Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Quote:Originally posted by THG: Build Back Better plan may clear House this week, as White House says bill will combat inflation
Quote:House Democrats are expected to vote this week on a nearly $2 trillion social-spending bill, as Republicans sharpen their criticism of the measure amid the highest inflation in three decades. Called Build Back Better, the $1.75 trillion measure contains universal pre-K, electric-vehicle tax credits, paid leave and many more priorities touted by congressional Democrats and President Joe Biden. It would be paid for by a 15% corporate minimum tax, among other revenue-raisers.
Quote:Unlike the bipartisan infrastructure bill Biden is scheduled to sign Monday, the social-spending bill has no Republican support — and parts of it face resistance from Sen. Joe Manchin, the West Virginia Democrat. Approval by the House would send the measure to the Senate, where changes are all but certain.

Quote:The budget reconciliation package pushed by Democrats creates a new expanded child tax credit (CTC) that would pay illegal immigrants some $10.5 billion next year. All immigrants with children are eligible, regardless of how they got here and whether their children are U.S.-born. This includes the roughly 600,000 unaccompanied minors and persons in family units stopped at the border in FY2021 and released into the country pending a hearing. Cash welfare to illegal immigrants is not just costly; it also encourages more illegal immigration. Although it is referred to as a “refundable credit,” the new CTC, like the old additional child tax credit (ACTC) it replaces, pays cash to low-income families who do not pay any federal income tax. The new program significantly increases the maximum cash payment from $1,400 per child to $3,600 for children under 6, and to $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17. After 2022, the maximum payment would be $2,000 per child, but advocates hope the much larger payments will be extended. In an analysis conducted in October, my colleague Karen Zeigler and I estimated that illegal immigrants with U.S.-born children would receive $8.2 billion from the new CTC. However, we had assumed that the new program, like the old ACTC, would require children claimed as dependents to have Social Security numbers (SSNs). But reconciliation (page 1452, line 14) would permanently repeal this requirement.

Quote:With the Supreme Court’s blessing, Kacsmaryk ordered President Joe Biden’s administration to reinstate Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy ... Kacsmaryk’s decision is also unlawful for numerous reasons. One of the most important reasons is that it upends the balance of power between the president and unelected judges. Reinstating the Remain in Mexico program requires the Mexican government’s cooperation — which means that Kacsmaryk ordered the United States to change its diplomatic stance toward Mexico ... despite decades of warnings from the Supreme Court that judges should be “particularly wary of impinging on the discretion of the Legislative and Executive Branches in managing foreign affairs.”

Russia's red lines are clearly demarcated to Russian territory and their "near abroad" (border nations of the former Soviet Union) which make Ukraine and Georgia a top priority.

Quote:Originally posted by THG: New Poll Shows Americans' Changing Opinions on Biden, Putin, Zelensky Americans' perceptions of Russia's and Ukraine's leaders have changed significantly since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine two weeks ago, according to a new poll. But perceptions of their own president shifted only slightly. As Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues to dominate headlines, a new Economist/YouGov Poll released Thursday reveals how the conflict is shaping Americans' opinions of the three leaders. The poll found that Americans hold Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in high regard while an increasing minority view his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, as "weak" and ever more see him as a threat. President Joe Biden also saw a modest bump after months of declining approval. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/new-poll-shows-americans-changing-opinions-on-biden-putin-zelensky/ar-AAUTZgp?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531
