gve himself a good case of anxiety over the issue that lasted at least 4 years after the war was over.

And then there is THUGR and JO who genuinely believe that Trump was somehow colluding with Putin and that Putin will (somehow) destroy the USA.

The antidote to all of these is to stop dealing in hypotheticals and start dealing with real world knowledge, where such knowledge is possible. People have to ask themsevles HOW. HOW could such a thing happen? Nothing happens by magic. There is always a mechanism, and it's not unknowable. So, what does one need to know, with reasonable certainty, whether something is, or is not, a problem? If the info is available, seek it out. If the information isn't currently available, when will, it become available? If there is a problem, what can you do about it? And in the absence of reliable information, take what measures you can and then put it out of your mind until reliable information becomes available.

Gnawing on an unresolvable fear drives people nuts. It's happened to me and to pepple I know. Refusing information about a potential problem is even stupider bc it keeps people in a state of panic far longer than they need to be.

I don't have a problem with science. I have a problem with the people running science. That institution has been invaded and co-opted by college "educated" Marxists just like every other institution.

More people who were vaccinated have now died of covid than people who weren't vaccinated. Granted, there are a lot more people vaccinated than unvaccinated after the terror campaign from our world governments for 2 years and the high number of countries that forced mandates.

At the very best, you're not lowering your chances of dying from Covid at all by getting vaccinated. Worst case... We'll see what happens. I'm really interested in seeing how babies that were born from vaccinated parents end up turning out.

If they end up being "mules" that are capable of working but not capable of having children of their own, we're not going to know that for the better part of two decades.

But hey... I guess the bright side of that would be one less issue to control the minds of the single-issue idiot electorate.

Its hard to inject "Marxism" into science bc political economics isn't science's subject matter. In the USA almost a hundred million got the bad version of Covid and about 260 million got vaccinated. In the grand scheme of things, weird things are happening to people all the time and there's a high likelihood that out of that many people, some are going to get sick with an unrelated illness. A strange illness, even.

My heart, for example, started skipping beats BEFORE Covid. I developed cancer BEFORE Covid, even tho I was dxd afterwards. ( I had a 5-year history with that tumor site.) If I was in a fearful state of mind, I would attribute it to "the jab" but thats simply not the case.

You have to use statistics. And even with a clear correlation between one thing and the other, in medicine you have to show a MECHANISM for HOW this thing is supposed to work. For example, there is a definite correlation between myocarditis in young men and the jab. But its still a very small number who get it. So, why men but not women? Why some men but not all men, or even most men? (BTW I supervised someone at work who had myocarditis. This was years b4 Covid and all the Drs could, say was that he prolly had some mild flu that he didn't even notice, and that was the likely cause.)

Once they know HOW it works, they can presumably limit the damge or at least predict who is at risk.

Anyway, more light and less heat needs to be brought to the topic, as it needs to be brought to most topics, bc panicked people make very poor decisions.

Every vaccine and medication has side effects. One of the kids in daughter's class was brain-burned from the pertussis vaccine, and she wasn't the only one I know of. Same thing with the polio vaccine, the measles vaccine, the HPV vaccine etc etc. It was only after a decade of use that "they" discovered that they had been co-incubating simian virus 40 along with the polio virus, and decades of people had been injected with SV40.
