Given that this is - technically, at least- a democracy with mechanisms for peaceful change, it's remarkable that nothing ever really changes.

In order to stay in power in a (theoretical) democracy, TPTB have to control the vote. They do this several ways ... by

1) Controlling the candidates who appear on the ballot thru campaign donations to their favorites

2) Relentlessly propagandizing the people (that's us) every single waking moment thru broadcast, cable, and social media; in movies and print; thru adverts, storylines, and planted "news"
