It's hard to say why something like that might happen. It's easy to blame YouTube because they have been doing shady stuff behind the scenes for years and they get away with it because everything in the TOS and the way they operate is purposefully nebulous.

At the same time though, I could see the benefit for Soph to constantly bounce around this number without hitting 1 million. Hell, she wasn't even on my radar until around a month or so before you made this thread and at that time she had already had 970,000+ subscribers.

T-Series vs. Pewdiepie went on what seemed like forever until T-Series finally pulled ahead as the most subbed channel.

It's been theorized that T-Series had a ton of fake throwaway accounts set up with bots and as they got new legitimate subscribers they were deleting sham accounts at the same rate to keep their count under pewdiepies for as long as they could without it being blatantly obvious something was up. This was good for T-Series. It kept their name in a lot of online articles for an entire year, whereas if they had just flown right past pewdiepie they would have been a big story for a few weeks and it would have been over. (The end resulting sub count being the same, but if they did indeed have a lot of fake accounts, this kept them in the spotlight long enough to get legitimate accounts subbed).

Soph might be doing this too.

Once you hit 970+ subscribers, there is little YouTube can do to keep you from expanding short of deleting your account. 1 Million is a fairly exclusive club. Her videos must be getting shared on other places like Twitter and Facebook constantly even if youtube is doing a hard shadowban on her stuff.

I've heard a lot of complaints from people I watch on youtube saying that the algorithm is blocking their content from viewers. While I agree that this is probably the case when you do searches on youtube, I think they're wrong when it comes to other aspects of the site. I regularly get these people's new videos in my "recommended" feed, even though they say that they never show up in recommended feeds.

Granted, I'm not subscribed to 1,000 different accounts. If you are, then this might be more likely to happen. But as an example, the video you posted (her new one) was in my recommended feed last night.

One thing I will say though, is sometimes I forget some of the people I'm subscribed to because they never show up in my recommended feed. But... if I go into my subscriptions and watch even one of their videos I will start getting their stuff in my recommended feed for a week or two before they disappear again if I never click on one of their videos.

I find the recommended video thing to be fairly annoying and in need of a tune up. I used to be able to refresh the page and get a whole new group of videos every time. Now I refresh and 80% of the recommended videos are the same ones that were there before the refresh. I don't necessarily think that YouTube is going out of its way to censor through not putting stuff out there. I just think their recommended feed is in dire need of maintenance.
