Sorry, Barry.

Of course you go right past the more important point and go for immaturity. "A point against Barack is a win for me!" Really? Why do you care?

Try and consider this, you might find it more interesting: I can see people on both sides of this debate reading that book and thinking it speaks to their possible future if the other side wins.

1) Download Orwell 1984 for free at https://libgen.unblockit.ltd/search.php?req=Orwell+1984
Many critics have speculated on the sources behind Orwell’s
dystopian work. He was fascinated with Shakespeare’s Macbeth,
and that play is a well-known influence. He had read two
similar books, both of which are often taught in tandem with
Nineteen Eighty-Four: Yevgeny Ivenovich Zamyatin’s We (1924)
and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932).

2) The animating force of modern Republicanism is this: Democratic Party rule is an existential threat to America and is by definition illegitimate. It is a belief that explains much of what we’ve seen from the GOP in the past few decades, the glue that binds together Republicans.

Political scientists Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt, in their book How Democracies Die, talk of “mutual toleration”: the idea that, in a democracy, both parties respect the other one’s right to win elections and hold power. In the United States, Republicans have all but told their supporters that Democrats do not, in fact, have a right to rule — that they are fundamentally hostile to the American way of life.

3) I was talking with a longtime member of the militant movement who says he’s a veteran of the elite special operations community. This is an older but still formidable man has always been genial with me. We were talking about the election and his conviction that there was massive fraud when he changed his tone and veered off into a very dark place. “What ultimately happens is some people stand with Trump and some people stand against the country. Some people stand with the coup, some people stand against the coup, and nobody stands with the law or morality at that point, and that’s where the war begins,” he said. “When we actually get involved, we’re going to kill Democrats, liberals, and communists at a rate that will defy anything that’s occurred in history, and when that happens, we’re going to make sure that it’s done so thoroughly that we don’t ever have to have this argument again. … It’s going to be so ugly and ruthless. … We’re going to go to the homes of the tank operators [who would be called in to put down an insurrection] and kill their wives and their children and nail them to the walls.”

Barry was a joke. Don't let that derail your brain. I only came back and added that line after I looked at the list and saw his ugly mug on a second viewing.

I don't see how your side could possibly read that book and think that in 2021. You've been cheerleading corporate censorship for 4 years now whenever it happens, simply because it's voices that you don't agree with being silenced. Your argument this whole time was that a corporation is free to do whatever it wants. Now we have proof that not only will they ban you or me without any explanation whatsoever with no way of fighting it, but they will also unapologetically silence politicians themselves. This makes them more powerful than our own government in the age of digital discourse.

Hell... I can't even begin to guess how many times Nilbog had taken lines straight from the book like "if you're not doing anything wrong then what do you have to worry about?"

1984 is the most terrifying book ever written.

And the worst part is, the microphones and cameras in real life are impossible to see and so cheap to make that even if everybody wasn't walking around with one and had a bunch of them in their own houses, they'd be everywhere anyhow.

You need to take a step back and stop celebrating this behavior before it's too late for you.

The fact that 1984 is on the bestseller list today is the same reason that I stated yesterday that in the coming years I think it will actually be Marcos that I'm most aligned with in the RWED.

I know that it appears that we don't agree on much right now, but the entire dynamic is about to have a seismic shift and new lines are going to be drawn.

6ix, you have been dreaming of a revolution ever since you saw the movie Joker. If the GOP goes Joker on society by killing some Democrats and blowing up Federal buildings, the dithering Independent voters will drift over into voting for Democrats. After that, the GOP loses many elections in 2022. That is the "seismic shift and new lines" drawn.

Wow. All of that work to prove nothing.

Not a single quote showing that I'm all about supporting a revolution.

Most of my praise was for the acting of Joaquin Phoenix himself, and I know I said it would be hard for me to recommend the movie to others because of how uncomfortable an experience it was.

Dig through those 60 posts I made and find one that backs up your regurgitation of Leftist Legacy Media claims that violent people love Joker and/or Joker will make people violent.

I'll wait.

(SPOILER ALERT: 3/4 of quotes of mine in your last post already discounts the first half of that.)

Meanwhile, maybe I should share my archived links of your death threats to the President or where you've suggested that everybody should kill their bosses and steal everything they own. You know... the one's you subsequently deleted but were backed up by two of us already before you deleted them.

You keep reminding me why reality kicks your ass, 6ix. And don't tell me that you're doing okay. I hear that same "I'm okay" from every Trumptard I know in Texas. Why should you be a smaller failure than they are? None of them are doing okay, and in every case it is their own fault. Everyone of these dumb Trumptards think they are getting screwed out of what they rightfully deserve by Democrats. They think that the whole world needs to be overhauled because things aren't going to their liking. Everyday is Orwell's '1984' for the Trumptards and they want a fight. The fight they could win, and would fix their lives, is inside their heads, but Trumptards see that it is external world, not themselves, needs straightening. Trumptards who think they can fix their lives by changing the externals: either withdrawing from life or voting or revolting, are delusional and will fail slowly into misery.

Sigh. The trolls do show their true colors don't they, because they really DON'T stick to the topic.

1984 is the Bestselling Book on Amazon

In any case, I hope it means that people are trying to learn how government (with corporate alliances) can take over the "information-space" and how not to be fooled by it. Which doesn't necessarily mean being a Q or FOX or Parler follower either.

Nobody should "believe" any unevidenced statements put out by ANY source. Instead, I hope people are learning how important it is to sift out actual FACTS based on EVIDENCE gleaned from a wide range of sources, including left, right, and foreign.

Don't let the fact that it happened to Trump this time make you forget that this is something that should concern you.

Censorship and privacy rights have always been important to me and have been an unwavering stance of mine since before 2005 when I joined this site. It doesn't matter who was president, or who controlled the Senate or the House.

It is 1984 and if Big Brother Trump can't Tweet, his bowels might explode:

United States is Leaderless while Trump feuds With Twitter and Professional Golfers’ Association

Not since Washington's farewell address has an American leader ended his term in such a fitting way.

Amid still-spiking coronavirus numbers and a violent insurrection crisis he helped create, Donald Trump is laser-focused on using his last hours as president to complain that he was removed from a social media app that originally came to prominence as a means by which teenagers could stay abreast of Justin Bieber’s daily schedule, reports say.

Since conceding in a video issued under duress last Thursday that Joe Biden is the certified winner of the presidential election and that a new administration will take over the government on Jan. 20, the chief executive has not appeared in public or released any statements. CNBC’s Eamon Javers reports, however, that administration officials are considering “the idea of President Trump making remarks on camera today about big tech,” while the Washington Post says he “plans to spend the final days of his term in office railing against the industry.”

Twitter and Facebook both suspended Trump’s account when he released a video praising the individuals who were occupying the Capitol. When the president returned from his suspension Thursday to make remarks that could be interpreted as calls to continue violently disputing the election result, Twitter announced a permanent ban—a removal that marked a stunning fall from grace for a man who was once thought of alongside Ashton Kutcher and Snooki as one of the service’s signature personalities. (Trump is also reportedly furious at PGA of America for canceling a scheduled 2022 event at his golf course in New Jersey.)

The business of governing the United States, meanwhile, is being done by people besides the president on an ad hoc basis. Vice President Mike Pence—who reportedly hasn’t spoken to Trump since the president denounced him during the Capitol riot—is scheduled to lead a coronavirus task force meeting at the White House on Monday afternoon and, according to Politico, is being treated as the head of the executive branch in a “wink, wink, nod, nod” way by lawmakers and other officials. Pence, and not Trump, will attend Biden’s swearing-in; Pence also spoke to the family of the Capitol Police officer who was killed in the riot to offer condolences, which the president has not done.

For the last four years, the president’s most well-credentialed and nominally respectable allies argued that he would be more appreciated for his accomplishments in governance if he were able to suppress his impulse to make inflammatory comments online. Given a chance to prove that, though, when Twitter pulled the plug, he’s shown that his only governing priority is getting back to posting again. To Trump and to the supporters who understood him best, being in a position to air talk-radio grievances from the presidential pulpit always was his most important accomplishment.

I have read it.

I read a book called "Amusing Ourselves To Death" by Neil Postman in my early 20's which would have been somewhere during the first few years of GWB's Presidency.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amusing_Ourselves_to_Death

This is the cover variant that I read, and it happens to be my favorite:

It was in my grandma's basement while I was living there for a few years before I got my shit together. There were a ton of books down there that were my uncle's, my dad's, my grandma's and a few that were over 100 years old that I've still got tucked away in a safe place today.

On a side note, I probably never would have read it if the copy in the basement was one of the other boring versions...

Amusing Ourselves to Death was scary, and fairly accurate to what I had experienced up to that point, and it was already nearly 20 years old itself.

It made frequent references to both 1984 and Brave New World.

I've always been glad that I read Brave New World after reading 1984 (It's possible that Neil Postman recommended reading them in that order, but I couldn't say without reading his book again). Both were really sad stories for sure, but at least everyone was so high out of their brains on a drug with no side effects to notice it in Brave New World, and only those who made the choice to stop taking the drugs questioned anything. I've lived nearly 20 years now believing that we're headed toward one of those two worlds. I'm really rooting for Brave New World.

I've made tons of references to both books over the years here.

You should read Amusing Ourselves to Death if you haven't already.

Not sure how it holds up today, since I read it half a lifetime ago and it's 36 years old now. I'm also not sure at all what political slant it comes from either, as I read it during much simpler times where I wasn't at all politically affiliated except for on the most superficial level. But after reading all three of those books I was fiercely against GWB, neverending conflict in the Middle East and the Patriot Act.

Oh... and I also went through about a 5 year period where I was beyond paranoid about our Government, and it took maturing to the point to realize that I'm not the bright shiny center of the universe and I'm not really all that interesting to finally get over that. That being said, I think once is enough, reading 1984. I'm actually kind of afraid to read it again.

As it turns out, thanks to whistleblowers like Snowden, most of that paranoid stuff I was telling my friends and family the government had the capability to do was actually happening IRL. And when everybody just kind of let it go down the memory hole after a few weeks I thought to myself "why the hell am I driving myself nuts about this anymore when everybody else knows what I've been saying for years is true and nobody else seems to give a shit?"

To this day, I've never watched a TV show or movie based off of either book and I refuse to. I don't want my own memories of those stories tainted by somebody else's vision of them.

You've been cheerleading corporate censorship for 4 years now whenever it happens [ lie ],

Your argument this whole time was that a corporation is free to do whatever it wants.[ lie ]
Now we have proof that not only will they ban you or me without any explanation whatsoever [ lie ]

Hell... I can't even begin to guess how many times Nilbog had taken lines straight from the book like "if you're not doing anything wrong then what do you have to worry about?" [ that's true in any society so whether that is good or bad DEPENDS on the society. If Magats took over can you imagine what their society would be like? I can - 1984 ]

1984 is the most terrifying book ever written. [ hmmm, close - bible? ]

And the worst part is, the microphones and cameras in real life are impossible to see and so cheap to make that even if everybody wasn't walking around with one and had a bunch of them in their own houses, they'd be everywhere anyhow.
[ thank god for those cam phones - cops would be killing people of all colors left and right without any days off ]

You need to take a step back and stop celebrating this behavior before it's too late for you. [ what behavior? Holding people who violently try and over throw the elected government accountable? So, whoever is the most violent is in power and forget voting, just king of the hill? Do you read with any comprehension? ]

The fact that 1984 is on the bestseller list today is the same reason that I stated yesterday that in the coming years I think it will actually be Marcos that I'm most aligned with in the RWED. [ who fucking cares ]

I know that it appears that we don't agree on much right now, but the entire dynamic is about to have a seismic shift and new lines are going to be drawn. [ Putin wishes to thank you for your service to mother Russia ]

Censorship?? It's called "smart business." He's bad for business, ds.

"Facing an unprecedented threat to US democracy, companies appear to be recalculating the benefits and risks of being associated with Trump.
My CNN Business colleague Matt Egan points out that the Business Roundtable cheered on the CEO president after his election in 2016, applauding his tax plans and appointment of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs banker.
Last week, the influential business lobby struck a very different tone, slamming US politicians for spreading the "fiction of a fraudulent 2020 presidential election."

So KIKI: not smart or just agitating? Both!

Trump had all that time on Twitter to tweet: "Wear a mask, wash your hands, social distance when around others and stay indoors unless you are designated essential service provider" and we would be out of lock down by now. 100's of thousands of lives and jobs would have been saved, and millions? billions? of dollars saved. Instead, he used it to gin up a riot and an attempted over throw of the duly elected government - which many of you use to use as a defense of Trump. The entire freaking PLANET would be better off today if Twitter/FB etc had banned him in 2019. But I don't suppose you care about any of that.

You've got a problem, Cap'n, when somebody can already know the stance you would take on any issue by knowing what the antagonists in 1984 would think.

I read Brave New World right after I read 1984. Both futures are rather horrific, but I certainly would prefer BNW to 1984. At least they bred everyone for their designed roles without a speck of intelligence higher than they needed to function in them and everybody was too doped up to realize how fucked they were.

1984 was the scariest book I ever read, with only Animal Farm coming close to it.

I may or may not have already mentioned this in this thread. I know I brought it up here before.

Orwell was writing about the recent past and the Soviet Union of 1948. Orwell was telling the English that this is their future unless they do something to stop the Russians.

The society in 1984, although fictional, mirrors the political weather of the societies that existed all around him. Orwell's Oceania is a terrifying society reminiscent of Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union — complete repression of the human spirit, absolute governmental control of daily life, constant hunger, and the systematic "vaporization" of individuals who do not, or will not, comply with the government's values.

Orwell despised the politics of the leaders he saw rise to power in the countries around him, and he despised what the politicians did to the people of those countries. Big Brother is certainly a fusing of both Stalin and Hitler, both real and terrifying leaders, though both on opposite sides of the philosophical spectrum. By combining traits from both the Soviet Union's and Germany's totalitarian states, Orwell makes clear that he is staunchly against any form of governmental totalitarianism, either from the left or the right of the political spectrum.

By making Big Brother so easily recognizable (he is physically similar to both Hitler and Stalin, all three having heavy black mustaches and charismatic speaking styles), Orwell makes sure that the reader of 1984 does not mistake his intention — to show clearly how totalitarianism negatively affects the human spirit and how it is impossible to remain freethinking under such circumstances.

Luckily, the English-speaking part of the world understood the message in the novel 1984 about Russia back in 1948, but nowadays dimwits think 1984 is a message about the dreaded Democrats of 2023, not about Putin's simple plan to destroy Ukraine either with explosives or starvation or brainwashing Ukrainian children.

All I saw while reading 1984 was the current state of affairs both in technology and in the American government under GWB.

All I see in 1984 today is the current state of affairs both in technology in the American government under Joe Biden*.

This is why it's so terrifying. Because it is real and it's happening right here.

(And at least Winston could spot the cameras and microphones to avoid them once he knew about their existence. Do you know how small the Alexa microphone in a Firestick Remote is? You probably wouldn't unless you removed the tiny housing to find it and see how much smaller than the housing it was before you ripped Alexa's ears out.

Consider that when the microphone about the size of half a grain of rice in there is just one of many parts contained in a device that you can regularly get on sale for a measly $20 in current year and even if you don't own a smartphone you're always within earshot of a few hundred other people with microphones always on and always listening who do every day.)
