Federal election about to be called in Canada. Over the next couple of weeks the Liberal party of Canada will let Parliament know. Then we have six delightful weeks of election campaigning.

Only six weeks of campaigning, not 18 months? How do you get so lucky?

what do you think of Trudeau's chances? At one point I recall he was tainted by a scandal involving his interior minister (IIRC) but recent economic indicators show a trend up (altho real esate prices are falling?) Any predictions?

Yup, only six weeks. That is the way our laws are set up.

The writ will be dropped and then all of Canada goes to the polls in October.

He was heavily involved with a scandal involving a company from Quebec but things on that front seem to have died down.

The Federal New Democrats have in the last week had several defections to the Green Party.

One political commentator seems to think that this will aid the Liberals.

Myself, I think it will be 4 more years of Liberal governance. I don't think we'll be seeing as many Liberal MPs being sent from BC this time around. I am saying more NDP from my province.

Not sure who will be the Loyal Opposition though. That could come down to a lot of things. The NDP are doing bad in the east.

Any idea why the NDP is doing so badly in the east? My Canadian friend hates the NDP, but then he hates all of the established parties!

Not really. Maybe the leadership isn't showing enough interest in Atlantic Canada and that is why they are having a hard time finding candidates to run especially in New Brunswick. Those provinces are small and often feel over looked by Ottawa. There is also talk of problems in Quebec but Quebec has always been more Liberal in my opinion.

Now given that the NDP was really formed in Saskatchewan, they do tend to focus more on the West. They pick up a few seats in Conservative Alberta, and outside of the last Federal election in 2015, BC is usually a landslide in favour of the NDP.

Bout the only thing I know for certain is that I will not be voting Conservative.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Hey Brenda

First of all I hold Pierre Trudeau in the highest esteem. He accomplished a significant transformation of Canada with many of the excellences Canada is renowned for today (plus of course ' bringing the constitution home').

My impression of Justin is that he doesn't have the smarts, the drive, or the vision of his daddy - and that he's riding on the 'Trudeau' coattails. But maybe that's just me.

He seems like he's an 'internationalist' - favoring sending troops to places Canada has no business (imo) sending troops to, in favor of large international corporations, and personally kind of corrupt.

OTOH, he's not as epically corrupt as the Clintons.

Am I being too harsh? Too politically biased by events here? Too remote from the details and 'yes, but' equivocations of both the good and the bad? I hope you can help me out.

Hi Kiki,

I too and I think many Canadians still hold Pierre Elliot Trudeau in high esteem. Besides the Constitution, the elder Trudeau also gave us our 2 language system.

In the last year, I have wondered about his drive. Though his name was what got him into politics in the first place I would imagine.

Looking at a government website for military operations doesn't show us doing much. Though of course the government isn't going to tell us everything. And we've had peacekeepers in places for years.

I don't think you are being too harsh. I will admit that I look at Federal politics in Canada now with an really watchful eye. Hoping I don't see any of what is happening down there creeping north of the border.

Buying a pipeline, I don't think was one of his better moves and wanting to put more of it through BC and through native lands.

Flip-side wanting to create a day to remember the Native children who died and the survivors of the Residential school system is a good thing.
