What Happened When Other Countries Prosecuted Former Leaders?

It happens all the time, just not in the U.S.

Part of the anxiety over prosecuting a former president stems from the fact that it’s never been done before in the United States. In other democracies, however, prosecutions of former leaders are very common. And these prosecutions contain some lessons for the U.S. going forward.

Many stories about tax-cheating/bribe-taking leaders going to jail (but not in the U.S.) are at https://web.archive.org/web/20201203013637/https://slate.com/news-and-

New PPP data shows two dozen businesses at Trump and Kushner properties received federal loans
Half of the program's allocated $522 billion in loans went to only 5% of recipients

The Small Business Administration (SBA) on Tuesday released extensive new data indicating that half of the coronavirus Paycheck Protection Program's (PPP) $522 billion in taxpayer-funded loans went to only 5% of recipients, according to preliminary reviews.

The data, which came in response to multiple Freedom of Information Act requests and a lawsuit, offered the most complete accounting yet of the sweeping emergency relief effort. It showed that PPP loans disproportionately favored bigger businesses, including more than two dozen properties owned by the Trump Organization and the family of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior White House adviser.

Congress included the PPP in the CARES Act this spring, pitching it as a bridge for small businesses to weather the economic crisis precipitated by the pandemic. The government would forgive the loans as long as businesses could show that the money went to specific essential expenses, such as payroll, rent and utilities. (Disclosure: Salon received a PPP loan to keep our staff and independent journalism at 100%.)

However, news reports soon revealed apparent inequities in the program, with millions going to big businesses, including major chain brands and energy companies. Minority-owned businesses received a disproportionately small slice of the funding — Wells Fargo reported allocating PPP money to just one Black-owned business — while big banks pocketed upwards of $10 billion in processing fees.

Lock him up!! Lock him up!!

I don't think that is possible, knowing how slow courts operate when a defendant has enough money to appeal and delay. Besides that, Trump might drop dead because of obesity before the wheels can even get turning. For example, fatso President Andrew Johnson, who got impeached, died at 66. Trump is fatter than Johnson and older.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Johnson#Death

Here’s Why Republicans Should Support Impeachment of Donald Trump: It’s true that an impeachment trial can’t be finished before January 20, which makes it seem sort of pointless. But for two reasons, it’s not.

First, trying to overturn an election violently and illegally in order to stay in power is, by definition, something that a president can only do during his last month or so in power. Doing nothing about it sends a message that lame duck presidents can basically do anything with impunity. I hardly need to explain why this is a very bad precedent to set.

Second, an impeachment trial might be curiously attractive to Republicans, whose support will be needed. They would obviously be reluctant to support an impeachment that would toss one of their own out of office. But this one wouldn’t. Instead, a conviction would do two things. First, it gives the Senate the authority to prevent Trump from ever running again for federal office. Second, it would rescind some of Trump’s perks of retirement, including his pension, office space, and government-paid staff.

There are at least a handful of Republicans who believe that Trump’s actions are indeed impeachable, and these folks might believe that it’s quite fitting for Trump to pay a price for his actions that’s short of removal from office. Are there 17 of them? It’s worth finding out.

One technical detail about that vote that could be interesting: it's 2/3rds of seated senate members at the time of the vote. No doubt McConnell would have some control of that, but what if many Rep members don't want to go on record for that vote and stay away? I'll reach for anything at this point, including death by McDonalds.

Clyburn says House Democrats will vote this week to impeach Trump but may wait to send articles to Senate

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Sunday that the House plans to vote this week to impeach President Trump — but that the chamber may wait a few months to submit the articles of impeachment to the Senate.

Tomorrow, Monday the charges will be put forth.

We have a lot of republicans suggesting they overlook what happened in the name of unity. Still JO, they are trying to find ways to cover Trump and their own asses. I agree, all involved need to answer for it. I was reading today a lot of corporate money will be denied to all those who voted to block the authorization of the Biden win. The more people who see the Capital assault videos, and newer videos as they come in, the angrier people get.

Impeachment Resolution Cites Trump's 'Incitement' Of Capitol Insurrection

The impeachment article says that during an address to supporters on Wednesday, Trump "willfully made statements that, in context, encouraged — and foreseeably resulted in — lawless action at the Capitol, such as: 'if you don't fight like hell you're not going to have a county anymore.' "

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution prohibits any person who has "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against" the United States from "holding an office ... under the United States." In his conduct while President of the United States — and in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, provide, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed — Donald John Trump engaged in high Crimes and Misdemeanors by inciting violence against the Government of the United States.

Here is where we are: After last week’s assault on the US Capitol by pro-Trump rioters, there have been lots of calls from Republicans for “unity” and “reconciliation” instead of impeachment.

The pleas for unity, however well-intentioned, obscure a crucial fact: This is not a bipartisan crisis. The Republican Party welcomed Trump into their ranks and indulged and excused him for four years. They nurtured the movement that led to the attack on the Capitol.

Even after the Capitol was violently sacked, even after at least five people were killed, a poll showed that 45 percent of Republicans support the invasion. That means millions upon millions of Americans see no problem in disrupting the peaceful transfer of power, a bedrock of constitutional democracy. And mere hours after the crisis at the Capitol, nearly 150 Republican lawmakers formally objected to the results of the 2020 election anyway.

So that’s where we are.

Intel strongly suggests this isn’t over. Yet no one is calling on the president and the Republican Party to tell their radical right to stand down. One sentence in a speech telling them to do so by the president doesn't cut it. That alone is reason enough to impeach and then pursue further charges.

As I just posted in another thread. This is also about blocking Trump from getting any of the perks presented to a President after he/she leaves office. Those perks are substantial.

What becomes of the country if the GOP can’t, for whatever reason, de-radicalize?

It’s not a dodge to keep going back to history, but a majority of Americans supported the America First position prior to December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. If a vote had been taken on December 6 as to whether we should defeat Nazism and Japanese imperialism, I think Americans would have voted overwhelmingly against it. Likewise, a majority of Americans are overwhelmingly against punishing Trump.

Once the United States got into WWII, you would have expected FDR to call for healing and unity. But in fact, Roosevelt attacked the most prominent isolationists, calling them the new “copperheads.” Copperhead was the term for Democrats who still supported slavery and the Southern cause in the wake of the Civil War’s outbreak. Roosevelt correctly intuited that isolationists had to be completely defeated at that moment, not made peace with.

Now is the time to say no, to take a forceful stand against Trumpian neo-fascist opposition to democracy and the constitutional order, to say that we can’t permit this to go on anymore and that we have to anathematize those who believe otherwise. And that means marginalizing the people insisting the election was stolen. It means legal action against the people who invaded the Capitol and those who gave them support. And ultimately, it requires a forceful military and police response to these kinds of disorders and attempted overthrows of the government.

We’re not in for happy times. But I’m enough of a Christian to remember the line about Christ bringing not peace, but a sword. And I think that probably is what’s going to have to happen to get past this dark period. https://biblehub.com/matthew/10-34.htm

The demographic structure of our population is changing fast and isn’t racist friendly. The populism message will always appeal to the uneducated in our country, but with the white supremacist population in decline, that message will be less alluring in our election process.

The up and coming republicans will distance themselves from the Trump era.

Tim Alberta, Politico’s chief political correspondent, writes, “I know for a fact several members *want* to impeach but fear casting that vote could get them or their families murdered. Numerous House Republicans have received death threats in the past week.”

They reap what they sow. It is what it is and Trump will be impeached.

One sentence in a speech telling them to do so by the president doesn't cut it. That alone is reason enough to impeach and then pursue further charges.

What becomes of the country if the GOP can’t, for whatever reason, de-radicalize?

The demographic structure of our population is changing fast and isn’t racist friendly. The populism message will always appeal to the uneducated in our country, but with the white supremacist population in decline, that message will be less alluring in our election process.

The up and coming republicans will distance themselves from the Trump era.

That's all very nice, but slow demographic change over decades won't stop Trumptards from bombing Federal Buildings all over the country this year and storming into State Capitol buildings before Jan 20th. It won't stop voters from blaming Biden for the violence and then voting even more Republicans into Congress in 2022.

I even expect the Trumptards to blame Biden for every Covid-19 death starting Jan 20th. It's all Biden's fault; throw him out of office; get Trump back because he was handling the pandemic perfectly.

For the rest of the year I will be hearing something like this from Texas Trumptards:

Jordan Whines That Dems Are ‘Canceling’ Trump For Inciting Deadly Coup Attempt

In a truly monumental invocation of GOP handwringing over “cancel culture,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) on Wednesday tried to paint Democrats’ second impeachment of President Donald Trump, who encouraged his supporters to storm the Capitol in a violent siege that left five people dead, as a tyrannical suppression of Trump’s freely held beliefs.

“Democrats are going to impeach the President for a second time one week, one week before he leaves office. Why? Why?” the Republican asked on the House floor ahead of the impeachment vote. “Politics and the fact that they want to cancel the President.”

Jordan proceeded to rant about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe and Democrats’ first impeachment of Trump over the Ukraine scandal.

“It’s not just about impeachment anymore,” he said. “It’s about canceling, as I’ve said. Canceling the President and anyone that disagrees with them.”

Then came a doomsday prophecy.

“It needs to stop because if it continues, if it continues, it won’t just be Republicans who get canceled, it won’t just be the President of the United States,” Jordan thundered. “The cancel culture will come for us all.”

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

McConnell made some moves like he would support impeachment but must have gotten such backlash that he decided not to convene the Senate for impeachment hearings.

Polling shows support for Trump holding steady, or rising, so impeaching Trump would be disaster for the GOP, and not too wise for Dems either So he saved the GOP's bacon, and even the Dem's too.

But they play these kinds of games, proposing stuff that they hope will never happen, because it gives them the chance to spout off and make points with the base while not having to deal with the consequences.

I know SECOND I’ve been watching the hearings for hours now. Currently the actual vote to impeach is in progress and 10 republicans have crossed the isle and voted to convict. There are enough votes now to convict. As for Jordon, his donors are running for the hills. That and I’m hoping he is censured. This is a long way from over.

Your Texas neighbors are republican first. Then comes god and country. Trump has caused many god fearing people to become worshipers of him over god. He has motivated them in a way where they’ve lost their moral compass.

Trump has been impeached for the second time. I think Pelosi will send the articles of impeachment to the Senate after the 20th, at which point they will control the Senate.

McConnell decided he won't approve any Biden appointees before Jan 20th, so Biden is giving every Trump appointee, either acting or confirmed, the boot out of the door and replacing them all temporarily with career officials. McConnell had apparently never intended to approve any names from Biden. Lucky that the Democrats won the Senate runoff elections in Georgia or else McConnell would make sure nobody Biden wants will ever be confirmed for anything.

I was hoping Biden would send out notice to all Trumps appointees to hand in there resignations. It makes me very happy to hear it's happening second.

As for McConnell, I hope Pelosi holds onto the impeachment articles until they control the senate. I don't trust him.

My hope of hopes is that this latest rebellion by corporate America cutting off the money, will compel the Republicans to straighten out. Mark my words. In the not to distant future, the truth about the lies Trump spread of a stolen election, lies they supported and helped to spread, will be admitted to by many Republicans themselves.

I believe it will be the tool with which the Republicans separate themselves into two groups. Republicans, or seditious Republican Trump supporters, in order to get corporate support again.
