Can't jump off when you've never jumped back on.

Que sera sera...

Guess I lost there like I did with Bitcoin. But the bright side is when the Dow finally crashes hard like Bitcoin did, I won't be one of the ones that lost their ass on it either.

It could be 1 year, or 2 years or 5 years or 10 years from now, but it will crash. All snark aside, I really do hope you're lucky and pull out at the right time buddy.

The only good thing that came out of the layoff from my last good job is that my 401k had been taken out of the extremely aggressive fund that had been getting nearly 30% returns for 5 years straight only a month before the bottom fell out. That literally would have ruined me and I never would have been able to buy a house.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Maybe NASDAQ will hit 10K before Dow hits 30K.

I'm quite sure we'll see both of those records happen fairly soon. Once they do reach those highs, however, I'll be placing Stop-Sell orders on all my stock holdings as a sensible precaution to protect the terrific profit I've earned during the last five years.

Some of you may remember that the Thanksgiving time is historically an opportunity to market time some profits. the difference in stock prices from Wednesday to Black Friday and on to Cyber Monday have provided some trends fairly predictably. The notable exception was the year of that default from something like Abu Dubai on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday.

Americans are lining up in historic numbers at food banks across the country this week as the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbates levels of food insecurity for millions of people.

As the Thanksgiving holiday draws closer, news reports from states around the U.S. indicate that more Americans face food insecurity now than at any time in recent decades.

I don't recall right now if Friday has historically dropped since Wed, and then Monday bounced back (gained) since Friday, or if it is the opposite.

I'll look for that, and see how things work out this time.

No. It's not based on my feels.

I know that you're too cheap to buy internet for your house, but look at the daily fucking mailers you get mailed to your house.

That’s capitalism: The Dow skyrockets, so does hunger
https://www.cpusa.org/article/thats-capitalism-the-dow-goes-up-and-so-
does-the-suffering
/

Yesterday the stock market hit 30,000 for the first time. After weeks of radio silence, Donald Trump appeared in the White House press room and gave a minute-long rant, extolling the numbers, even calling them “sacred.” Can you imagine? On the highest day ever recorded so far of U.S. COVID-19 cases, Trump trumpets a market rally instead of human lives. As Grandma used to say, “Father be merciful!”

But the story doesn’t end there. It’s not only COVID deaths that are increasing. On the day before the Thanksgiving holiday, miles and miles of food lines are spreading all over the country. Congress has adjourned, and due to the GOP’s blocking of a stimulus bill, hunger is stalking millions. But Trump — and let’s say it, Wall Street — is jumping for joy.

Consider this gem: Long lines are also forming outside COVID testing centers, and wealthy New Yorkers are paying “professional” line standers to hold their place in the queue as they seek test documentation before traveling. No matter that they’re ignoring public health warnings urging people to stay home. And guess who’ll jump to the head of the line when vaccines become available?

Sadly, but predictably, unemployment claims are also up. Jobless claims jumped this week to 778,000 from 740,000. In addition, the number of those losing benefits and filing emergency claims also leaped. The total receiving benefits rose to 20.45 million for the week ended Nov. 7, up 135,297 from the week before.

Benefits for 14 million workers will expire at year’s end.

But instead of addressing the crisis facing working-class lives, Trump was on his way to Gettysburg, PA, with Giuliani continuing their effort to disenfranchise Black voters and overturn the election. The trip, however, was cancelled because Giuliani was exposed again to another person who’s COVID positive. How many in Trump’s orbit have now been exposed?

About 12% of Americans report food shortages in the last few weeks, a fact lost on Trump and Wall Street.

But that’s capitalism: the stock market goes up, up, up, while the length of food, unemployment, and hospital ER lines get longer, longer, and longer.

It is a weakness to call the only bill which has a chance of passing "that Socialist wet dream". It would be strength to say the people who actually need help won't take government help out of personal pride. Instead, they will receive without having to ask or beg their family, friends, neighbors, or the GOP more help than the Federal government could ever give. But for a practical matter I know Trump voters won't be giving any more than meager help and only to family members they aren't feuding with. Ask Mitch McConnell for help. He has shown that he gives nothing.

It's clever how Sen. Mitch McConnell from Kentucky can starve people in Indiana. But how can he get away with that? Why don't wealthier, well-fed people of Indiana complain bitterly about what Mitch is doing to the poorer citizens of Indiana? It is very simple:

All Mitch has to do is label the only solution to the starvation problem that is ready to go as soon as Mitch changes his mind, the Heroes Act, as "Socialism" (maybe he should have called it "Communism" because that ALWAYS works) and then the Trump voters will agree with Mitch that the Federal government can't do anything about starvation as long as the solution is based on either "Socialism" or "Communism".

What is even more clever about what Mitch has done is that he freed the richer half of the population of Indiana from paying for food to end starvation of the poorer half of Indiana. That intrastate transfer of money between the rich and the poor would also be called either "Socialism" or "Communism". Good job, Mitch! You protected the wealthy from those "Socialists" or "Communists" and their evil "Socialism" or their worse "Communism". And all Mitch had to do is throw around some empty words in order to save trillions of dollars being paid by the wealthy. The wealthy should be very thankful for what Mitch can do for them. When the wealthy have to directly starve the poor, the wealthy get called "Ebenezer Scrooge". The wealthy don't like being called names during the Christmas Season.

I almost forgot. The wealthy don't pay taxes to help the poor. That would be "Communism". See Trump's tax returns. He effectively fights "Communism" by not paying. https://theintercept.com/2020/09/28/donald-trump-taxes/

All the Trump-loving poor white trash I know in Texas say they are doing pretty good, even when I know they live on less than a couple thousand per month and go to the food bank. They have no idea how rich I am, even though I'm no different than they are, other than I stopped believing 48 years ago all the nonsense Trump lovers spout about the evils of Democrats' "Socialism" and the horrors of Democrats' "Communism" and the wonderfulness of Republicans' "Capitalism". There is really no way to fix the goddamn stupid ideas circulating in their minds that keep them poor and allow them to smugly complain that it is Nancy Pelosi's fault that people are starving. They can't understand that it is Mitch McConnell who is actually causing starvation.

Those Trump-loving poor white trash also have very peculiar ideas about the Dow-Jones, but I gave up, in the early Clinton administration, trying to correct their misunderstandings. Some people are going stay poor forever, despite insisting they are doing pretty good, because they won't change what they are doing.

i sold a bunch of stocks back in March. The Dow had just gone from 30,000 to 18,000 in less than two weeks. Days later I was feeling pretty good about the decision I made to take a reasonable loss and stop what could have been a catastrophic loss. But as the Markets have since FULLY rebounded in only eight months I find myself realizing I panicked and did the wrong thing in March by selling. Oh well, sometimes you guess wrong. And to top it off with a cherry on top, CD rates have recently crashed, so there's almost no place left that's safe to earn any sort of substantial interest. May 2021 will mark 10 years since I retired. It's truly been wonderful not working, just enjoying living, although this year of the pandemic has kinda sucked.

Sorry to hear that man...

I did very well in the stock market back when I was younger, but all it took was losing my ass on one individual purchase to realize that I don't really know shit and I was just extremely lucky and the beneficiary of being at the right place at the right time. So since then, the only money I've ever had in the market was putting 401k contributions that were 100% matched by the company in the lowest risk fund I could, and then transferring them over to my zero risk holdings in the IRA when I wasn't working there anymore.

My single investment is my house, and IMO, it's the place where I have the potential for the greatest return. If the market just totally tanks forever, then we're all up shit's creek. But in the mean time I'm currently living in a much nicer place than I had this time a year ago and at hardly any cost other than my time and labor. This investment is further bolstered by having the time to only buy materials when they're on great sales or clearanced out. So far in the last year I'd estimate that I've only spent around $3,000 on the house, but at full price it would have been closer to $9,000 in materials. Labor for the work done so far would have easily cost me $25,000 or more if I paid somebody else to do it all.

So if the market crashes and we're all screwed, I still have a virtually free place to live that is much nicer than it used to be. If the housing market is fine when I go to sell the house, I have a good chance of tripling my initial investment before I move down south near my brother and downsize into a much more manageable single story home with a really nice nest egg where I can spend the rest of my days tinkering in my garage with my toys and making a bunch of cool shit.

This makes me sad.

On 17 March my state went into Lockdown, and I was unable to post here.

If I had been able to post here, I wanted to post a reminder of the obvious Gift Horse Buying Opportunity with the Dow drop. Although I was unable to do so, I hoped that the numerous times previously that I had posted the same thing for those who had read the other thread.
Now I am proven wrong, and my posting the same thing repeatedly in the past did not sink in.

Can you tell us why you wanted to sell at the lowest price? Your input could help others understand in the future.
It sounds like you liquidated your stocks, not just switching to a different stock. Did you keep the money within the Tax-Deferred/protected environment, or pay the penalties?

'Hunger Like They've Never Seen It Before': US Food Banks Struggle as 1 in 6 Families With Children Don't Have Enough to Eat
"We're now seeing families who had an emergency fund but it's gone and they're at the end of their rope," said one Texas food bank director.
https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/11/27/hunger-theyve-never-seen-
it-us-food-banks-struggle-1-6-families-children-dont-have

According to Feeding America, the largest hunger relief organization in the U.S., more than 50 million people will experience food insecurity by the end of the year. Among U.S. children, the figure rises to one in four. The group, which runs a network of some 200 food banks across the nation, says it distributed over half a billion meals last month alone, a 52% increase from an average pre-pandemic month.

The latest U.S. Census Bureau pandemic survey, published earlier this month, found that fewer than half of U.S. households with children were "very confident" they could afford to provide enough food for their families in the next month.
