Someone here thinks that because I said TWO is always on the righteous side of an issue, I always agree with his solution to dealing with those on the wrong side of the issue. It does not.

A simple example. Being nice to others is the right side of an issue. Killing those who are not is not an acceptable solution in making sure everyone is. Holy shit, figure it out dummy.

Perhaps I should not have watched the movie Dredd (2012) twice.

Is it okay for a Ukrainian to murder Putin rather than hope for him to change his mind and sign a peace treaty? Before making the moral choice about what you'd do, the one that makes you feel good about yourself, you might want to read the List of assassination attempts on Adolf Hitler. The first one was in 1932, but each failed because the assassins were seeking high praise, a long life for themselves, and maybe a movie or a lucrative book deal rather than concentrating on the task in front of them -- killing a supervillain.

Hitler

Ukraine doesn't have moral qualms about killing Russian generals. I suspect there are Ukrainians who don't have too many about firing a RPG into Putin's office and killing him in cold blood. That coldness wouldn't get praised in most corners of the world. Most would want Putin captured humanely and moved to The Hague for a war crimes trial, which would take many years to conclude, much like Slobodan Milosevic's. Fantasy thinking such as that is why Hitler ruled for decades, as will Putin.

Russian Officer Complains About Dead General and Comms Meltdown in Intercepted Call

Ukraine says it intercepted a call between two FSB officers discussing the death of a top general and the failure of its encrypted comms system.

The Ukrainian defence ministry has released audio from a call which it claims captured two Russian officers lamenting the death of a top general and the collapse of its secure communications network in Ukraine.

In the call—which has been verified by Bellingcat, the fact-checking group known for exposing Kremlin misinformation—two purported Russian FSB officers are heard discussing the death of a general killed in fighting near Kharkiv, which has been hammered by shelling this month.

Ukraine’s defence ministry named the general as Vitaly Gerasimov, chief of staff of the 41st Army, and Bellingcat reported that it had confirmed the death with Russian sources. In its statement, Ukraine’s defense intelligence agency said Gerasimov had been “liquidated” alongside “a number of senior Russian army officers” in fighting near Kharkiv.

If Gerasimov’s death is confirmed, he would be the second Russian general to be killed in Ukraine within a week following the death of the 41st Army’s deputy commander, Andrei Sukhovetsky. A pro-Putin Chechnyan general, Magomed Tushayev, was also reported to have been killed.

Russia’s failure to protect its top-ranking officers backs up reports from Ukraine that the Kremlin’s invasion force is in disarray.

I was certain someone would write the editorial making the connection I see. Randal Balmer did:

My Turn: Putin, the bear, and the book of Revelation
By RANDALL BALMER, For the Monitor

Published: 3/6/2022 8:00:46 AM

Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has made the book of Revelation relevant once again.

The final book of the New Testament, with its apocalyptic visions of multi-headed dragons, plagues, vials of judgment, the Whore of Babylon and the Battle of Armageddon has confounded readers for millennia. Written most likely at the end of the first century by a man known as John the Elder on the island of Patmos, Revelation is presented in the form of a dream.

Generations of believers have puzzled over its meaning, and the general sense is that it was included in the canon of scripture as a source of comfort for early Christians who were undergoing persecution at the hands of Roman authorities, an assurance that God would eventually avenge their sufferings.

That, however, has not stopped many believers in the ensuing centuries from teasing out nuances of meaning from these recondite passages. Evangelicals in particular, who purport to interpret the Bible literally (although they typically engage in selective literalism), have been especially eager to collate biblical passages with current events.

The establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, for example, was understood by evangelicals as a direct fulfillment of biblical prophecies, and a necessary precondition for the rebuilding of the Jewish temple. Evangelicals are forever speculating about the identity of the Antichrist, a charismatic figure and false messiah who leads people astray from the truth. The Antichrist is mentioned in Revelation and is associated with the number 666, the Mark of the Beast.

Beginning with the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, Protestants have frequently designated the pope as Antichrist, but other candidates have surfaced as well in evangelical demonology. John F. Kennedy was a popular target in the 1960s, and more recent speculation has surfaced around Ronald Wilson Reagan (six letters in each of his three names) or Bill Gates (someone with too much time on his hands has declared that if you assign numbers to the ASCII characters in his name you come up with 666).

For a while, Mikhail Gorbachev was a popular candidate, especially with the birthmark on his forehead, thought to be the Mark of the Beast. Back in 1988, I interviewed a nuclear engineer who had written an entire book about Gorbachev, claiming that if you assigned numbers to the letters in Gorbachev’s name, using the Cyrillic alphabet, it tallies 666. The odds against Gorbachev being the Antichrist, he assured me, were 710 quadrillion to one.

I grew up in this world. I listened to countless sermons warning that the “end times” were near and the world was about to collapse in apocalyptic judgment. I remember very clearly my mother summoning me from a neighborhood baseball game in June 1967 and admonishing me to get ready for the return of Jesus because of the Six Day War then unfolding in the Middle East.

My father, like many evangelicals of his generation, was what is called in theological circles a premillennialist, which means that he expected Jesus to return to earth at any moment, gather the faithful and unleash judgment against those who were “left behind.”

In fact, the popular series of books and films by that name was inspired by a 1972 movie called A Thief in the Night, which in turn was based on my father’s Sunday evening sermons on the book of Revelation. The writer and director of that film, which Time magazine called a church-basement classic, was my Sunday school teacher, and my father played the “good” preacher in the movie.

The beauty of premillennialism is its protean nature; it can be adapted endlessly to explain current events. I remember hearing during my childhood, for instance, that the reference in Revelation to a bear was certainly a designation for Russia, but that interpretation fell out of favor with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Thanks to Putin’s imperial designs, the bear is back. And frankly, it’s difficult not to be swept along with apocalyptic premonitions, especially when the Russian leader refers ominously to his nuclear arsenal.

So is Putin the Antichrist? I put that question to Google, and sure enough, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Orthodox had just told the BBC, “Putin is really not messiah, but really anti-Christ of our current time.”

What about other candidates, especially someone known for bending the truth (what the Bible calls bearing false witness), one of the criteria for the Antichrist? Could Donald Trump be the Antichrist? Once again, the internet quivers with speculation. “I am the chosen one,” Trump declared in 2019. Hmm.

As for charisma, I confess that neither Putin nor Trump does it for me. But David Jeremiah, pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church and one of Trump’s evangelical acolytes, said about the former president, “The combination of his magnetic personality, speaking ability, and extreme good looks will make him virtually irresistible to the masses.”

Apparently, 81% of white evangelicals thought so in 2016, and a comparable number four years later.

I’m content to let Putin and Trump duke it out for the title of Antichrist. Both are reprehensible and morally bankrupt, and both have repeatedly demonstrated their contempt for democracy. But it’s probably worth remembering in these troubled times that Trump was Putin’s chosen candidate and that Trump’s first impeachment centered around his refusal to provide arms to Ukraine.

Let’s hope — pray — that an apocalypse can be avoided.

(Randall Balmer teaches at Dartmouth College and is the author of more than a dozen books, including Evangelicalism in America.)

The Only Russian Official Angrier Than Putin at How Things Are Going in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was blunt from the start about his lack of expectations for these talks. Choosing Vladimir Medinsky to lead this delegation was a clear signal that Putin is not serious about reaching a negotiated peace. But sending Medinsky also sends an additional, very specific message: that Putin is doubling down on his inaccurate historical justification for this war, a narrative that claims Ukraine has no right to exist within its internationally recognized borders.

Who is this Medinsky?

Medinsky has advertised his casual relationship with the truth as a feature, not a liability, of his historiographical approach. One telling example is his response to the controversy over the historical inaccuracy of the 2016 blockbuster film Panfilov’s 28 Men. The Soviet government knew by 1948 that the story of 28 soldiers defending Moscow from dozens of German tanks in World War II did not, as they put it, “correspond to reality.” But the tale remains a popular narrative in Russia to this day. In 2015, Medinsky lambasted the head of the Russian State Archive for declassifying and publishing documents online that confirmed the story had indeed been exaggerated for propaganda purposes. Medinsky insists that Panfilov’s 28 Men, which his ministry helped to fund, should be applauded for its perpetuation of that mythicized episode, in which Soviet Gen. Ivan Panfilov and his 28 men died only after (supposedly) taking 18 tanks with them. “My fundamental conviction,” Medinsky said, “is that even if this story is completely made up from beginning to end, even if there was no Panfilov, even if there was nothing—this is a sacred legend that you just can’t touch. And anyone who does is wretched scum.”

The day after making that statement, Medinsky published an article in the state press defending the Panfilov myth’s historical accuracy. The Kremlin chimed in as well, with Putin’s press secretary lauding Medinsky for using “strong words to defend historical truth.” To cap off the episode, the film was awarded a prize for being “faithful to historical truth”—by Medinsky’s own Russian Military Historical Society.

Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, the Russian government has become only more persistent in its quest to establish a specific historical truth highly favorable to Russian nationalism.

Russia has no more appropriate ambassador for gross distortion of history than Vladimir Medinsky. The fact that he is lead negotiator is itself an aggressive sign of escalation.

Putin is a supervillain because he threatened to nuke the world if any nation opposes him in Ukraine.

6ix, you seem to misunderstand the concept of a "Supervillain". In the James Bond movies, the Supervillains die, as do their minions and henchmen. Same happens in Firefly episodes and the movie Serenity.

6ix, I noticed that you identified your afflictions with Arthur Fleck's afflictions in the movie Joker (2019). Both 6ix and Fleck feel that the world is unkind to them, that they are oppressed by tyrants, that their uniqueness is unrewarded.

6ix fights back against the world by voting for Trump while Fleck fights back by murdered a dozen people, including his mother, but he didn't go on trial. In the final scene in the movie, he murdered his female therapist, making him the Supervillain, not someone that 6ix should have sympathy for and wish for a long life.

6ix, a reminder of Putin's Supervillain status:

At the beginning of the Ukraine invasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his country’s nuclear forces to be placed on high alert and ominously threatened Russia’s adversaries with “consequences you have never seen in history.” By doing so, he added a frightening nuclear dimension to his unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine . . .

Despite Putin's previous denials, Russia's Ministry of Defense has confirmed that Russian military conscripts have been involved in the invasion of Ukraine and that some were taken prisoner by Ukrainian forces, just a day after President Vladimir Putin insisted conscripts were not part of the assault.

The ministry admitted that conscripts were "discovered" in Ukraine but claimed they have already been withdrawn and returned to Russia.

"Unfortunately, several facts of the presence of conscripts in the units of the Russian armed forces involved in the conduct of a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine were discovered," defense ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said in a video message.

A day earlier, in an International Women's Day address, Putin had reassured soldiers' mothers and wives that Russian conscripts are not taking part in his invasion of Ukraine, which he has referred to as a "special military operation." "I understand how you're worrying for your beloved ones ... I emphasize that conscript soldiers are not participating in hostilities and will not participate in them," Putin said, reported Reuters. "And there will be no additional call-up of reservists."

The Russian president stated that only "professional military personnel" were involved in the invasion. He also said on March 5 that there were no plans to enlist conscripts to fight in the war in Ukraine.

Konashenkov claimed Wednesday that Russian conscripts have been returned to Russia. "Almost all such servicemen have already been withdrawn to the territory of Russia," he said.

But he added that some conscripts have been captured by Ukrainian forces. "At the same time, a sabotage group of the national battalion attacked one of the units performing the tasks of logistical support. A number of servicemen, including conscripts, were captured," Konashenkov said.

"At present, comprehensive measures are being taken to prevent the deployment of conscripts to combat areas and the release of captured servicemen," he said.

Back in 1983, Ronald Reagan labeled the Soviet Union an "evil empire" during remarks before evangelical Christians in Florida. The president was warning about a buildup of Soviet strength and global menace, and the need to confront it.

History is now repeating itself. Today's Russia is a pale version of the communist regime that finally dissolved in 1991. But Russian President Vladimir Putin, famously embittered by that collapse, is bent on reacquiring some of that former glory.

Putin's Make Russia Great Again strategy is a font of international mayhem.
Russia invaded neighboring Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014, where fighting rages on and 10,000 have died. Its illegal annexation of Crimea was the first effort to alter European borders by force since World War II. The Russian military, dispatched to Syria, shored up the regime of Bashar Assad and committed atrocities, bombing a United Nations aid convoy and targeting hospitals.

High-confidence findings by the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency concluded that Putin ordered a cyber and propaganda attack to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election and undermine public faith in the American democratic process. Russian "trolls" posted false stories on Facebook that reached 140 million Americans, and Russian hackers stole thousands of emails from Democratic leaders and leaked them. Similar attacks have since occurred in Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Other Russian aggression includes selling weapons to the Taliban in Afghanistan and oil to North Korea. The Kremlin also provides sanctuary to a rogue's gallery of cyber criminals, dispatches fighter aircraft that harass U.S. military jets in Syria and NATO aircraft over the Baltic, and sends submarines to prowl suspiciously close to crucial Atlantic undersea cables carrying 97% of global communications. All the while, Putin works to rig upcoming Russian elections in his favor.

The Trump administration's response to this mounting threat has been schizophrenic. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson writes in The New York Times that the Trump administration has "no illusions" about a resurgent Russia. And a suddenly tougher line emerged last month with the welcome announcement that anti-tank weapons would be sold to the Ukrainian government for defense against Russian-backed rebels.

Even so, these steps run contrary to President Trump's tendency toward appeasing Putin. The administration has slow-walked implementation of tough, new sanctions against Russia passed overwhelmingly by Congress last summer. The sanctions are to finally go into effect this month.

And Trump has not convened a Cabinet-level meeting on Russian interference in the presidential campaign. "When will all the haters and fools out there realize that having a good relationship with Russia is a good thing," Trump tweeted in November.

Reagan famously urged listeners in 1983 "to beware the temptation ... to ignore the facts of history and the aggressive impulses of an evil empire." Thirty-five years later, those words are again worth heeding.

What they're trying to do is to drive a wedge between Germany and Russia, torpedo German competitiveness, and pull everyone back into the NATO fold, and Germany is spineless enough to let them do it.

This is a replay of GWB's "moving goalposts" for Saddam... sanctions will be applied if Russia invades Ukraine... well, if Russia does ANYTHING... oh,no, for troops in it's territory... oh no, for Navalny...

Sanctions are going to be applied no matter what Russia does, or doesn't do. That's the point.

Vladimir Putin Has Fallen Into the Dictator Trap

Reality doesn’t conform to the theory of the rational, calculating despot who can play the long game.

In the span of a couple of weeks, Vladimir Putin—a man recently described by Donald Trump as a strategic “genius”—managed to revitalize NATO, unify a splintered West, turn Ukraine’s little-known president into a global hero, wreck Russia’s economy, and solidify his legacy as a murderous war criminal.

How did he miscalculate so badly?

Ukraine joins European power grid, ending its dependence on Russia

Grid operators had been preparing such a move after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, but the large-scale Russian military assault on Ukraine last month prompted an emergency request by Kyiv to speed up a process that was expected to take years more to complete.

"This step will give Ukraine the opportunity to receive electricity if Russia continues to destroy our power infrastructure, and thus to save our power system," said Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, who chairs the management board of Ukraine's grid operator Ukrenergo. "We are sincerely grateful to our European partners for their great support and assistance during these difficult times."

The switch will allow energy suppliers in the continental grid that stretches from Portugal to Poland to supply electricity to Ukraine if necessary. This could allow Ukraine to turn off some of the coal-fired power plants it currently keeps running to ensure grid stability.

In the long-term, Ukraine could export surplus electricity generated by its nuclear power plants to the rest of Europe.

'Scum and traitors': Under pressure over Ukraine, Putin turns his ire on Russians

"He's clearly angry, emotional and feels the need to speak in this very aggressive tone," said John Lough, an associate fellow at London’s Chatham House think tank.

Lough thinks the speech was clearly aimed at Russia's elites, some of whom he believes are privately dismayed about the failure of the war and the economic backlash it has inflicted at home.

According to Lough, Putin was saying to the elites: "Don't think about having second thoughts. We're all in this together and if I go down, you go down."

The term “dictator” comes from ancient Rome — a man whom the republic would temporarily give absolute authority during crises. The advantages of untrammeled power in a crisis are obvious. A dictator can act quickly — no need to spend months negotiating legislation or fighting legal challenges. And he can impose necessary but unpopular policies. So there are times when autocratic rule can look more effective than the messiness of democracies bound by rule of law.

Dictatorship, however, starts to look a lot less attractive if it continues for any length of time.

The most important argument against autocracy is, of course, moral: Very few people can hold unrestrained power for years on end without turning into brutal tyrants.

Beyond that, however, in the long run autocracy is less effective than an open society that allows dissent and debate. As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, the advantages of having a strongman who can tell everyone what to do are more than offset by the absence of free discussion and independent thought.

I was writing at the time about Vladimir Putin, whose decision to invade a neighboring country looks more disastrous with each passing day. Evidently nobody dared to tell him that Russia’s military might was overrated, that Ukrainians were more patriotic and the West less decadent than he assumed and that Russia remained highly vulnerable to economic sanctions.

People in Lviv, Ukraine, put out 109 empty strollers in a city square this week. Some of the strollers had teddy bears. Each of the empty prams represents a child killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, black smoke was seen pouring from Lviv, which was rocked by explosions

Why should anybody believe any of that, Ted?

Did you already forget about the staged photo of the girl sitting in the window with an unloaded gun in her hand?

I mean, hell... The article that YOU provided stated 4/5ths of the way down that some dude on Facebook had the idea to give his daughter an unloaded gun and pose for the picture, but you didn't even read far enough down the article to see that it was staged and posted it in here as if you were watching something terrible.

We already know that you think in pictures and not words. Are you so fucked up in the head from public schooling that you can't even recognize propaganda when you see it?

All emotions. No brains.

Feels over facts.

Ted's reaction to photographs he can't verify make me think about a poster I had hung up in my last apartment after having worked a job for years that had those stupid motivational posters hung up in the hallways.

Anonymous has unleashed a successful cyber war to undermine Putin’s Ukraine invasion

The hacktivist collective has claimed responsibility for disabling government, corporate, and news websites.

Anonymous has claimed that it successfully infiltrated Russian state TV to show citizens the devastation of Putin's invasion of Ukraine. It also leaked emails and files from government agency Roskomnadzor, responsible for censoring Russian media.

Anonymous has since gained the support of more than 500,000 followers on its Twitter account, which now boasts more than 7.9 million followers.

A study conducted by Jeremiah Fowler, the co-founder of the cybersecurity company Security Discovery, finds that Anonymous' claims of hacking Russia are accurate. Attacks on Russian servers and websites coincide perfectly with Anonymous' hacking timeline.

Anonymous hacks Russian databases
92 out of 100 Russian databases analyzed had been compromised, and file names were changed to "Glory to Ukraine," "Putin stop this war," "stop war," "no war," "HackedByUkraine," and other pro-Ukrainian messages.

Most of the files reviewed in the databases were wiped out. Hacktivists used a script resembling the "MeowBot," which deletes the content of files and changes their names.

One of the compromised databases was The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) which is made up of 11 republics and used to coordinate information on finance, trade, lawmaking, and security between member states. Hundreds of files in the database were renamed to "putin_stop_this_war." Emails and weak administrative credentials were also leaked.

Another compromised database contained information that belonged to retailer Leroy Merlin, a French home improvement and gardening company. This database had security, analytics, authorization, administrator credentials, internal passwords, and logging data. Like the other databases, files were renamed to pro-Ukrainian messages.

Green Dot's database, which provides TV and internet services to 18 cities across Russia, was also exposed. While a small number of files in the database were renamed, they weren't deleted. Hackers, however, could have still gained enough information to target other areas of the network.

The worst-hit large country in the world was not the U.S., which registered the most official Covid-19 deaths of any country but ranks 47th in per capita excess mortality, or Britain, which ranks 85th, or even India, which ranks 36th. It is Russia, which has lost, The Economist estimates, between 1.2 million and 1.3 million citizens over the course of the pandemic, a mortality rate more than twice as high as the American one.

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/03/covid-excess-mortality.html

Excess mortality is simple: You look at the recent past to find an average for how many people die in a given country in a typical year, count the number of people who died during the pandemic years, and subtract one from the other.

As a measure of pandemic brutality, excess mortality isn’t biased by testing levels. In places like the U.S. and the U.K., a much higher percentage of COVID deaths were identified as such than in places like Belarus or Djibouti, making our pandemics appear considerably worse by comparison. By measuring against a baseline of expected death, excess mortality helps account for huge differences in the age structures of different countries, some of which may have many times more mortality risk than others because their populations are much older.

'estimates'?

More bullshit of the magical counting tricks, creative accounting from the Economist? while not the same as ‘cooking the books’

from that link you post very often, the per million figures

Even if you double Russia's numbers it is nowhere near number 1

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

Cases?

Faeroe Islands, Iceland, Andorra, Denmark, Gibraltar, Slovenia, Netherlands, San Marino
France ranks at 18th

Deaths?

Peru, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Georgia, Croatia, Czech
Brazil finally makes it in the top 15

It probably has nothing to do with Covid and more to do with Lockdowns
Russians are notorious drinkers, many probably drank themselves to death with vodka
They also beat the crap out of each other the men brawl with other men all the time, many take drugs and domestic violence is crazy, fights at home and wives dying or kids going crazy and more dying.
Russians have Murder Rate and Homicide compared to parts of the Middle East and Latin America, Locking down some Russian version of Here's Johnny inside a home for a long winter seems like a bad idea.

The American murder homicide number rates are a slight improvement over the Russian
