The Man They Call Soul...

People use the phrase "quiet as a tomb" to describe absolute stillness. The barren space of the former treehouse, airship, and now starship SereniTREE isn't quite that still, but it is close. There are the usual clicks and hisses of various components working, beeps and whirs echoed from various workstations and powered down screens, and faint music plays from underneath the pool table in the middle of the common room. More than that though is the feeling in the air, the faint energy that tells you that while the space may be empty, it is not void. Stories and memories swirl around, echoing through the halls and rooms, regaling the shadows with epic tales of bygone eras.

Then, another sound rings out, shattering the silence and making the dust fall off of the glass root beer bottles behind the bar. At first it is just a banging, slow and regular; but before long it transforms into a scraping and clanging cacophony. Behind that, a voice can be heard, low at first, but it quickly gains volume until a series of curses can be clearly heard. Finally, with a long groan of metal, the door to one of the shuttle pods creaks open just far enough for a figure to stumble through.

"Gorram door, gorram crappy design, gorram floor, ah my ruttin' head..."

Rubbing his left temple with one hand and scratching the stubble on his chin with the other, Soul, Security Chief of the SereniTREE, glances around the empty room.

"Okay, I know I wasn't in there for THAT long. Then again, there was no label on that bottle that Mai found...so where the hell is everyone?"

OOC: I have no idea if this will gain traction or if any of the old crew will even see this. I was just feeling a bit nostalgic today. If anyone new wants to join, feel free! We are on a ship that changes as we need it, cruising through the 'verse to see what wackiness will find us!

The Man They Call Soul...

Soul sits on one of the stools at the bar, nursing a root beer. He glances around as memories flood him from every direction. Smiling softly, he chuckles to himself.

"A wise man once said, 'I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you actually left them.' We knew, though. We knew we were in the good old days while we were living them, and we truly LIVED those days."

He pauses for a moment, almost as if waiting for a reply he knows won't come. Then he raises a bottle in the air.

"Here's to old friends and family, to epic adventures and days of relaxation, to drama and comedy, and to stories that will echo on long after we are gone. Here's to the clubhouse, the treehouse, the flying treehouse and the spaceship that carried us across the universe. Here's to the creation that inspired all of us. Here's to the SereniTREE."

He taps the bottle on the counter and downs the root beer in one gulp, letting out a burp that echoes around the room. He laughs again. It's a good laugh.

A noise startles her awake. "Gotta be more old ship noises. It's been too long for anyone to be around and I'm sure I'm alone here." She closes her eyes to go back to sleep, but the sound of glass breaking sets her senses on alert and she sits up abruptly from her bunk. "Gorram it! Looks like I have to go find out what's going on..."

As Jake7 cautiously makes her way through the ship, she hears a loud belch and heads to where the sound echoed from.

She enters the bar and, shocked at the sight before her, she tentatively whispers in confusion: "Soul??? Is that really you?"

The Man They Call Soul...

There is a shimmer in the air as time seems to move quickly, much faster than it should. In a flash, 4 years have passed by, and the loud burp that Soul had let out somehow still hangs in the air. He chuckles to himself, and then turns to see who had just called his name.

"Jake7!!! How in the good gorram???"

Soul jumps down from the bar stool and wraps Jake7 up in a big hug.

"I heard some rumors that we might be flying again, and I was so hoping some old friends would come out of the woodwork, and here you are!!!"

Soul! It's great to see you again! I think I was dropped into some sort of suspended animation. Woke up on the ship and thought I was alone!

Who we are depends on the outcome of the struggle between who we were and who we want to be

In a dimly lit empty hallway on the Sereni-Tree, long forgotten over the years, a gentle hum sounds from seeming nothingness.
Then the air around the spot shimmers and the hum becomes a crackle. And then silence.
Only, where there was nothing, now there was something. There was some one.

A figure. A man, dressed in trousers, a t-shirt and a long brown coat.

Despite the dim light, he knew where he was. He just didn't know when he was.

He sighed loudly and cursed in Chinese.

Making his way down the corridor, he found one of the access machines and tapped the screen.
A woman's voice crackled. "Welcome to your Tevlon History Recorder and Easy Access Drive. Tap the screen to update your system"
The man tapped the button to download the update. Nothing happened. He tapped it again. The screen flickered.

"Damn systems. Does anything work?"

The T.H.R.E.A.D machine ought to have provided some information but it seemed pointless, until he noted the date and time at the top of the screen.
That couldn't be right.

"TRM, you son of a..." he muttered to himself

Twenty one years. Twenty one years had passed in a matter of minutes.

Less than an hour ago he was waiting for the departure of Destiny's Shadow. Then the good doctor had appeared. And now...

The machine flickered and then seemingly shut down.

"Fantastic," he groaned. Then, a sound echoed down the corridor.

Was that a voice? Or something else?

Maybe he wasn't alone on this ship after all.
He didn't know if that was a good thing or not.

But he'd been trained for this. And, if recent events had taught him anything, it's that his body could handle anything.

"Okay, fine" he said to himself. "Let's do this. One last time..."

And with that, Needy headed into the bowels of the ship.
