George Washington wuz a wize man. Hiz final address containz a warning agenst political factionz that iz amazingly presise on wuts going on rite now with the republicanz and Trump:

Quote:

political parties must be restrained in a popularly elected government because of their tendency to distract the government from their duties, create unfounded jealousies among groups and regions, raise false alarms among the people, promote riots and insurrection, and provide foreign nations and interests access to the government where they can impose their will upon the country.

That includes the press for those of you who believe it's all lies as Trump wants you to. The wonderful thing is that our justice system is working as well.

No doubt. I just find it funny that you don't see how the neo-libs in the Democratic Party today have been doing this for the last decade.

You're not going to solve anything when you're always looking to blame the other side and not monitoring your own side, J0.

I'm happy you registered as Independent, so at least you're starting your journey to becoming woke. Maybe when you start working outside of that box you can see the deceit on both sides of the corrupt coin.

If you only vote in November, you are 8 months too late. You completely missed the only real opportunity to force politicians to understand your preferred direction for politics.

The direction of all American political parties is set during the Primary vote, where the candidates are chosen. When November comes around, you are only choosing between either a "D" or an "R". The important choice made in March 2018 is what kind of "D", from all the different "D"s available, and what kind of "R".

If your choice is a third party, a "G" for Green, you might just as well stay home because they never win the General Election. The state Legislatures and Congress are not parliaments, and there is no room, except in theory, for third parties in America's state and federal constitutions. George Washington was thinking there would be no political parties, just the best man winning each election, out of dozens, hundreds, thousands of simultaneous electoral contests. George sure got that wrong.

Too many Americans want to call themselves "Independents", thinking "outside the box" or whatever their preferred delusions about themselves. They will not choose a party, so they can't vote in the Primary election, so they end up with absolutely no choice about who is running for office in November. Then it all comes down to either "D" or "R", between Bad or Worse. A real estate analogy might make it clearer. Instead of "D" or "R", you a choosing between an apartment or a house, but the evil twist is that the real estate agent picks the address of your house or apartment, not you. About 41% of Americans are renters. You won't like that, would you? But that is what happens when you don't vote in the Primary. Somebody else picks the address where you live. But at least you still get to decide whether to rent or own, except that isn't the most important choice you need to make if you want to be happy about America.

Unless your house is paid for, you do not own it. That is one of the biggest lies in America. And even if you do own it, you're still renting it from the Government if you live in a dying state with ludicrous property taxes like Illinois.

I chose where I live. I had a lot of choices available to me. I wanted to be close to family, low property taxes, plenty of space and to pay for the house with cash. The only choice I really didn't have in the matter was forcing somebody out of their house who wasn't selling.

I don't understand your Real Estate analogy.

You're right about the Primaries, but you're wrong about independent thinking. You're a neo-liberal sycophant all the way. You wouldn't understand it anymore than the neo-cons would.

You didn't even ask who the Renters are in my Real Estate analogy. They are the Democrats, mostly the ones with the least savings and least able to get a mortgage in the real world, not just in an analogy. You didn't ask why the Owners (the Republicans) don't get any choice of what address they live in. When enough of them give their vote to a Republican, they will definitely end up with the GOP's agenda (living at the GOP's address) not the voters' preference. Remember when Candidate Trump was promising better healthcare for everyone, better than the Democrats' crappy Obamacare? That was an excellent promise, but it didn't last long. Once elected, President Trump slavishly followed the GOP's program to kill Obamacare and replace it with nothing at all. That didn't happen only because two GOP Senators were not following the GOP, one of them with a brain tumor. If McCain had been feeling healthy, he would have voted to kill Obamacare. And the Democrats, every last one of them, voted in the opposite direction.

With the way the Federal and state constitutions are written, every decision comes down to only choice A or only B or failure. Failure seems to be far easier with our constitutions than coming to a choice that blends the best of A and B together.

Take notes 6ix. It is Republicans: Minnesota Republicans Want to Ban a Voting System That Gives Third-Party Candidates a Leg Up.
https://theintercept.com/2018/03/19/ranked-choice-voting-minnesota-rep
ublicans
/

Lawmakers in Minnesota introduced legislation last week that would prohibit local governments from adopting ranked-choice voting, a system that can help third-party candidates’ chances for election and lead to a more representative government.

The bill, introduced on March 12, would have the greatest impact in Minneapolis, which has used ranked-choice voting for municipal elections since 2013. The city has since then elected a Green Party city council member, and it currently has a nearly equal number of men and women on city council and the most ethnically diverse set of lawmakers in its history. Just last year, a well-funded socialist was a viable candidate in a city council election. St. Paul adopted the voting method last year, and a number of other cities are currently considering it.

Unlike traditional first-past-the-post voting systems — in which the candidate with the biggest number of votes wins — under ranked-choice voting, voters rank candidates on their ballot instead of voting for just one. If no one gets a majority of votes in the first round, next-preference votes are counted until a candidate gets most of the votes.

This system eliminates the so-called spoiler effect, helps third-party candidates achieve viability, and ensures that no one can be elected without the support of the majority of voters.

George Washington never imagined the problems caused by a first-past-the-post voting system.

How Third Parties Are Kept Out Of Presidential Debates

Quote:

[The] political “Khyber Pass” used to be controlled by the nonpartisan League of Women Voters, which gave serious consideration to third party candidates. But this angered Democrats and Republicans, who then teamed up to wrest control of the debates away from the League.

The two parties accomplished this by creating the official sounding Commission on Presidential Debates in 1987. Within a year, this private nonprofit corporation had pushed the League aside and taken control of the debates.

Sure, the game is rigged, but it was done by George Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Monroe when they wrote the Constitution. There is a list of 3rd Party Presidential Candidates going all the way back to before TV and radio. They all have this in common: they lost. The electoral college was set up in the Constitution to insure that they shall be losers. Nobody wins who is not running for the two major parties. This is how it has always been at the Federal level of America.
www.presidentsusa.net/thirdparty.html

The first 5 Presidents also wrote the Constitution. In their writing, they knew how to lock in power for themselves. And the 6th President? President John Quincy Adams was the son of the 2nd President, John Adams, keeping control of America within a small group of rich people. This is how things have always worked in America where there has been no room for 3rd Party candidates.

I don't see how the electoral college has much to do with 3rd parties being excluded.

We'll talk about the electoral college when we have campaign finance reform first, and allow 3rd parties access to the presidential debates second.

1KIKI

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I still believe the reason why we have such a binary dynamic is because we don't have a parliamentary system. In a parliamentary system you can be voted out at any time, which makes it far more important to retain majority support at all times - or, if you don't have a majority, coalition support. That makes minority parties that much more valuable even if they never have a majority. They are a swing vote. Being more valuable makes them more viable.

The way it is now, if you don't vote for one or the other, you're effectively without representation.

As for the ORIGINAL system of voting set up in the Constitution, it wasn't anywhere as close to being representative or equal as it is today. Not saying it's great today, but it used to be worse. The people who wrote the Constitution really didn't want to give the average person any power.

So anyway ... anyone up for a rational, fact-based, and civil discussion about the topic?
