It's one way to make a dent in the issue, and I'm glad the auto makers are going along; capitalism and public demand are the best ways to make things happen, even if government is there to help give it a push.

The Obama administration finalized new fuel economy rules Tuesday that within 12 years will almost double today's standard for cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon.

The rules, which have been in the works for several years, will add thousands of dollars to the cost of new cars. But in the long run, regulators say, drivers will spend less on gas, outweighing the additional cost at the dealership. They say the rules will also help reduce the nation's oil imports.

The standard takes effect in 2024 when 2025 model-year cars begin to hit dealer lots.

Major automakers such as General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) and Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500), which agreed to the new fuel standards when they were proposed by the Obama administration last year, are investing billions to develop new fuel-efficient cars and electric vehicles.

"What we know is that consumers want higher fuel efficiency in their cars and trucks and GM is going to give that to them," said a statement from GM on Tuesday. "While the requirements are aggressive, we intend to pursue them vigorously."

But the rules have some critics, including many conservative members of Congress. They object to the higher vehicle cost, what they say will be reduced vehicle choices for drivers who want large cars or trucks, and say safety will suffer as a result of new lighter vehicles.

The current mileage rules run through the 2016 model year. The new rules will gradually start to take effect with the model year 2017 cars and raise the mileage standards from there.

"We know that these standards are both achievable and cost-effective," said Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Linda Jackson during a press call Tuesday.

But if the industry has problems meeting the new standards, the rules do have a review process built in that could reduce the fuel efficiency target. http://money.cnn.com/2012/08/28/autos/fuel-economy-rules/index.html?ii

I find their argument about safety kind of amusing, given the lack of safety in many current gas guzzlers.

Of course, if the Republicans get power, I'm sure all that is out the window, but I hope not; I may believe we're past tipping point, but anything we can do to delay what I believe is inevitable is something of which I'm in favor.

Go for it, righties, I'm sure you have a lot to say.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

If you want to slow global climate shift, throttle our military to about 10% of its current size- enuf to defend our borders, not to control the world.

The USA military is the largest single institutional user of fossil fuels in the world, and that doesn't include the emissions from weapons and hardware production.

I think that only a Russian troll would come up with the idea of cutting back American military fuel use. Why? Because Russians think only about military conflict, not about making a good faith argument about climate change:

17 years worth of American military greenhouse gas emissions totals 1,212 million metric tons.
1 year worth of American civilian emissions from only transportation totals 1,376 million metric tons. As even a Russian can see, civilian is 20 times bigger than military. The comparison is even more lopsided when comparing just overseas military fuel use to civilian transportation fuel use:

The best estimate of US military greenhouse gas emissions from 2001, when the wars began with the US invasion of Afghanistan, through 2017, is that the US military has emitted 1,212 million metric tons of greenhouse gases (measured in CO2equivalent, or CO2e).

DOD emissions for all military operations from 2001 to 2017 are estimated to be about 766 million metric tons of CO2e. And of these military operations, it is estimated that total war-related emissions including for the “overseas contingency operations" in the major war zones of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Syria, are more than 400 Million Metric Tons of CO2e.

How much carbon dioxide is produced from U.S. gasoline and diesel fuel consumption?
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that in 2020, U.S. motor gasoline and diesel (distillate) fuel consumption in the U.S. transportation sector resulted in the emission of about 948 million metric tons (MMmt) of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 428 MMmt of CO2, respectively, for a total of 1,376 MMmt of CO2. This total was equal to about 84% of total U.S. transportation sector CO2 emissions and to about 30% of total U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions in 2020.1

In two more years nobody will be able to pretend that Joe* is a functional human being. Nobody is buying it right now.
