Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death, there is no appeal and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.

You're right DEVERSE, but there is one thing that changes stupidity; death. And the death of this town is in the cards because the future belongs to the innovative. It always has.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Umm... I think their reasons are a little wobbly, but I understand not wanting a big solar farm right next door. They apparently like their bucolic existence (except, of course, for the lack of jobs) and perhaps they see their beautiful residential/agricultural zoning as the last attractive feature of their little hometown, and don't want it ruined by a large area (right next door to SOME people, for sure!) re-zoned into "manufacturing". It's a case of NIMBY. I'd probably feel the same, but because of the way politics works, you can't just say "I don't want it, that's not why I bought my property" you have to juice it up with health and safety reasons.

"I'd probably feel the same, but because of the way politics works, you can't just say "I don't want it, that's not why I bought my property" you have to juice it up with health and safety reasons."

It depends on the town council, and who they listen to. And also, land use plans and zoning.

A lot of people probably live next to nice woods or fields and don't know that the land use plan calls for so much low (or medium or high) density residential, or light industrial/ commercial right on that spot. And so when the bulldozers come in, or a company files for a permit to build a whatnot, it's a shock. But I bought the place because I enjoyed the ambiance provided by land I neither owned nor controlled.

You'd expect that democracy works best locally, where the people who you vote for and who run the place are metaphorically your neighbors.

But unless you have a lot of time, energy and/ or smarts, even knowing just what's going on in your very own town government takes more than most people have. And so at least that part of your life is in the hands of people you have no choice but to trust.

At one point I successfully stymied what I thought would be an ill-fated zoning change in my neighborhood because - somehow, I don't remember exactly - I found out there was going to be a open city council meeting to take testimony on the topic, and - I think - my argument swayed them.

But I've heard other stories, stories where the permitting people could be moved by bundles of cash, and stories where business interests ran the town to suit their businesses.

So the whole process has a LOT of elasticity built in. It depends on the land use plans and zoning of record; and then it depends on the people who run the city.

That said, I do kind of wonder - how far would those arguments in the news story go, exactly, in this specific instance? I can't imagine them withstanding even the most casual challenge from a business interest. So, if you're trying to put up roadblocks, wouldn't it behoove you to put up BETTER roadblocks? Though it isn't easy, the city can redo its land use plans and zoning to disallow the project. Or it can require mitigating conditions - so far from roads or homes; trees to keep the project out of sightlines etc. If the city is amenable to considering the arguments given, I can't imagine they'd balk at something more reasonable.

And finally, I'm sure you've heard the story about how the schools in Augusta, Virginia were shut down because of a calligraphy project - which was to attempt to freehand reproduce some ornate Islamic script. Not to understand it in translation, or believe it, but simply to copy its form, as one might try to copy any work of art. 'All schools shut down in Augusta County, Virginia, over Islam homework' http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/18/us/virginia-school-shut-islam-homework/ The homework assignment read - "Here is the shahada, the Islamic statement of faith, written in Arabic. In the space below, try copying it by hand. This should give you an idea of the artistic complexity of calligraphy." Some of their parents saw the homework as an attempt to convert their children to Islam. The county school system reacted. It removed the shahada from world religion instruction. "A different, non-religious sample of Arabic calligraphy will be used in the future," it said. And it issued a statement saying no one was trying to convert anyone to any religion. But that hasn't been enough for Kimberly Herndon, who kept her ninth-grade son home from school. "There was no trying about it. The sheet she gave out was pure doctrine in its origin," she told WHSV. By Tuesday, like-minded parents and residents of the town of nearly 24,000 gathered in the sanctuary of Good Will Ministries to voice their grievances, including against the teacher.

With examples like that, it's not hard to believe some people would be so stupid they'd think a solar project would suck up the light from the sun, and not leave enough for anything else in the area.

Yanno, I can understand people just not liking a change in their neighborhood. But the arguments they're making will not only be ineffectual, they're abysmally stupid. And 'stupid' is the heart of the story.

SAGAN: We are releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide, increasing the greenhouse effect. It may not take much to destabilize the Earth's climate, to convert this heaven, our only home in the cosmos, into a kind of hell.

The linked article leaves out a lot, I'm guessing. And of all the concerns, only two are actual quotes...

"All the young people are going to move out,"

“I want information,...Enough is enough."

I'm skeptical the real reasons were as suggested, that a bunch of hayseeds in N.Carolina were fearful of cancer from these farms, as well as ' it'll suck up the energy from the sun ', as if that were a bad thing.

Costs, property values, etc ... play more into the decision.

And don't forget, Ted Kennedy was all for wind power, until someone tried to put it in his back yard, off the coast of Massachusetts.

Consider this is an area of the USA that leads in porn searches, high school dropouts, divorce, teen pregnancy, poverty, HIV, STD's, diabetes, and child abuse deaths in a nation that many believe that Kennedy was killed by the CIA/Mafia, vaccinations cause autism, jet fuel can’t melt steel, and global warming is an Illuminati program supported by the lizard aliens who have infiltrated governments worldwide to build FEMA death camps in order to kill off the earth’s population to less than a billion during a false flag event sponsored by the UN during Jade Helm so the 1% can rule the world after Donald Trump becomes President and bombs Agrabah.

Obviously there isn’t anyone who is sufficiently stupid to believe solar panels cause cancer and eat up the sun, because that would be ridiculous.

Because it's important and because you mention it in this post, I want to post, that recent research claims to show that some Autism may be attributable to women taking antidepressants during pregnancy.

I sort of wonder at such studies and their accuracy. Not to get into some discussion as I have no clear idea of which one to believe.

The study I saw by Li-Ching Lee, a research scientist with the department of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; he and his co-authors didn't actually say there was a clear link between antidepressants (SSRIs) and autism, but there was perhaps an association. As one of the peer reviewers stated, "It's very hard to do a definitive study of this. The confounders here are huge. They [the study authors] initially found no difference between the groups -- it was only when they looked specifically at gender-adjusted differences that they saw an association. We still don't know whether SSRIs are associated with more autism. We need to look further."

Dr. Roy Perlis with the department of psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in his study found no increased risk for autism by mothers who used an antidepressant, but did suggest there is a heightened risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) where severe maternal depression is present. In his study he identified the risk factor raising the risk of autism was the mother's depression, not an antidepressant taken during pregnancy.

Hard to say who is right or wrong and its risky to choose as well. Li only looked at Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft; and I have no idea if there are other drugs a mother could take. Is it better to not take drugs or to take some?

It is why I said ( may be attributable ). I guess it's just wishful thinking on my part that they finally get to the bottom of this. Every day too many children are born with this terrible affliction.

You interject false and derogatory " facts " in w/ your diatribe, it calls into question what else you'd lie about to trash those in N. Carolina. Or anyone else, who you deem as hayseeds or yokels who question what ever cherished agenda you hold.

You got caught in a lie. What's truly sad here is how you're now trying to spin out of being accountable.

"Some people just don't want to learn - we see that every day on this board."

I would think it's most in evidence when you find people stuck on a thought who seem unable to evaluate that thought against solid facts (or even to cite any solid facts at all) - and thus, who are unable to learn new thoughts.

Don't you agree?

At this point, I think that there are enough different types and different causes of autism that, like cancer, everything can cause it, and it has also existed before "everything" as well.
